  • you can ask for time. it can be granted when the play is dead. the ump makes the ball live or dead.

  • In Illinois, all of the way through high school, the batter is only allowed one foot out of the box between pitches. If he continues to delay the game and walk on the ump a strike may be issued

  • i would of got set then called time to make him mad

  • @HcKPUREKiLLER You might try to make an experienced umpire mad, but when he retaliates by calling a pit high strike on you, who's going to be angrier? It's not uncommon to sit a problem down if he doesn't want to play the game

  • what is that bullshit? @noosethenyif1 where the hell do they get these umps? they are completely oblivious to the game the batter can take all day if he wants

  • player needs time to get the sign from 3rd base

  • "Time is part of the game." That is true, but here's the deal. When a player or coach wants "time" they are requesting time, or asking for time. The umpire has every right to not give it.

  • "Time is part of the game"... only at Yankee/Red Sox games. 4 hrs MINIMUM!

  • @ahtartersauce101 I couldn't agree more. If the Yanks were playing the Red Sox, the ump might want to call time so he could have a beer with the fellas in the dugout.

  • "Hey Blue, time?"

  • Jeez ump, could you at least get time after the foul ball?

  • He looks like eggman from sonic

  • i love meatball parm

  • @fiedler12345: Good point. Nothing like a meatball parm on a summer evening especially while enjoying umpires explaining the rules of the game.

  • LOL you guys are idiots, HE HAS TO ASK FOR TIME, he cant just say time.

  • this is the type of umpire that looks for a peoblem just do your job if he wants to get ready let him get ready your getting paid to umpire. do your job please

  • also once the batter appears to be getting ready, and once the pitcher starts his motion the batter will get ready so not to be caught off guard.

  • Right, but we teach that, in order to prevent the occurrence of a quick pitch situation, whether the Ump is paying attention or not, the batter should hold a hand up while setting up in the box. He/She doesn't necessarily need to verbally request time, but some umps will allow a quick pitch if the batter is in the box, whether or not they are ready to hit.

  • @gabonayez you can teach does not mean tis going to get granted. a quick pitch is an illegal pitch to catch the batter off gaurd.

  • @critter2 right. as an amateur umpire, i understand that time may not be granted at every request. That being said, this batter went about it the wrong way. A hand up is one thing, but to turn to the umpire and verbally request time is a waste of time and unnecessary.

  • @gabonayez he has a right to ask a question to umpire. the question seem to be about the hands though. and the umpire calls time to explain it to the coach. which is wasting time.

  • he can call time if he wants to like the other poster said the umpire does not have to grant it.

  • Fan can be heard saying, "He can call time if he wants to." Nope. He can request time, but only the umpire can grant it, and this ump is right not to do so. Most umpires just ignore the raised hand; the pitcher can't pitch until the batter is ready anyhow.

I usually just tell the batter there's no need to raise his hand or request time; I'll make sure the pitcher doesn't start his delivery until the batter is ready.

  • @bigyaz You dont need to wait until the batter is ready. If he is stepping in the box and swinging the bat around you cant throw it and it can be a ball or strike. But if the ump is on time you cant throw it.

  • @Mrfreshkid120 No idea what you're saying here....

  • @bigyaz Like if he is in the box the pitcher can throw at anytime!

  • @Mrfreshkid120 No, that is absolutely not true. See rule 805e: "Umpires will judge a quick pitch as one delivered before the batter is reasonably set in the batter's box."

It's extremely dangerous to have a pitch coming in when the batter is not looking. No good umpire will let that happen.

  • @bigyaz Its funny how you know fake rules lol

  • @Mrfreshkid120 Yeah, I hate it when people cite actual rules from the Official Baseball Rules instead of, you know, making shit up like you do.

  • @bigyaz ohhhhh scaryyy comebacckkkk i hope it doesnt eat me alive!

  • @Mrfreshkid120 its an actual rule you dipshit. you can request time all you want, the umpire doesn't have to give it to you. and the pitcher can't throw a pitch until the umpire gives the signal to play, or gets into the universal squat position that umpires are known for. watch and learn the game of baseball before coming on here you troll.

  • @lehighballa1 onastly if i was that stupid!...i know you have to ask the umb but if the ump is ready but the batter is in the batters box you can throw whenever you want!

  • at my town team the ump called time but the pitcher thew the ball pitcher sad he did not know

  • @bigyaz

I do it out of habit every time I get into the box, just to make sure the pitcher doesn't pull a fast one, but I never do it while I have one foot out, wth is the point? I like this Umpire. Keep the game rolling, what does he have a ritual after every pitch? Move along.
