If I had wanted to hear Freddie Mercury screaming like a girl, that's what I would have typed in the search field. What part of NO MUSIC don't you people understand? When I watch a beautiful airliner landing, I can very well point out if it's dramatic or not myself, no need to had unnecessary loud and cheezy dramatic music. Also, I'm not sure I buy the fact that a 5,617ft runway is too short for a 747SP... anyone know? Sorry for the bashing, it had the potentiel for being a great vid.
The caption stating "Reverse thrust. Check Dust" is inaccurate. Landing distance calculations were made without the aid of reverse thrust to prevent potential foreign object ingestion as the narrow field provided for runway overhang on all four engines; clearly seen in the video. This was done to preserve engine integrity as all four were removed for future use in service aircraft.
I am sitting here ,crying and Applauding together......when I lived in the UK,I would get up early morning to watch this on its final descent into Heathrow(many years ago now)...THANK YOU!!!!
If I am not mistaken, it is Mr Scully Levin piloting this bird into Rand Airport, he is a regular airshow display pilot at Aouth African airshows and also captain's the 747 and A340 for SAA
no dude, there are actually two 747's at rand airport, one is the 747SP called maluti from this video and the other one is a 747-200 called lebombo which was used for those fantastic low level passes at the rugby word cup a few years ago. they are both now part of the SAA museum at rand airport.
Well, I actually did my own research and found the data for Hantam, Maluti and Lebombo. The one I definitely had problems with was chopped up in JHB in 2008 I believe. That was Hantam..
Do you know what type of airplane I think it was Soutpanberg or something like that was? I just remember the name.
I am semi South African, so the 747 brings back memories from my young days flying up and down from Europe. :-)
@bartoepwa It may or may not be a good choice, that's not the point. Aircraft videos, in my opinion, are no place to put music in the background. There's a time and place for each.
I like strawberry shortcake, and I like pickles, but not at the same time.
2 comments below, i was the pilot landing this 747sp, for the last time,im always the pilot of any plane on you tube when ive had 10 cans of stella artois,
Believe it or not, this aircraft could make a fine bush workhorse in the hands of capable flight/ ground crews. Damn narrow runway in this vid, but 5000' class runway for a midweight 747 is doable. Just horse the throttles 100%, brakes locked with mains sitting close to threshold stripes. Dump flaps to 20 or greater after passing 100 kts & VR a little less than normal. Why can't engines 2 & 3 have mounted intake pneumatic FOD blasters like on the B-727-200?
i've been past the rand airport and would never have guessed that anything bigger than a private jet could land there!!! this is incredible and the pilot deserves alot of respect.
I'd have rated it higher but the music was really crappy. No need for the music - let the sounds of the aircraft be the "music." (Even turning the volume control on the video all the way down I could still here the stupid music.)
Yuk music. Awesome clip.

Very sad. I love the old clock and dial airplanes. Also, I as well do not like music added to YT videos.

It was really amazing. However, I can not understand why this kind of video is uploaded with such a scam music. NO MUSIC please, next time.

By the way, I dont know about Maluti, but if the runway can be made to (or is) 6300 feet and the plane emptied, this baby COULD TAKE OFF again.

Can you upload this gem without the Queen soundtrack PLEASE?
Thanks for filing and uploading this rare footage that is truly remarkable.

The Rand Airport is in Germiston, South Africa not Johannesburg....check Google Earth.

The name of the specific plane is now LEBOMBO.
What was Lebombo before? I might have gone up and down from London with stops using this plane...
I cannot remember whether it was with this plane the engine caught fire landing in CPT.
