  • I have one of those guitars and the pups sound immense. Wesleys are no different to any other guitar, every one is different, some sound like shit, some cracking examples can be found.

  • Man I love that middle sound you got with both pick ups at once.

  • I love these pickups and am kind of in the market for a set at the moment but im looking for strat replacement pickups and was wondering if you knew of any single coil sized p 90 ish models?

  • @UpThroughTheRain - Hi I haven't found any replacement pups that fit that bill. The MFD pickups on G&L guitars can sound P90-ish to my ears anyway, but they don't sell them separately. There is a thread on the Seymour Duncan discussion pages that might be useful ( I can't post link here)

  • @UpThroughTheRain vintage vibe guitars sell a strat size single coil p90.

  • if i was gonna get another guitar it would be this one.

  • that extra fuc... ermmm fatness....

  • Those pickups are not wired stock - that middle position has a lot of quack to it. I happen to like my P90s like that, but it ain't what a stock middle position sounds like.

  • @vibroluxor Yeah you may be right. I remember trying different variations and I just liked that sound so I stuck with it.

  • Thanks for the demo and the humour - very informative and funny. And you have the best band name ever :-)

  • @2smallbowls - Thanks. I'm also playing in another band with a much more sensible name; Alien Stash Tin

  • cool guitar dad.

  • some Gallagher! yeah good to hear

    Sounds great by the way

  • @aaroniusfalonius - Thanks! Haven't played that song for a while, must dust it off and do it again soon.

  • thank so much..!

  • thank so much..!

  • hey, nice guitar, do you thing a p-90 is a good pick up for a les paul? mine is one of those cheaper japan 70's copies..with semi hollow body, is a lespaul, but its not solid... i play hard rock and i have a jazzmaster i love the tone of it but i want the bite, and fat of a les paul, its the p-90 enouhg fat..? i use lot of gain i don't care about the noise of a single coil..

  • @thewretchedrod

I personally prefer the P90 with Les Pauls and SGs - so did people like Leslie West, (early) Carlos Santana, Pete Townshend, Zal Cleminson etc. If you want really FAT sounds then the humbucker is probably more for you - if you want a bit more bite and snarl then the P90 is better. I'd recommend listening to the people I mentioned above on YouTube and comparing with guys who use humbuckers.

  • what is the difference between all the pickups in the guitar like p90 single humbuck etc

  • did u buy guitar new cos i ve just seen 1 on ebay no300365142916?

well done youve got a really good guitar 4 under 150 quid. how do you get over the fret problem tho?

    thx for posting

ps i ll definately be contacting catswhisker; great sound!

  • Hi thanks for the comment. I did buy this guitar new on ebay from Wesley. The frets were not so bad on this guitar as on the other 2 I got from Wesley. I play with a reasonably high action and don't record with this guitar so the few minor buzzes don't really bother me. When I get round to it I'll check out the fret levels but I'm busy playing and building other guitars at the moment!

Catswhisker are great - they do good humbucker sized P90s which are great replacements for Les Paul, SG etc.

  • you ve got yourself a hell of a good guitar for about 150 quid then well done! how d fix the fret problem and just wonderin if i could put these on my les paul copy, without too much work? thx 4 posting

  • nice video, but hire a new camera man or get a tripod :P

  • Thanks for the great video!!

  • I just checked my old emails. When I bought them (as a pair), Allan only did one sort of P90 - it looks like the P90T because of the screw poles. He does them in bridge and neck - if you check out his specifications page you see the different resistances and polarities. I'd recommend you contact Allan - he is a very helpful guy and gave me loads of advice before buying some humbuckers for my Flying V. Hope this helps.

  • Hi - I'm pretty sure that these are the P90T pickups.

  • Did i hear a reference to 'Laundromat' by Rory Gallagher?

  • Yes you did! My band, the Poodles of Doom, played this at the time though we haven't for a while. Great song - one of my fave Rory Gallagher numbers.

  • Well I didn't really mind the BS so much.. In fact it was good to hear your thoughts.

  • It would be nice to hear you play this guitar with a bit less overdive. You admitted it wasn't that clean. A lot of BS, but it sounds nice anyway. Thanks.

  • Yes, fair comment. I really need to do another video playing this through my Hiwatt. It would be easier to start clean and increase the overdrive gradually. I'll also make an effort to reduce the BS (and eliminate background noise). Thanks for the comment anyway.

  • What do you think of that?...I'm sleeping down at the laundrymat...If you should be passin' by...be sure to stop right in...I don't have any clothes to clean...to put inside the machine...but it's the CRAZIEST place you've ever seen

  • "BS, BS, BS" god that cracks me up!

  • actually, alder wood is the classic fender wood but the freeport's bridge and pickups are classic gibson.I like it.

  • are these good at getting that classic 'fender tone'?? cus my guitar cant fit actual single coils

  • Hi - I don't think these (or any other P90s that I've tried) really give classic fender tone. In a way they are somewhere between single coil and humbuckers but have a unique "snarl" all to themselves. There may be other options - why can't you fit single coils?

  • ah well i may beable to but i assume not as my guitar has 2 large humbucker fittings, similar to a les paul so the single coils are simply too small to fit, tho maybe there is a way that i simply dont know about?

  • Possibly you could fit a scratchplate - it would cover the holes and single-coils attach to the scratchplate not the guitar. If that's not possible then you can get humbucker-sized P90s - Catswhisker do the Fat Moggy. They'll be closer to a "Fender sound" than humbuckers. That's what I'd do as I really like P90s (have done this to an SG copy). However, another alternative is to get coil-tapped humbuckers which will allow you to switch between humbucking and single-coil settings. Good luck!

  • pssh just put the single coils in and duct tape around them

  • Looking for pickups, found a great local band- hope to catch you at the Fleece on the 3rd! Great pickups too...

  • Thanks for the comment - we're looking forward to the Fleece gig though it's only a short set. Recommend us to your favourite venues - we're looking for gigs!

  • put on a bigsby and you will have a rockability machine

  • well it sounded quite the same ;)

    that's why i mentioned it !

    greetz

  • i think i recognized a song of rory gallagher :p

  • Oh yes indeed! Well spotted! It's a big favourite of the Poodles of Doom. Sounded kind of OK with this guitar and amp, but that riff pounded into a G&L ASAT through a Hiwatt amp is truly a thing of beauty...

  • a very nice tele body you've there~

  • lol even with the lego sound i thought u were talking about the guitar for a split second like is that the sound of lego then? loved it

  • It's the sound of a small boy looking for one bit at the bottom of a VERY big bucket of lego. The little ****.

  • Nice video. I like what you are playing as wel.

  • What'S the BS all the time? Reminds me of Bias, lol =D

  • I'm afraid that, as this was unscripted, I was coming out with a lot of BS! Hopefully the pickups speak for themselves. May do another demo through my Hiwatt rig for comparison.

  • catswhiskers rule!

  • Nice video man, considering buying one of these wesley freeports and doing the same thing, swapping in some nice aftermarket P-90s. Good demo of the pickups and cute kid!

  • awesome!

  • Thanks for posting this Jon. I bought my Freeport last June and paid a quid more than you! I got one Catswhisker P90 soon after and decided to get a matching bridge after hearing your recording. On its way courtesy of Allan. Will be in touch when I come to fit them. Looks like you bought a Stagg 'toaster lead' as well. When a guitar weighs 8lbs you want it to sound good - can't wait to have it whiskered up.
