Expressing also my gratitude for the opportunity to hear the world's great music at my computer, when I can't afford to travel to the music halls of the world and TV doesn't do much either. I heard this ballade many times as a young man thanks to 'record clubs' and the recordings of one Artur Rubenstein. This young woman has a similar touch for Chopin. I read your interests in several pianists past and present. Kudos to them all and those not yet performing for us.
Everything that I missed in great pianists performances I've found here. It's the first time that I listened to an agogic expression that touched me, despite it be a very common work. Thank you from Brazil, Ramão.
I'ts all allright, but were has gone that free spirited musicianship of horowitz and richter and other great musicians? I feel nowdays all that manny young pianists are trying to do is to be likeable, they're all just too f-ing polite -no one really goes to the end! And I don't mean mannerism, good forte or other bullshit -but go to the end with your emotions!
So beautiful... I feel my soul is cleansed with warm silky flow of water scented with myrtle. I also imagine smell of freshly baked wheat bread steaming under the incandescent light over dark cozy background.
Very professional but not on a same level as the much more expressive and refined Nicolay Khozyainov. He is simply more talented than other performers in this completion.
Maybe it's just the poor piano but I don't share everybody's enthusiasm for this interpretation. Chopin's Ballade No. 4 is my favourite piece and I suffer when I hear an average pianist destroying it. Listen please to Ivan Moravec' recording and you'll instantly know the difference.
@cioccolateria You're certainly full of yourself. Average pianist? This woman won the Chopin Competition, one of the most prestigious piano competitions in the world. That's a claim that even many world class pianists can't make. She's no average pianist. She knows what she's doing and has full control over her playing. If you don't like her interpretation that's fine, but don't go knocking her ability and suggesting people listen to another performance. That is beyond low.
@Zodiarkz I don't judge people's achievements according to their diplomas or prizes, but based on what they actually do. So Avdeeva's accolade isn't a proof of her abilities to me. Technically she might be all right - but her interpretation (I hope we agree on what this word means) is scholastic, that's why I suggest listening to a Master (e. g. Ivan Moravec) to those who haven't yet heard his interpretation, so that they could compare. In my opinion that's perfectly fair.
@cioccolateria At a certain level of mastery, you can't judge anymore on 'objective' criteria. You sound like an academic erudite who doesn't fully master one -practical- thing in his life, let say the piano.
@Zodiarkz And besides, Avdeeva's winning of the Chopin Competition was a shock for the most experts, medias and listeners - don't you remember the reactions or didn't you follow the stormy discussions back then? There were two candidates for the winner and instead of both of them the first prize went to Avdeeva. So please don't operate with it.
@Zodiarkz haha, I've just understood your point of view...she's playing in a real live competition...not in a recording studio. So, you're even more naive to think that it's the same delivery.
@cioccolateria I'm just curious and would like to know how you think she "destroys" this piece? Please explain what you mean...would love to hear your thoughts in more detail....
@darkkerrigan Youtube gives me 486 letters to type my answer so I certainly can't analyse one of Chopin's masterpieces here. Just generally: among other things Chopins requires discipline, technical mastery and struggle for an utmost beauty of the sound, and Avdeeva lacks it. Unfortunately there is so much to say and so little space. That's why I recommend another interpretation which I consider, well, maybe not canonic, but definitely congenial. Everyone can compare for himself.
@leopianotuner i agree with your post, her opening was absolutely beautiful, but the rest is...satisfactory at best; her phrasing at times is misdirected, and i find her playing slightly heavy and awkward in certain places
She expresses a clear, consistent, and unique point of view in her playing, and I can see why she won. This is the type of piece where she excels so beautifully, along with the 4th Scherzo, 2nd Sonata, and Fantaisie. The longer, more sophisticated pieces give her a chance to showcase her full range.
I think one reason she gets so much flak is that she's not a flashy "competition" player, but her interpretations are something special.
Amazing how she manges to play it so well knowing all the stress she must have had at that moment, playing one of chopin's most difficult piece at the Chopin's competition...
This is an uninspiring performance, like an amateur would play. This pianist should learn how to phrase a melody and dynamic balancing. Perhaps she should listen to a singer sing. She won the Chopin first prize but unfortunately, she doesn't have a true message of beauty to bring to the table. .
@freeqwerqwer Are you fing serious??? You need to get your fing ears fixed if you think this woman doesn't know how to phrase and sing a melody. She plays the beg. of this beautifully! Can you do any better??
@darkkerrigan , Her only extraordinary moments were in her first 15 seconds of playing, but the rest is passable. The Chopin competition judges did an incredible mistake by bestowing her 1st prize. This pianist deserves a 4th or 5th prize but not 1st. She is not the caliber of a Pollini, Ohlsson, Argerich, Zimmerman or the Polish pianist winner of the last competition.
@leopianotuner I think she plays this perfectly. It's not too fast and it's not too slow. Good pedaling also fits all phrases in neatly. Great touch. I'm sure her hands are nice and soft. If I was to critisize I would say she sould dress sexy like a short skirt.
I am sitting here with tears streaming down my face after hearing this. have never heard such an incredible performance of this piece. totally awestruck. she makes me feel things I didn't know I could feel anymore.
It takes a special sensitivity, a high degree of technical perfection and an advanced artistry to bring out the finer points of this almost unbelievably beautiful music. Yulianna Avdeeva on the strength of this performance has all those qualities. And on another note, we all owe a debt of gratitude to YouTube for allowing us to enjoy these amazing things that we would never otherwise have been able to experience.
@lrmusiclab what do you think about Aschenazy's interpretation? I liked zimerman's one more than any one else, but then i listen to aschenazy and at first i wasn't enthusiastic of that. I kept listening to it and after a week that became THE INTERPETATION, according to me.

@dzeljpiano Don't you think they can choose whatever piano brand they want? The Judges are tired of the loud sounds the S&S produce.

Avdeeva's version of this piece is just as good as eating the freshest oysters and caviar with the best bottle of champagne. I love it!

It's very beautifully played, but would sound more romantic played on a Bosendorfer...
