what great significance does being cared for medically, or being educated, have, if living standards don't matter and everything outside of worship should be avoided? Aside from that, how are those who can no longer work supposed to live without retirement savings?

I don't think John Piper is against retirement. His point is to not waste your retirement for pleasure and unnecessary indulgences. It is good to receive payoff money after many years of hard work. What matters is what you do with the money. Am I going to spend the rest 20 years of my life gambling and cruising, or live adequately and use whatever leftover, the amount that I could have used to pleasure myself, instead give to the poor?

I won't live in this world forever, while heaven is eternal.
