Seeing non Germans returning what we would now call the "Nazi salute" may seem strange to modern eyes after WW2 but the so called "Nazi Salute" was really the old Roman Republican salute or greeting that the Nazis co-opted (along with the swastika). The salute really wasn't a Nazi invention and was even used in America for a short while to salute the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance (look up Bellamy Salute).

@SupernautG What you said is largely true and I want to add another point; when the German contingent passes the reviewing stand, regular, German Army Officers (Wehrmacht) salute Hitler with the REGULAR MILITARY SALUTE, not the Nazi one.

The regular German military all used the traditional military salute until, as you may know, July 21, 1944 when they were forced to change.
