I have a house just like this actually, his house looks like my mom decorated it. haha, My parents only make 100,000 a year combined. That's not rich. By the way, I also live in Texas, just like Ben did, Most homes in Texas are like this. Most middle class homes. 70,000k could get you this house, no debt though.

According to a 2011 report from the Economic Policy Institute, the average net worth of the top - not the whole, just the top - 1% is $14 million (Khimm, S. 2011, Washington Post). Bearing that in mind, while Ben's family may not be members of the elite, it is still highly possible (probable, in fact) that their home is reflective of the 1%.
And it's probably best not to lecture a law student on hard work and brains.

Also, having done a little research on the annual salary of a neurosurgeon in the US, Ben's father is looking at an income of $300,000 to $700,000 p.a. According (again) to the Washington Post article previously mentioned, the average 1% income is $500,000 p.a. Ergo, he is probably a member of the 1%.
