Many years ago, my high school in New York had one of these in the music rooms. Back then they foolishly trusted us to go to class - but often I was instead in the rehearsal rooms with the EML-101 learning about synthesis. Thanks for the cool demo, nice to hear one again !
I need someone to talk to about this synth. I have one and can get some really cool sounds out of it but I don't understand how the patches work well enough to use them properly.
I owned one bought new in 73 for years..they are rugged as hell but not as great as they seem...1. the vcf is only 12db 2. the envelopes are not true adsr they are only AR with a sustain switch a pain..3. no PWM on the vco's and no vco sync either
If it had those features these would have been real minimoog killers
@ephelduath606 Like most professional musical instruments, this synthesizer does not have built-in speakers. However, the ARP 2600 does have built in speakers which do come in handy from time to time. They're not loud enough for performance, though.
@zibbybone We have an EML 400/401 and one of these units (and something else) that haven't been used in years, but look in good nick. The manuals are also there. Do they put out line level signals? In which case I can run them direct to an amp and full range speaker from there?
What is the filter slope on the 101, anyway? It sounds like 12dB/oct. Great craziness there, but I'd like to hear what this thing is capable of as a lead synth.
very different. Both are wonderful at what they do. The mini is much punchier as it has self resonating filters, whereas the 101 does not. It does however have a unique filter that can sweep from low pass to band pass to high pass, and also the oscillators have no stopping points between waveforms. that means that you can create very unique waveforms. T would say that the mini Moog is snappier, whereas the 101 is buzzier. I love my 101 and would not part with it for the world.
Tommy Mars played an EML in Frank Zappas band. He had a really awesome brass/horn sound on it, just listen here /watch?v=1Gr6Re7LKY0&fmt=18 (at 3:05). Can you re-create it?
That dude's got skills! I like that sound he's got around 4:15. Looks like a MiniMoog. Then he plays both synths towards the end. Awesome! I can try to work on that EML sound - I just started messing with that synth again after being in storage a while.
I had the chance to buy one of those for like $1,200.00. Wish I would have. It has a definite unique signal. Nice case too. I like how it packs up, you know.
I've been offered $3K for mine, but it's not for sale. They're rarer than ARP 2600's. It is cool how the 2 parts (keyboard and synth section) fold together for travel.
I like the bandpass sounds. Great use of the continuously variable filter control, and some nice modulations of it there. Maybe you can do the equal tempered scale or demo the patch points next time.
Yeah, I'm a sucker for band pass filters. That's my favorite thing about the Jupiter 6 and JD-800. I have never used the patch points on the EML before. I'll do that sometime and be sure to make a video. I have experimented with the keyboard scaling, but don't know enough about equal tempering. I'll research that and be sure to include it on the next video. Stay tuned!

I wish I had a 101, I just have the 200 box
@moogyboy6: I think this might be a wacky 1.2 V/octave scaling.
jeez I wish I had one, inheritance boy

Powerful analog sound! Fantastic LFO!

Very cool makes me think of low budget sci-fi movies you could easily do soundtracks for them lol

Very nice!! I don't think its as PHAT as minimoog, but certainly very lush, rich and unique

Looks easy to play, no patch cord mayhem. Sounds really good also, clear sounds with no noise or popping.

I inherited an EML 101 and having a difficult time setting it up. Does anyone know how or where to obtain set up info?

is the 101 better/fatter than the minimoog?

i own 2 of these and i love them they have a distinct pungent sound.

Allen ravenstine of Pere Ubu fame used the 101 as an incredibly flexible noise generator!!...one of the great unsung synth heroes!
