The guy that pushed in the early days of the Willys "Jeep" came to work for them from Chrysler (funny how things come around full circle, eh?)... Jeep used to annotate a Willys - Bantam SUV that was fit for off-road use, like the MBs used in the war. I love every Jeep that's been made since 1938, though the owners of the new JKs seem to have missed the whole 'Jeep wave' fad

Yeah, Ford started it off with the GP, and earlier an Off-road based Model-T, they started the slot grille, but they gave up the off-road game for a while (till the Bronco). Than Willys and Bantam made there entries to the off-road military game with the Willys MB and Bantam BRC. Willys brought the MB into the civilian market, which was later bought out by AMC. The origin of the name Jeep was combination of the Popey's character and the Military joining "G" and "P".
