Kansas City, MO 1973,,,,,,,The 43rd Street and 19thand Paseo Boys Club...Coaches Council..Greg Center...KWKI 93.3 FM....them were the days...Parade Park..Wayne Miner.....You got to be from KC to appreciate those sweet memories!
I remember that summer. You and Butch and Jerry cruising down the street in the blue caddy with the white interior and the drop top, parking across the street. Me, looking what I hoped was nonchalant, silently praying you would walk across that street. to me...., any minute now! The summer of 15 year old first love (writing our names together, naming the future babies, slow dancing and daydreaming). Aided and abetted by the soulful sounds of that era! Thank you for posting, made my day!
A Reminder, People, that no matter how bad you think things are for you; there is always, ALWAYS someone in worse condition than yourself. If you see such a person, help them.
Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac Gangsta whitewalls, TV antennas in the back You may not have a car at all But remember brothers and sisters You can still stand tall Just be thankful for what you've got Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac Diamond in the back, sunroof top, diggin the scene With a gangsta lean Gangsta whitewalls, TV antennas in the back
After reading some of these comments I wanted to add some facts but first let me say if you listen to the words it states "Be thankful for what you got" How anyone can think otherwise was not paying attention. Now here are some facts:
A guitar player named Norman Harris played on this track and no Gamble and Huff did not have anything to do with this song. I thought Curtis Mayfield did it for a couple of seconds but remembered it was William Devaughn. These are the facts., end of story.
I remember when I was young listening to this song, I always thought it was about driving the best cars, and having the best of everything. I never knew title, so I was surprised when I learned it was just the opposite, and to be thankful for what you got.
haha the blue caddy at 3:51 my brothers well he sold it acouple years ago but thats when he owned it now he got a 63 impala. 901 SomosunO Lowrider C.C
Reminds me of 1978 in highschool in Saginaw MI. I drove a Candy red& white interior ,Half white vinyl top, chrome spokes with ganster whitewalls and a white tv antenna, white front liscense with craig in red letters. I now driving a mercedes cl550 black with 5 thin spoke (chrome) deep lips 20".Still playing this song
Noone will ever come close to this original version of the song. ...just remember brothers and sisters...you can still be standing tall...just be thankful for what you got...
the original was by curtis mayfield, be thankful. You should google him and check out more of his sounds This was in the black power era and soul brother days. He was cool.
Wrong. This is the original. Curtis did a cover do to the similarities in sound and frankly because every body thought it was him already. This has the Curtom sound the wahs, the organs and afro latin percussion, but Devaughn was actually a post man, an this was like his biggest hit. Its all good. Peace. But no this was not Curtis song. His style maybe but not his song.
@kingofdaundaworld He definitely has Mayfield's falsetto down, but everything about this song belonged to DeVaughn. He even played guitar on this cut and other songs on the album. and you're right about the mellow, gospel feel. He was a pretty devout Jehovahs Witness. Last thing, this song should never be remade by anyone. I can't even imagine how horrible a version would be produced by someone like Ludacris! Christ!
@DickAllen1972 I mean really? You say "he even played guitar" like thats sayin' something or like thats distinguishing him from Mr. Mayfield. At this point its almost offensive. So again. The falsetto, the guitar work which Mayfield is also reknowed for and the percussion is ALL the Mayfield sound. Is it Curtis' song. No. Thats understood but when you play that $100 slab you got, you tell me what other song on their has these characteristics an I'll stand corrected til then...Peace bruh...
@kingofdaundaworld Hey hold on, I wasn't trying to disrespect Mayfield at all. I'm a big fan of CM. My point is this man William DeVaughn wasn't a professional musician per se. He was a regular cat that put it all on the line for this one shot. But make no mistake, this whole deal was his. If you feel he sounds like Mayfield, fine. But truth be told Curtis is nowhere to be found on this album at all. Anywhere. I don't get your hang-up about the guitar, though. But...whatever.
@DickAllen1972 My points are. This is Mayfields early 70's Curtom sound that he created with players like Rich Tufu on percussioins, and lush strings. Curtis is one of the best gospel guitar players outside of cats like Spanky Chalmers, and Pops Staples. Its a sound thing. The thing I love about Devaugh is that he was just a regular cat with a 9 to 5. Thats cool. This here is a 70's case of a cat working someone sound. Like what Trey Songz is doing to R Kelly or Kelly did to Aaron Hall thing
@kingofdaundaworld So what are we arguing about.........? I think we both dig the sound of the early 70's the same amount. I wonder if either DeVaughn or Mayfield ever commented on it back in the day somewhere?
@DickAllen1972 The session featured members of the MFSB group — guitarist Norman Harris, drummer Earl Young, bassist Ron Baker, and vibist Vince Montana — secured by Allan Felder, who also developed the separate adlib back-up chorus with his sister's vocal choir
The record sold nearly two million copies on its release in spring 1974, reaching #1 on the U.S. R&B charts and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, selling a million copies.[5] With a sound and content influenced by Curtis Mayfield,

AWESOME! I don't know who the original singer is of this song, but this is the best version that I came across. I was actually looking for LUDACRIS's version, but I love this one, best! Thanks for sharing.
@kirahna Good to hear. Great to see young listeners be "turned on" to the originals. The whole recycling of music an culture is just one of the great gifts of HIP HOP....
@kingofdaundaworld ..thanks! I've heard this song on the radio, but never really knew who the original singer was. So, while listening to LUDACRIS's version, I came across this one and decided to listen to it. And I really love the original version, better. This is when music was music, lyrics that make sense and mean something. It delivers a positive message. {Just be thankful for what you got} Like my son's friend said to him// "AY, your car maybe a piece of sh*t, but at least you got one."
DeVaughn released this album in 1974 even though the title cut was produced in 1972. At that time, however, he didn't have enough additional material or funds to complete his album. If you can find an original printing in mint condition (probably run you about $100.00) it's totally worth it. The whole LP is first rate. A rumor has it that Lionel Hampton worked the vibes for this cut. It was released in 1998 on CD as a 25th Ann. run, and is available.
