Figgy ended 2011 with a batting average of .188. He was the reason Ichiro didn't get 200 hits this season. It's the responsibility of the #2 hitter to protect the leadoff hitter. In 2010, Figgy hit .259. But that's misleading. On September 1, he was at .218. He then raised his average by 40 points in the rest of the month. The Mariners were 35 games out of first place by that point, so it didn't matter. Mr. Clutch, huh?
It's August 28, 2011, and Chone is hitting .188. Great job, Figgy! You're worth the 36M the Mariners are paying you. You're really doing a nice job of protecting Ichiro in the lineup.
The Angels better make a deal to him QUICK. If they are serious of retaining him. He and the Mariners are close to a 4 yr 36$ Dollar deal. Good for the M's being aggressive with their free agents. They were great last year and and are going to be better with Chone. It looks like the Mariners are running away with him. If the Angels know this, I would call his agent NOW if they want to retain him. The M's should have him by the end of the weekend if they don't.
One of the best deals Angels ever made in recent memory was getting this guy from the Rockies in exchange for some no-name career minor leaguer. The quintessential 4-tool player (only lacks power, but really doesn't need it-lol) who ended up helping the Angels to their first ever WS title in '02. Can't see Chone being moved unless it's a deal that just can't be refused. He's an integral part of Scioscia's "small ball" approach to the game!
