What a bollox, and then she says what an amazing experience that was... really, who ever would believe that!!! this girl would have to be a psycho and she sure does not look like one!!!
@missymiapat I think you are missing the point of this. This is about suggestion. Are you really saying that people are not suggestible and cannot be manipulated. Heck Governments across the world have been at it for centuries.
@computersolutions164 Oh,I totally believe in the power of suggestion,I'm in psychology a lot but I do not buy this episode at all,for me it's directed, which brings the reliability of this show down..reliability in psychology is so important, to show to people it's not some kind of a magic.. plus how can you (the girl) be so cheerful about the experience when you've just realized you are so easily manipulated, but hey it's his show,he likes appreciation, even if fabricated :)
@missymiapat I agree, what a load of shit. Who on earth would hit a button 1 second away from earning 500 quid. You'd have to be mentally retarded, not just susceptible to persuasion. I would have hit the button straight away knowing it wouldn't kill the kitten as it is very much illegal and has NEVER been done on British TV (like he suggested).
@maramyfriend "I would have hit the button straight away" - Well that shows you're not very smart, either, because hitting the button at all forfeits your chance of winning the money! A smart person would have a seat for 5 minutes working out their grocery list and then use the 500 pounds to pay for it!
@maramyfriend So "Oh Wise One" everything Derren does is fake, your words not mine maybe you'd like to enlighten us all as to how he does all his tricks then. Perhaps you could make a video explaining to us meer mortals how they are done then, otherwise I would not make statements you cannot backup, unless of course you are a conjurer / magician / illusionist yourself.
@computersolutions164 Open your mind...its simple. Derren gets an actor to pretend to be a dumb shit. Simple. I mean he walks up to people and puts his hand on their head nad says 'sleep' and they fall to the floor...wtf...does he really think we are that stupid.
@maramyfriend Not at all i've studies NLP based on Bandler, Grinder and the father of hypnosis Milton Eriksson. All of them claim that catalepsy can be induced not in the way Derren does but hypnosis works on about one third of people. Derren deliberately chooses young impressionable female university students, who are ALREADY EXPECTING SOMETHING TO HAPPEN WHEN THEY MEET HIM in advance, so when he clicks his fingers it is no surprise that THEY BELIEVE they've been hypnotised
I know it's hard to hear for the fans, but he's exactly as fake as Cris. She's an actress. Yes, he says he doesn't use actors. He's also a showman and a liar. A good one - better than Cris by miles, but still a fake and a showman. Nearly everything on his shows is a construction. You can't put someone in a trance by interrupting a handshake. You can't memorize a book by running your fingers on it. You can't make a girl electrocute a cat by telling her not to.
i would have never done it. even with the power of negative suggestion at work, i could never push a button that i was told would kill an adorable little kitten. that girl is either really evil, or an actor cuz no decent human being (especially one who owns a cat likes she said she did) would push that button

@AdamsTeinz Which is precisely what Milgram demonstrated in the 50's and 60's
"Obedience to Authority" - he proved that about 60% of humans would kill another human if ther were ORDERED to do so, i.e like the concentration camps etc.
The only difference here is that in the original experiment 3 people were used and not 2
@computersolutions164 That showed that when they were ordered TO DO SO. This time he says she shouldn't kill the cat. That's the difference. Nazis used positive commands, Derren uses negative. Nazis obeyed orders, She basically didn't. He told her not to press the button, she didn't listen.
@computersolutions164 no that experiment people were ordered to do it and did it because they listened to authority over evreything ... this is telling someone not to do something and them choosing to do it anyway
The contents of the show seem a little shabby... But I do know that Derren does have a good understanding of the human psyche and that he does in fact know how to hypnotize under some circumstances. The subjects in the show are probably screened through thousands of volunteers that are highly hypnotizable. If not, then this show is fake because not everybody's conscience isn't this fragile.
Did any one see that 0001 on the bottom right hand corner on part 2 and at the last second is when she push the button. LOL I'm just asking if anyone else seen that.
@EDXProduction Perhaps, perhaps not. But I'm pretty sure if you asked anyone who participated in a Milgram experiment (see Derren's Bank Robbery trick) beforehand, they would have all sworn they'd never elctro-torture another person, and yet many do. A variation of that experiment was done recently on French TV is.gd / flDQm
@KandyMan1121 True, that's what the danger of being in that mind state. As an adult if you never matured enough to know the difference and be able to take a step back when presented a problem, then you haven't learned enough in life. In this case, the woman was obviously weak. It's just that Derren here played that to the max. While some may able to resist the suggestion, a majority of the population is weak. Why do you think advertising work so well?
@KandyMan1121 He also heightened the pressure by repeating the command as well as the countdown. At the last 20 seconds, the subject is caught up in the moment that her only option is to "Press the button" which essentially would kill the cat. You obviously can tell she did not want to (notice the tears), but her thought process was telling her thats her only option.
That was Derren's whole point of the exercise. Negative suggestions can be bad for us when making decisions in life.
@KandyMan1121 That's exactly what Derren was doing during the experiment. You say that she is not 2 years old, but Derren brought her back to that young mind state. And if you saw the whole episode you would notice the pattern that all the kids pressed the button.
The drawing of the cat was a test for Derren to see if he had successfully brought her into that child's mindset. Just comparing the drawing the second time, it was more of a childlike sketch of the cat opposed to her more detailed one
@KandyMan1121 I think you too are missing the point. This was an experioment in negative persuasion and suggestion, nothing more. No animals were harmed at all. It was done to demonstrate what we are all capable of with the right "triggers" subconsciously
@EdTheBadass Why oh why do people keep missing the point with Derren's work. If you watch some of Derrens' earlier work you will see that he did persuade someone to pay him out on a losing ticket at the dog track. He has said on one occasion that he will never do this again though.
@EdTheBadass Of course he wouldn't if you were not open to suggestion, but everyone IS open to suggestion in some form or other and even though you are consciously say "I bet he can't", just read a bit of Milton Erikson and you will find that you might be mistaken.
Why on earth do you think Derren picks his "volunteers" very carefully, usually young females, even in his live shows of which I have seen a couple.
Watch out for Wednesday "Hero at 30,000 feet" his latest stunt involving a plane.
@computersolutions164 i saw that one, i think it was Awesome. i had to think about ethics and all that for a bit, but hey, Whatever works right. and it did.
@EdTheBadass I know i've read that James Randii holds Derren in quite high regard and to get that sort of accolade from a man offering a million dollars to anyone who can prove that they have psychic ability, must be quite something. Obviously Mr Randii thinks Derren carries out his trade in an honest fashion.
I see this experiment in another way. This is a manner of how she is free or not. Whatever anyone would suggest me anything, I would or not follow him, after judging, and lead my own way. The way of mind she took was relying in "to push or not to push" and was totally inside the game another person has led her into, so she wasn't free in anyway cause she was "inside" imo... (sry about my bad english)
@Helwor If I had a penny for every time I had heard that I would have £547.73
If something is suggested strongly enough AND if you are of a suggestible nature then it will work. I went and saw Derren again last night, very good show.
@Helwor Not quite no because submission is a conscious decision where as suggestion is just that - suggestion, Derren is pointing out the power of suggestion in particular negative suggestion, Submission is something that is done willingly and knowingly
@computersolutions164 both are at work here of course, as Derren exploit the personality of the girl, as he said at the start, so the suggestion of derren plus the personality negative and submitted of her..
Remember the two doors at the beginning? If she picked "trick" then the other door would lead to the same room only this time the cage is properly connected to the main generator and the button does the job just fine. Oh, and there probably wouldn't be any money for killing the cute little kitten : )

So, you like... will build their self-esteem or sumthin, right?
Then you have learned nothing. The point is not to provide a harm free environment because there is no such thing, let alone give suggestions. The point is to teach them that out there and in self, there are both types of suggestions, explain how they work and explain how to deal with them. You main thrust should be to teach them how to think. That may be difficult, given you predisposition not to use your brain.
1. This is "NOT" magic, this is based on well known psychological techniques as pioneered by Milton Erickson M.D going back to the 1950's
2. What has your height to to do with anything and why do you think you are so superior - you know nothing about me at all. I will tell you though that I do in fact own my own company and have done since 1988.
3. I certainly don't envy you at all. I am at a loss as to what makes you assume incorrectly that I do, but then I was young & arrogant too once
i would never have killed that cat i mean..5 minutes is not that long and besides one woudl get lots of money afterwards, i woudl just sit in the chair drink my lemonade, perhaps taken a nap or something like that...but then again... thats wha i think i owuld have done, i havent been in that exact situation so...who am i to judge?
Yeah, I'm skeptical that he could pull off the childhood regression thing with a middle-aged adult who has a family of their own rather than a 19 year-old girl still living with her parents.
True true, and probably very relevant, but if I'm put in that girls shoes when I have reached 40 with wife and kids, I still think this might be more of a suggestive hell than I think. You don't really know before you're in that situation with Derren peering those eyes at you telling you to draw cats :P
I'm sure that we are all susceptible to negatvie suggestion, but I'm not sure that we would all push the button. She was obviously chosen very carefully for this role. It's nonetheless a very clear window into the workings of our minds. It was very emotional to watch as well as informative.
It's not just negative suggestion at play here...He's making the decision for her having lemonade instead of tea. He's banging the table like an angry father figure that you know is going to beat you blue when you kill the fuc** cat. He tells her to draw cats. He never let's her stop thinking about it. She's a 10 year old when he leaves that room. Hell, I promise you, if any of you were put into that room you would've pressed the button under those kind of methods.
Do I have to elaborate my personal profile and inform you on my current status of education? I am in third year uni majoring in PSYCHOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE. Furthermore, this man DID SAY he sometimes puts on a show with actors. Perhaps his understanding of the word sometimes might be surprisingly similar to my understanding of the word always.
Jesus christ you fool. Fools like you must be the ones making up all the shit in the world. Or are you an expert troll?
I have most of Derren Brown's archive pretty well from when he started, I also have his very very first video. Please could you tell me EXACTLY where he says that "He sometimes puts on a show with actors"
You will find that Derren goes to great lengths to attempt to prove that he doesn't. You might well be a Psychology student in your 3rd year. I like Psychology too and thats - great.
I hope you don't end up working in McDonalds like most grads & actually get to use your degree instead.
@computersolutions164 I remember him saying something to the effect he does not use actors or stooges on the intro of Mind control. But some of his effects obviously use some help but not as the mark. People can be scared of his stuff and cry fake all day. watch the end of the show and he will straight show you the tape of his tricks that do NOT work out. He is very up front and honest about everything going on.
I am certainly no troll, I am not covered in hair or have 3 toes on each foot and go "Ug" all the time either.
However I have studies Milton Ericksson as well as Banachek and I would say that in the "MAGIC" part of Derren's work he uses the same techniques as other magicians.
I would however also say that in the "PSYCHOLOGY" part of his work, remember he does both, I cannot recall a single time he has ever said that he uses stooges or actors, to the best of my knowledge.
Why is it all idiots with a degree have this inbuilt desire to show off to all us far lesser and probably much dumber mortals that they can actually read a book and write a thesis on it. It really is patronising.
These days you can get a degree in how to fold a duvet properly - it means nothing at all, that's why the UK has gone to the dogs. Too many dumb grads in jobs they know nothing about and were selected for entirely the wrong reasons.
This is not fake. I have seen this in my everyday life, and have experienced it. I think you all have, but maybe you're just not aware of it. I do not care of deegrees or education here, this to me is common sense.
I wouldnt ever push the button..... ever. I mean... I'm sure theres other situations that I might crumble to... but not this. why owuld you push the button?
listen cupcake. you cant tell me that you think this is real? she wouldnt wait ONE second... ONE MORE SECOND without pushing the button KNOWING that she would KILL A CAT??? I wouldnt do it. If they put some hot chic in front of me and said "dont fuck her" i'm SURE i would. so no re read my statement i didnt say it works on anyone except me. but i knkow quite a few people who would have no problem not killing a cat.
If you payed attention, on the back of the kitten's box there was tape with "00 01" on it. Which is also precisely when she pressed the button. There are many other factors at work here pressing her to push the button. Another example is that he repeatedly fired off an anchor of "don't" and when all of that is combined it can in fact be very overwhelming.
@computersolutions164 What cracks me up is the people who say "Fake" the are discrediting blatant science and they are the ones this trick would be the easiest to do to. Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses.
@apexvector1 I know it's terribly sad when people won't credit all that work done in the 50's by Eriksson, Milgram, Pavlov to name just three experts in this field and many many others. People ALWAYS say that negative suggestion won't work on them. I'd love to put that to the test, under these sort of conditions, then we'll see how jumped up and pretentious they really are.
I agree computersolutions164, this is not like it's your best friend and you thinking, " Hey let's use a little negative suggestion". This is a trained showman and manipulator at work here. To this poor girls demise, he knows what he's doing. Our mind might be a beautiful and advanced machine, but it is surprisingly easy to fool and control. Just look at religion....
Yes, quite sure. Why do people always doubt that? Besides, if it wasn't actually negative suggestion as he says, he could still have used hypnosis which we know he can do.
I saw it coming that she was going to end up pressing the button and it was not going to be wired with the box. Boy I loved the part where he makes her draw another kitten and it is a much more childish drawn.
You'll have to sign up to be in one of Derren's shows then. We all THINK we know how we would act in a given situation, quite often the reverse is true though.
Cat lover gets 500 pounds if she doesnt push the red button and kill the kitten within 5 minutes.
Yet she still pushes the button. It doesnt make sense.
If she was told in a different way example: "Do not kill the kitten, here is a button, you have 5 minutes. If kitten lives you get 500 pounds."
Than she would be stressed out. BUT now she knows if she pressed the button she would kill the kitten and NOT win 500 pounds. Why the bloody hell did she press it? Is she that weak minded?
You are missing the point. Derren was demonstrating how powerful negative suggestion can be. If you tell someone NOT to DO something then the chances are that they will do it.
there is no coincidences with Derren Brown. He's super smart and a good person that shows us what we all should know about! One of the few persons I would feel honored to meet!
it's not the milgrim test; this is negative suggestion
milgrim test is about how people obey orders given to them regardless of moral dilemma because they respect authority; this demonstration is about how people embrace reverse psychology under stress because they keep thinking about the consequences
milgrim test always has someone 'egging' them on, this one was a self-reflective decision
Actually the two are quite similar but test different people perceptions of whaty they think will happen and what actually does happen. This as you say deals with negative suggestion as opposed to appearing to shock someone deliberately with a fake machine.
It is Milgram by the way not Milgrim as in Stanley Milgram. the two are similar, although Milgram was testing obedience in his original experiment, rather than negative suggestion.
Derren 's not evil he just tests the boundaries of your perception and is very good at reading people and knowing how they will act in advance to a particular situation or stimulus. The thing to remember with Derren is that he ALWAYS controls the outcome of anything he does. He often leaves the audience bewildered because he has been several steps ahead of them the whole time. His tricks are not difficult, but the planning and presentation that is the clever bit, & where he scores over others.
$500 is kinda expensive. I usually spend only around $350 killing kittens every week. With all the market competition inside the kitten-killing service industry, I expect a further price drop.
This is NOT the Milgram Test -- I wouldn't say that it is modern qualifies it for testing a timeless phenomenon as negative suggestion. This seems like a hoax, at least I hope no humans would ever kill at kitten. I mean...there was money offered for her not to kill the kitten. And yeah to the person below me, what if it was a trick?
So... what would he have done if she picked trick? *Opens door* *Gets mauled by a lion*

He can only do these experiments on weak willed people.
themandude20 1 year ago
@KandyMan1121 True, that's what the danger of being in that mind state. As an adult if you never matured enough to know the difference and be able to take a step back when presented a problem, then you haven't learned enough in life. In this case, the woman was obviously weak. It's just that Derren here played that to the max. While some may able to resist the suggestion, a majority of the population is weak. Why do you think advertising work so well?
gguerrero11 1 year ago
@KandyMan1121 He also heightened the pressure by repeating the command as well as the countdown. At the last 20 seconds, the subject is caught up in the moment that her only option is to "Press the button" which essentially would kill the cat. You obviously can tell she did not want to (notice the tears), but her thought process was telling her thats her only option.
That was Derren's whole point of the exercise. Negative suggestions can be bad for us when making decisions in life.
gabman6 1 year ago
@KandyMan1121 That's exactly what Derren was doing during the experiment. You say that she is not 2 years old, but Derren brought her back to that young mind state. And if you saw the whole episode you would notice the pattern that all the kids pressed the button.
The drawing of the cat was a test for Derren to see if he had successfully brought her into that child's mindset. Just comparing the drawing the second time, it was more of a childlike sketch of the cat opposed to her more detailed one
gabman6 1 year ago
@KandyMan1121 I think you too are missing the point. This was an experioment in negative persuasion and suggestion, nothing more. No animals were harmed at all. It was done to demonstrate what we are all capable of with the right "triggers" subconsciously

@EdTheBadass Why oh why do people keep missing the point with Derren's work. If you watch some of Derrens' earlier work you will see that he did persuade someone to pay him out on a losing ticket at the dog track. He has said on one occasion that he will never do this again though.
computersolutions164 1 year ago
@computersolutions164
lol.. ok. try it.
I'll go further - I'll bet Derren 1000$ that he cannot implement any suggestion in my mind.
His explanations are laughable. Do yuo really believe if it is so easy, that the Whole World wouldn't use it :D
So naive. How old are you?
Btw - dig out discussion at JREF forum about Derren. People have good opinions on Derren there too
EdTheBadass 1 year ago
@EdTheBadass Of course he wouldn't if you were not open to suggestion, but everyone IS open to suggestion in some form or other and even though you are consciously say "I bet he can't", just read a bit of Milton Erikson and you will find that you might be mistaken.
Why on earth do you think Derren picks his "volunteers" very carefully, usually young females, even in his live shows of which I have seen a couple.
Watch out for Wednesday "Hero at 30,000 feet" his latest stunt involving a plane.

@happyking9 100 pennies to a pound
computersolutions164 1 year ago
@computersolutions164 so you agree with me, when you talk about suggestive nature, I talk about submission, that s about the same
Helwor 1 year ago
@Helwor Not quite no because submission is a conscious decision where as suggestion is just that - suggestion, Derren is pointing out the power of suggestion in particular negative suggestion, Submission is something that is done willingly and knowingly
computersolutions164 1 year ago
@computersolutions164 both are at work here of course, as Derren exploit the personality of the girl, as he said at the start, so the suggestion of derren plus the personality negative and submitted of her..

Yeah, I'm skeptical that he could pull off the childhood regression thing with a middle-aged adult who has a family of their own rather than a 19 year-old girl still living with her parents.
iophobon 2 years ago
True true, and probably very relevant, but if I'm put in that girls shoes when I have reached 40 with wife and kids, I still think this might be more of a suggestive hell than I think. You don't really know before you're in that situation with Derren peering those eyes at you telling you to draw cats :P
Ulfmakkatrulf 2 years ago
I'm sure that we are all susceptible to negatvie suggestion, but I'm not sure that we would all push the button. She was obviously chosen very carefully for this role. It's nonetheless a very clear window into the workings of our minds. It was very emotional to watch as well as informative.
cofycup 2 years ago
It's not just negative suggestion at play here...He's making the decision for her having lemonade instead of tea. He's banging the table like an angry father figure that you know is going to beat you blue when you kill the fuc** cat. He tells her to draw cats. He never let's her stop thinking about it. She's a 10 year old when he leaves that room. Hell, I promise you, if any of you were put into that room you would've pressed the button under those kind of methods.
All creds to Derren Brown!
Ulfmakkatrulf 2 years ago
Agreed - Anyone would press the button, even the ones who swear blind that they wouldn't.
It is the "anchoring", the "suggestion" and the "regression" that make it work.
It is a wonderful piece.

Just what the fuck is wrong with you? Do you work for Derren? For fuck's sake. IT IS FAKE.
jayoori1 2 years ago
Why do you think it is fake then ? Derren never uses stooges and never has done for this particular area of his work
You have obviously never heard of "Negative Suggestion" then.
computersolutions164 2 years ago
Do I have to elaborate my personal profile and inform you on my current status of education? I am in third year uni majoring in PSYCHOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE. Furthermore, this man DID SAY he sometimes puts on a show with actors. Perhaps his understanding of the word sometimes might be surprisingly similar to my understanding of the word always.
Jesus christ you fool. Fools like you must be the ones making up all the shit in the world. Or are you an expert troll?
jayoori1 2 years ago
I have most of Derren Brown's archive pretty well from when he started, I also have his very very first video. Please could you tell me EXACTLY where he says that "He sometimes puts on a show with actors"
You will find that Derren goes to great lengths to attempt to prove that he doesn't. You might well be a Psychology student in your 3rd year. I like Psychology too and thats - great.
I hope you don't end up working in McDonalds like most grads & actually get to use your degree instead.
computersolutions164 2 years ago
@computersolutions164 I remember him saying something to the effect he does not use actors or stooges on the intro of Mind control. But some of his effects obviously use some help but not as the mark. People can be scared of his stuff and cry fake all day. watch the end of the show and he will straight show you the tape of his tricks that do NOT work out. He is very up front and honest about everything going on.
apexvector1 1 year ago
I am certainly no troll, I am not covered in hair or have 3 toes on each foot and go "Ug" all the time either.
However I have studies Milton Ericksson as well as Banachek and I would say that in the "MAGIC" part of Derren's work he uses the same techniques as other magicians.
I would however also say that in the "PSYCHOLOGY" part of his work, remember he does both, I cannot recall a single time he has ever said that he uses stooges or actors, to the best of my knowledge.
computersolutions164 2 years ago
Why is it all idiots with a degree have this inbuilt desire to show off to all us far lesser and probably much dumber mortals that they can actually read a book and write a thesis on it. It really is patronising.
These days you can get a degree in how to fold a duvet properly - it means nothing at all, that's why the UK has gone to the dogs. Too many dumb grads in jobs they know nothing about and were selected for entirely the wrong reasons.
computersolutions164 2 years ago

Luccabrozzo 2 years ago
If you payed attention, on the back of the kitten's box there was tape with "00 01" on it. Which is also precisely when she pressed the button. There are many other factors at work here pressing her to push the button. Another example is that he repeatedly fired off an anchor of "don't" and when all of that is combined it can in fact be very overwhelming.
LogicSoup 2 years ago
As one previous person put it - Negative suggestion works on everyone else except you then

apexvector1 1 year ago
@apexvector1 I know it's terribly sad when people won't credit all that work done in the 50's by Eriksson, Milgram, Pavlov to name just three experts in this field and many many others. People ALWAYS say that negative suggestion won't work on them. I'd love to put that to the test, under these sort of conditions, then we'll see how jumped up and pretentious they really are.

I agree computersolutions164, this is not like it's your best friend and you thinking, " Hey let's use a little negative suggestion". This is a trained showman and manipulator at work here.
Is she that weak minded?

it's not the milgrim test; this is negative suggestion
milgrim test is about how people obey orders given to them regardless of moral dilemma because they respect authority; this demonstration is about how people embrace reverse psychology under stress because they keep thinking about the consequences
milgrim test always has someone 'egging' them on, this one was a self-reflective decision
fission2 2 years ago
