I have an old 78 rpm record of "Shina no Yoru (China Night)" and I prefer it to to the later orchestration on a 33-1/3 record, both sung by Hamako Watanabe. By the way, Watanabe was not a spy, but she did sing a lot of songs about China in Japanese including Yeh Lai Hsiang. Yoshiko Yamaguchi, also known as Shirley Yamaguchi in the West, was born in Manchuria and did appear in Japanese propaganda films, one of which was "Shina no Yoru."

Hmmm, I am thinking that this singer might have been an influence on Hibari Misora. Listen to how she plays with phrasing, Hibari has a flavor like this from a very young age.

As a teenager I found this 78 in my grandmothers collection of records after she passed away in 1982. I believe she brought it back from a trip to Japan that she and my grandfather had taken in the 50's. Twenty-Seven years after finding this 78, I still love hearing it, along with every pop and crackle that have become a part of this wonderful song.  Thanks for posting this video.

Stupid Chinese, She was beautiful with sweet voice, but In fact, she was a spy for Japanese Army during Japan occupied China in WW2. Chinese dont be so fool to thrust her.
