actually, in the book Wicked Elphaba did melt, Fiyero died, and Galinda is never hiding in the corner watching this happen. Gregory McGuire ends the book with the reader guessing if Elphaba did die. The last few sentences are "And there the Wicked Old Witch stayed for a long time." "And did she ever come out?"
