  • Why isn't this song on iTunes?!!!

  • i ain't gonna play SUN CITY : I live on.... Nelson MANDELA Mail (there is a commemorative) and the other door opens to Dulcie SEPTEMBER Place !!!... It's no joke !!!... and it was not premeditated goal...it suits perfectly well with my ideals though it's not in a Palace !... I'm proud of it !

  • I love this song :)... But I want more Joey Ramone in this!... That's a pitty :)

  • In this classic, inspiring video, we bid Rest in Peace to Clarence Clemons .... and Bono's mullet.

  • 3 people played Sun City.

  • @guitardedboy

Things have changed a bit since 88...

  • gives me chills in 2012.

  • Btw, I think the song kicks ass. I was about..10 or 11 when it came out so I didn't really understand what it meant back then.

  • R.I.P. Joey Ramone. <3

  • a horrible song

  • Actually, musicinhistory, it did hit #38 in Billboard, 12-14-85, here in the good ol' USA!

  • Who are all the singers and rappers in the vid?

  • @DaveWollenberg Take a pop music course, or do it yourself. You're painful.

  • best part is right at the end 7:14 where the Africans harmonise!

  • did Queen play there for $1,000,000 before or after this song came out?

  • I had never heard this before now, just today I found a mint copy of the 7" single, and thought I may as well buy it, and i'm glad i did - great song!!

  • Way to go Sil, "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"

  • ringo and his kid!

  • And this was the beginning of the end of civilization in South Africa.

  • @m46279 You're scum. Look up "civilization" in the dictionary. Or don't. You're entitled...

  • Michael Monroe from Finlad sings there too

  • I think the people of Sun City are grateful that Fat Boys aren't gonna play.

  • After all these years, I finally remembered this gem from the past, which I thought was a silly overrated song at the time, but now think of it as political and opportunistic political posturing, taken much more seriously than it should have. To begin, we have the wise gurus from the ghetto, who are so full of wisdom and an exemplary life on welfare, I cannot but laugh out loud at their arrogance. Then we have Little Steven Van Zandt who stole his stare and moves from Prince... badly. Hahahahaha

  • @SpandexManney Well, for someone who was heavily involved in the movement at the time to get governments (including the U.S. government) and educational institutions (in my case my alma mater, 1987), the University of South Florida to divest funds (including spending several days in the winter/spring of 1986 in shanty town building set up on USF's Tampa campus) when I was 22 years old at the time, this was very inspiring that all these artists lent their voice to the cause. It kept us going ..

  • @sneeyize45 ... especially the appearance of The Boss on this.

  • My sister bought the tape (Yep. Them wuz the days..) Still remember every line. Just watched a video of a tourist near Sun City. He was on one those for the wealthy trips . He was riding an elephant. He was wearing a necklace... IT HAD AN IMAGE OF A ELEPHANT MADE OUT OF IVORY. Ironic dont you think? Does he even know or care what Sun City is or that his guides and their elephants are making peanuts to carry his fat butt around? Just amazing.

  • this was really good

  • no offense to young people but unless you were around in those times you can't understand the passion. this song has great meaning!!

  • @MrTupelo64 - It was the song that brought the reality of apartheid to the American people. I was in high school and it made us talk about what was happening. We wrote letters. Learned about Nelson Mandela and Biko. Very powerful.

  • In this time of corporate overlords, will we ever have a collaberation Luke this again?

  • Well, this worked out as well as every other attempt at liberalism. hasn't it?

  • little steven and company great video great artist helped destroy apartied system.

  • @abab0s Yea im no pedophile by the way.

  • @abab0s Oh you mean the "Evening chat with Konata Izumi"? That a parody video for this anime called lucky star pal..not being a pedophile there.

  • @abab0s Pretty much yea; I'm glad you understood because from what you typed earlier looked like you don't even have a high school diploma and are probably married to your cousin.

  • whats the song at 0:23?

    the first song?

    is it commercial?

or was it just made for this?

  • @ThePunisherNWO It's just the intro to the song.

  • *___* I love this song :) who is the guy with the fan at 1:59??

  • How many of the big mouths, giving their five cents worth on this video, actually lived or still lives in South Africa? Were you here before and after apartheid? let's see if you any of you actually have a spine?

  • crack addicts paid by some liberals for make political songs... now in south africa for hire a white man must hire 7 blacks for LAW, white cant own over 49% of new company and HIV+ people get job easyly than everybody else by law. The crime rate is the worst in the world,CORRUPTION,RAPE, BLACK ON BLACK AND BLACK ON WHITE CRIME IS EVERYDAY ROUTINE! SOUTH AFRICA WAS BETTER BEFORE IDIOTS! WAS ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!

  • @TheUnioneuropean sir are you a republican? Let me guess you probably live in the boondocks and think you are filthy rich.. People like you i don't understand;as a matter of fact why do you even type? You have such a bad grammar and then you try and type some offensive crap here on youtube..If your trying to defend you ethnicity somehow, you did so in vain because you made yourself look like a fool. Dumbass!

  • this was a great project and it helped to raise awareness of what the devil was doing in South Africa

  • And wonder if the American artists would ever gather again and raise awareness about violent racist farm attacks, torture, rape and systematic genocide that takes place against the white South African minority today, now that the tables have been turned. I wonder if they will ever sing about the ANC government singing "Shoot the Boer" and encouraging black people to kill whites, which is obviously no less racist than the Apartheid was.

Unfortunately, I know my country good enough to say, never.

  • @MSfeller you can't be serious.

  • @fdmadops What part of it you don't think I'm being serious about? So, you agrew with what's going on with the white people down in South Africa, because they are white? What kind of bigoted double standard would that be? I would agree if you told me that same sentence if I was being a bigot or saying nasty things about Africa or black people but all I did was to point out that what happens today against the Boers in South Africa is nothing shorter than genocide. If you support that just say it.

  • @MSfeller You are a liar. Whites in South Africa are one of the most privileged populations in the world. They own 90% of the Johannesburg stock exchange, live in wealthy gated communities, and still control most of the country's economy. Whites in ZA live a charmed life.

There is no "systematic genocide" unless you are talking about the appalling neglect poor Black South Africans still face 17 years after apartheid's official end.

  • @86am First of all, fuck you. Don't call a man a liar unless he actually lied, you disrespectful punk. Your channel isn't even available for me to see, so you are either hiding who you really are and stand for, or you blocked me before I could even see who you are. But again, I haven't said a lie here.

Now, I have been to Johannesburg recently and my grandparents have been living there for almost 3 decades. The only reason they live in gated communities is for security, NOT social status.

  • @MSfeller Were there a "systematic genocide" being waged against the "white South African minority today" your grandparents would certainly not have be living the charmed life they are today. You are indeed a liar.

I don't have any biographical information or videos on my channel for you to see; it is of no consequence to this discussion. A look at your channel however suggests a pathological grievance against Blacks. Just another youtube bigot with a chip on his shoulder.

  • @86am Again, fuck you. You might as well call the UN and Human Rights Watch liars. The only liar here is you, racist coward.

And your lies continue. There's nothing on my channel against blacks. In fact, I have a good black audience and several black friends that pick banjo. But to you, a small minded bigot, picking a banjo and being a white Southerner, or having a flag that represents my heritage means I'm hateful. You belittle me based on old racial stereotypes.

    Don't waste my time, bigot.

  • @MSfeller Whites in South Africa have the highest median income of any group and still control the country's economy. By your own admission, your supposed grandparents have not been culled in any "genocide". Whites are not any more the targets of "genocide" than Black crime victims, but I don't expect you to speak up for them.

It's rich to see a pro-slavery, pro apartheid fool call anyone but himself a bigot. Why are you in Scotland? A village in America is missing its idiot.

  • @86am None of your business where I move, so fuck off. Now I am pro-slavery too? When did I say that? I can see that you know nothing of American History - stay out of it. And I can see that you're one of those idiots that seem to think that only black people have been slaves in human history. You have no scope in history, only what happened recently matters - because it suits your own bigoted purposes. Why don't you join the New Black Panther Party, they're always looking for guys like you?

  • @MSfeller So what you're saying is you're only for Black slavery?

You are the one who is ignorant of American history if you think Southern secession was about anything other than the issue of slavery. Why don't you read their declaration of independence or the individual states' declarations of secession? Your adoption of white supremacist imagery as part of your "heritage" shows you for the ignoramus you are.

  • @86am And I am done arguing with you, because the only village idiot here is you. You accused me of being racist, when you are the bigot here. Then you accused me of being pro-slavery, when I have never said such thing, based on a flag and a war you know nothing about. In fact Africa is the only place I know where modern slavery is a real trade, among blacks themselves, but of course you don't care about those people, as they don't benefit your cause. And I never said I was pro-apartheid. LIAR.

  • @MSfeller Bigoted how exactly? I'm not the one adorning my page and banjo with confederate symbols or writing racist agitprop on anti-apartheid videos.

Don't write nonsense under anti-apartheid videos if you don't like your lies being challenged, loser.

  • @86am And also, when did I ever say genocide in Johannesburg? Do you have any idea of South Africa's geography? I mentioned farm attacks. That implies they live in farms, not in some Johannesburg gated community. The United Nations have released several reports on the very high modern number of whites living in poverty in South Africa. Well reputed Human Rights groups have criticized the RSA government for doing nothing against farm attacks. So please, spare me of your bigoted views on whites.

  • AUAA hit #38 in Billboard, 12-14-85. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great week!

  • were all of these people actually asked to play sun city? if not, their proclamation is meaningless. this song accomplished nothing.

  • Where's the video of Little Steven and Bruce performing this live? I cant find it :-/ I just wanna see it for Bruce's legendary dance moves!

  • Loved it then , love it now.

Don't know if music stars would do it now, who know's.

  • @bigdude1949

    It's spelled -trippled- not "trebled"

Thats because living standards are going up. Most diseases are being obliterated, with western medicine. Education has gone up, and the Flynn effect raises IQ among the Africans. If we stop, it will make no difference, there are businesses that have already invested in Africa.

  • @bigdude1949

And yet, here you are, commenting on other people's business. You should follow your own advise. Drink some beer, hump your girlfriend, and leave these matters to the grownups.

  • Complete fucking madness!

  • Post-apartheid South Africa isn't a cesspool of corruption, decay, crime, ignorance, and poverty in any way, shape or form. It hasn't gone from a thriving (by African standards) nation to a laughing stock at all! Blacks are totally capable of running successful countries! Look at the history of civilization in Africa...wait. Well, there was Egypt, whose proximity to Mediterranea, southern Europe, and Arabia was totally coincidental! Also look at all the successful modern black nations...wait.

  • @MaximusRelaximus shhhh let's not think unpleasant thoughts.

  • @MaximusRelaximus

Ghana, Botswana, Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique to name a few a couple are moderately good countries.

The ANC is shit, since Mandela left, they're tribal big mouths, what do you expect?

In terms of Ancient Africa: Abyssinia, Great Zimbabwe, Mali, Songhai, Nubia to name a few.

Dude you have to stop venting and look around. Blacks suck, but not to the 100% total failure which you postulate. Your not even going to listen to this "liberal" BS so forget about it I guess.

  • @Aurelian603 Not at all. I'm just tired of the whole "race is a social construct" nonsense, when there are very real and obvious differences beyond skin color. But recognizing such obvious realities and scientific fact is instantly labelled "ignorance." We live in a world where knowledge is ignorance and belief in bizarre, misguided delusions is enlightenment.

  • All Sun City performers were placed on a blacklist by the U.N. for violating their resolution. To be removed from the blacklist they had to express regret and promise not to perform in SA until apartheid was ended. All complied except Linda Ronstadt who was paid a whopping half million. She was the only Sun City performer to refuse and remain on the UN blacklist. In fact she refuses to this day.

  • van zandt looks like rico suave

  • @bigdude1949 left wingers dont understand much of anything, they are bi-polar

  • Blacks being relocated & disenfranchised to build a resort/golf course that will be predominantly patronized by rich white people. Apartheid South Africa in the 70's, or 2011 in America? Please see "Benton Harbor, Michigan." Rachel Maddow did a great piece on it. Made me cry.

  • I SEE dylan AT 4:15 yes!

  • @polpot28 some of these artists are still very fampus. you cant say you've never heard of Bob Dylan, the songwriter who started the career of so many bands like The Byrds, Beatles, CSN, and more. and Ringo Starr- former drummer for The Beatles- the most famous British rock group in history. and Jackson Browne is still alive and touring, hes a friend of Springsteen & Ronstadt, and is hte the rock and roll hall of fame, as wel las a major political and social activist.

  • Being that both Nelson Mandela is out of prison, and Apartheid is over, is it safe to play Sun City now? Let me know!

  • While attending Mr. Magic's wake last year on October 7th,Kurtis Blow and I had a conversation about this track. He told me nobody bothered to pay a visit to South Africa after when this joint came out.

  • @GigglinMarley

Are you really as stupid and downright ignorant as you've chosen to present yourself here? This was a major video in its time, and these were major artists, and you come off as a racist fool.

    Just asking.

  • @sweetcurmudgeon For your information, this video never aired, and most people dont know about it. Even South Africans, Fact! A 26 year old song that nobody even cares about if you are not South African. Ask anybody in Europe or America if they ever heard or care about this, they will answer NO, because Live Aid happened in the same year and the only thing people care about is the consert. Not about South Africa. And Racist? Whats my ignorance go t to do with racism!? You are the racist!

  • @GigglinMarley

You're not only an idiot, but an ignorant one to boot. You are dead wrong on the facts. This video DID air at the time, and received HEAVY air time on MTV. I saw it, as did most of the posters on this thread. You have an infantile belief that if YOU didn't see it, then it must not have ever aired. As to what your ignorance has to do with racism it's pretty obvious that your racism SPRINGS from your undeniable ignorance.

  • @sweetcurmudgeon Continue with the insults, read what the fuck i wrote. Nobody knows about this shit song in Europe and America! And racism?! Its very fucking obvious that South Africa was better off when apartheid was in power and when zimbabwe was called Rhodesia. Fact! And in real life, i would still say the same and hold on to it. Because nobody cares about SA! Do what you do best and go lay under a banana tree with your mouth open,

  • @GigglinMarley

Putting an exclamation point after the word fact does not actually make it a fact... you do know that, don't you? You're stupidity and your racism are truly breathtaking. I know about this video. The other posters here know about it. Your ignorance and stupidity, fortunately, are NOT universal. You are a drooling, mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, chest-thumping fool.

And, by the way, I'm white, and so, kid, your racist comeback sadly misses the mark.

  • @sweetcurmudgeon Know what, why dont you go fuck yourself and get a life outside the internet. Nobody cares what you have to say here. And kid?!, im 31 years old and could care less about this shit. You wanna win this fight, then you are the winner. You happy now? Make you feel more secure with yourself?!... Get a life.

  • @GigglinMarley

Ahhhh... so sad. I made the Nazi cry.

  • @sweetcurmudgeon Yeah you did. Feel better now that you have hurted and insulted another person? I hope i made your day.

  • @sweetcurmudgeon I also saw and remember it well Little Stevie of E-street band was a major source in putting it together

  • @stuckeysamuel

Unbelievable, isn't it? Some of these posters are like toddlers playing peekaboo: if they don't notice something, then it must not exist. When given the opportunity to broaden their horizons a bit, they instead get angry, suck their thumbs, drink their beer, and lapse into the comforts of racist revisionism.

  • This was Steve Van Zant song and project not Peter gabriel

  • to answer a couple of questions...yes that is both Bono and Ringo Starr.

  • Is the guy at 4:19 Bono from U2?

    I've always wondered!!

  • Linda Ronstadt had no problems shilling for money at Sun City while outside the gates people were being slaughtered to pay her fee.

  • at the very end of the song is the African hymm song -very heart touching! dont know what its called

  • In regards to BJR1977's comment about it having Peter Gabriel written all over it, its true. Peter Gabriel felt strongly about the situation in apartheid South Africa. The fact that he got such talents as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Rait, Paul Simon, and Bruce Springsteen shows that he wasn't the only one concerned for the treatment of blacks in South Africa.

  • wow tht's terribly overproduced!

  • Can someone tell me who is playing the drums during this vid coz it looked like Ringo Starr was playing the drums but could'nt say for sure.

  • @IATM29: It was Ringo and his son, Zak Starkey.

  • It's got Gabriel written all over it!

  • holy shit silvio dante @1:06

  • My all-time favorite "cause" record of the 1980's. And what a cause it was. What a line-up, too---Miles Davis, Run DMC, Afrikka Bambattaa, Kurtis Blow, Pete Townsend, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Pat Benatar, Bruce!, George Clinton, Joey Ramone, Jimmy Cliff, Darlene Love, Hall & Oates, Bonnie Raitt, Lou Reed, Reuben Blades, Bobby Womack, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Peter Garrett, Nona Hendrix, Bono!, Peter Gabriel, Clarence Clemons...and I just ran out of room!

  • Ha, Silvio at 1:07. Now I think of him more as an actor.

  • The mirror-opposite of such "touchy feely" songs from the same period like "We Are the World". Thanks to Jonathan Demme, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme for directing and editing this.

  • Pena que ninguém desse pessoal foi lembrado para participar da show de abertura da Copa 2010.

  • the ignorance of libs...wow.

  • @AlchemicGnosis Die deeler is so goed soos die steeler.

  • Since 1994 the number of white farmers and their families murdered in South Africa is conservatively put at around 1 000. It may very well be much higher. There are currently an estimated 40 000 commercial farmers in the country. Over this same period in the region 250 000 South Africans out of a total current population of approximately 47 million have been murdered. (SAIRR)

  • @ttiger5050

for the last time...BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN IS NOT JEWISH

and little steven is not a fag. only in the closti fags call others fags

  • @ttiger5050

You know how hard it is to get people together to do something like this? You want to bring light to conflicts, why dont you write a song yourself?

  • Comment removed

  • @2pacbiggie4334 bruce is not a jew but adam sandlers mother wishes he was( variation of a verse in his chahannukah song)

  • Hey! Wonder where all of these artists are now that 250 000 people has been murdered under the new SA government.

You sing: "We're hear to talk about SA"

Maybe you shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about. Its all false propaganda. The blood of 250 000 people are on the hands of all the idiots singing here.

  • 1:05 the guy that plays Silvio Dante on The Sopranos lol

  • all this was fake, the same nations there bomb Iraq, Afganistan, Gaza.....for oil and land....they bombed Japan too, but that nobody wants to talk about anymore...

  • @riobab -- As you mix apples and oranges, I'll talk about it. Gladly will discuss how bombing Hiroshima & Nagasaki ultimately saved many more lives than would have been killed against a Japanese army prepared to continue the fight to a far more bitter end (you want to get into their treatment of the Chinese and other POWs in WWII, too?). Re. Afghanistan & Iraq, millions freed & can now vote, and if outside interests are truly there for oil, why hasn't price gone down? Can't have both ways.

  • @MitsahE1970 yes, lets get into the the japanese prison camps

and how after the war japan was kind of left alone because the US bargained that for the results of those dehumanising "medical" experiments.

just google unit 731 for the trueth. the US covered it all up.

  • Sun City hit number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in December 1985..... so it was a Top 40 record in the United States.

  • Good music has been KILLED by the MATRIX. They want great songs like this, that helped changed the world, DEAD. But the fans DO NOT support good music enough so more conscious musicians have to COMPROMISE. If more people supported good music, we could change the world.

  • Preach on, preach on.

  • some do. i don't listen to a lot of top 40. well, i'm 38, so i did kind of outgrow it. my son does, but he likes rap better. at least with rap, even if it is annoying, there is a point and an artist has actually create it. and yes some rap is dreck, but a lot does show originality. i do like a lot of indie music, and i admit a certain fondness for 80's new wave, nostagia i guess.

  • tjenk71. Thanks for your pity asshole, but we don't need it. Roll the bill up and shove it up your ass, at least then you'd feel like a million bucks. I'm a christian but your views on islam belong in the dark ages. Did you even pass kindergarten?

  • Band-Aid, USA for Africa, Live-AID and Artists United Against Apartheid were great coming-togethers of artists from Motown to rock to punk/new wave, funk, soul and disco to raise money and awareness about the crises of the African continent. I am SO glad I was in high school during 1982-1986 and saw all of this first hand and the great impact it made. Thanks for posting.

  • @ttiger5050 Kinda like when the whites were let out of THEIR cages and did what they did in Rosewood, Florida back in the early 1900s to unarmed, defenseless blacks. Spare me, please. The white race has unleashed untold amounts of destruction upon other people and races. Trail of Tears, asshat?

  • @latinguy67 -- Civil War & Emancipation Proclamation which freed slaves? Suppose I shouldn't forget to mention Democrat-supported Jim Crow laws and a Democrat-founded Ku Klux Klan the left always tries to slough off on the right. Civil Rights Act of 1964 also ratified by 93% Republicans vs. 60% Democrats. No name-calling from me, either. Just the facts.

  • @MitsahE1970 a bigot is a bigot...republican, democrat....

  • @latinguy67 It was even better to be in college (the University of South Florida, for me) during this time period -- especially when it came to the question of whether the institutions of the universities should divest funds to and from South Africa that were going to prop up the Apartheid regime there (that and the anti-nuclear & the protests against what the U.S. government doing in the Phillipines & Central Amerca at the time

  • @TheWhatsinaname interesting and great protests, probably not seen on college campuses since the Vietnam War). I myself was involved in at least four or five protests at USF -- and at least two of those were about the divestment issue -- which luckilly before I graduated USF in 1987, both USF and the U.S. Congress (voted, with President Reagan had to sign in mid-1986) both divested funds. And I when Nelson Mandela was

  • @TheWhatsinaname That last beginning of a sentence should read: And when Nelson Mandela was released, I myself felt I was a part of history and larger world (even though I've never met him or been to South Africa) like I don't think I ever felt before (as a History major that's something that makes you quite proud).

  • @latinguy67

I agree. I wish I was born in the period. My generation is just careless

  • Didn't after Apartheid ended, the tribes in Africa started slaughtering each other, and the beautiful farms that existed were lotted and destroyed?

  • No. Go read some history.

  • Hey nicobeth,I appreciate your reply.I do know that the white farmers were killed and their animals were slaughtered and now it is a mess.

  • sadly, violence engenders more violence, but hopefully support engenders more support, too

  • You are so right! Our whole world needs prayer.

  • I remember this from the 80s. A worthy cause---and a great video. Image the so-called music "stars" doing something like this today.

  • @sneezepal Word!!!!!

  • HAHAHA, LOL at Bono! <3

  • bono is da best :)

  • Queen were against apartheid! They said this many times. They did an error when they went there in 1984. In fact Queen + Paul Rodgers were at the concert for Nelson Mandela's 90's Birthday.

  • and i don't think any of them ever did
