  • I like John Ricard's video because their live and realistic - not a lot of fluf.

But it is funny what the other commentors have said about how this should be a strap video - ha ha. Nonetheless, I waiting to shoot with my D3x for the right application such as large and wide shots like massive groups or other full spectrum imaging.

I'm actually going to be cleaning my D3s's sensor tonight, wish me luck - using visible light's kit.

  • @mikesmultimedia Actually, one thing I like best with D3x files is that they are great fro retouching. The extra pixels makes it much easier to remove pimples or blemishes. If the D800 rumors are true, then that camera will be a really nice lower priced alternative to the D3x.

  • @photoJohnRicard Just did a quick search for specs on the rumored D800 see Nikonrumors . com Makes me question the need for the D3x with those suggested specs (36MP). I've been stuck in Iraq for a year deployment so I've got some research to do. I did alot of hikey background replacement out there for portraits of soldiers and more detail around the hair was needed for clean masks. So if D800 will be 36Mp Hmmm? John - Maybe you could do some D3 vs D3x comparisons and uses.

  • I like the wider strap, black and Nikon yellow looks good and I take the Nikon D3S on the strap as simple advertisement. its good.

  • I think you need to re-title the video to: 'What strap should I use with my camera'

  • Should add "Straps comparison" in the title too. Way too much talking about your straps.

  • thumps up if u repeat 8:52 ten thousand

to know her name and her myspace hahaha ! <"/

  • that camera has got the same price for my college tuition

  • Your a bit cynical, don't you think. Not all of us have the budgets to buy a D3x any day of the year. For the rest of us, all the stuff that comes with that camera is all we can afford after buying the equalvency of a car...

  • 8:46 LOL the guy is stupid enough to stand in the light himself

  • @channly Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm not stupid. I can stand in front of a 72" Octabank without causing any problems. In fact, I explained the principle in a video titled, "Shooting With an Elinchrom Octabank". I can't link to the video in this comment section but if you search You Tube for, "Shooting With an Elinchrom Octabank John Ricard" you should be able to find the video.

  • Not to rain on your parade, but I just bought the Black Rapid strap, and it's the best on the market!

  • I think people use the straps with the brand name on it because it's what comes with it. It's more pretentious to to have pretensions about straps. lol

  • Want a good strap? Get a Black Rapid.

  • @bimse111 Not a fan of the way the large strap crosses your chest. Its too noticeable for my tastes. Also, the fast access it provides to the camera just isn't necessary for me. On one of their videos they show a guy on a motorcycle using the strap -again, that just doesn't apply to my shooting style. I've got all day to reach for my camera...

  • Shows how far we've come...When I bought my F-1 back in '86, it was the camera body, instruction manual and warranty card...that was it.

  • sir accualy in it's up to 15000 $ in Kuwait, thats so bad

  • @UprightBassAddict If you have some photographic ability, you should do what I have done -share the knowledge. I have uploaded more than 100 informative videos while you have uploaded none. Why not share your knowledge of photography with others? And when you do so, please have the balls to use your real name and not hide behind a fake name.

  • LOL not about the video but regardless or not you're american, it's pronounced NEE-KON!!!

    ontopic; gahh i want this

  • It's Nee-kon!

  • @IsaacMaganaMusic thank you!

  • Wish I had a D3x to brag about :-)

  • it would be funny as hell if the Model tripped and broke both cameras

  • I will have Louis Vitton strap on my point & shoot camera

    LOL

  • If u had a d3x why the hell wouldnt u want to show it off

  • @halo3guyy So you don't get it stolen!

  • @halo3guyy hell yea if i had a d3x id want to show that sh* off.. oh what you shoot with what a canon 5d mark 2 oh ha ha oh hold my cup of tea for me for a second let whip out my 8,000 dollar d3x

  • I would have slapped that bitch for banging the cameras together

  • @DiegoMenendez I agree, dont bang camera equipment!

  • expensive camera, expensive light modifier, alright model but shit picture

  • @beef7790 I guess it goes to show that an expensive camera doesn't help you take better pictures.

  • @beef7790 too true...neither does a douchey neckstrap.

  • @beef7790 well obviously this guy makes money off these pictures so I think he takes great pictures

  • @RoRcrashslave So his pictures are great because he makes money off them?

  • @beef7790 No Im saying that if he had bad pictures or bad equipment he would not have a living off of it.

  • @biped19 That isn't what I am saying at all. What I am saying is I dislike the look and feel of the Nikon camera strap that I can't believe so many pros and amateurs use it. The strap isn't "innocuous" at all to me. Because the Nikon strap hangs so high and is so uncomfortable to me, it pretty much ruins my shooting experience. I've made the point in several videos, that really "minor" things can have a major impact on the shooting experience.

  • He's using the Nikon strap when he starts shooting the model!

  • @dudethatreads4fun I never actually noticed that before. That's pretty funny, I must admit...

  • i am a little disappointed with the nikon straps saying what kind model it is. it just seems unnecessary and leaves some room for douche bags to judge you because of the model and for them to show off their "better" nikon. i wish it only said "nikon" on all of them

  • damn, why is this guy going in on the nikon neck strap?

  • Or you could buy a D3x strap for your D40. lol.

  • i envy you

  • I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed the droning on about a strap on a "review" about the D3x. Good thing for fast forward!

  • Debbie is a babe

  • Hi John,

Where did you purchase the donkey swivel strap?

Looks good i really want to get one

    cheers

  • @disruptfam Its a DOMKE 1" CAMERA STRAP W/SWIVEL available from B&H Photo.

  • Wow thanks about telling us about the camera srap whew! I feel better now

  • wow half this review is about straps...amazing

  • Lol I was only looking at the model

  • 8.000 DOLLARS?

  • I would rather wear a gaudy neckstrap than drop the camera...

  • I LOVE DEBBIE!

  • so ive been a photographer for about a year and starting to get more serious....actually shooting events, better gear and image retouching after taking the pictures...so ive been wondering about the best software to upload the files to your computer. if anyone has a suggestion its much appreciated.

  • @TotalBizcut You don't actually need software just to transfer images. If you want to pick the good shots from the bad and put them into different folders, I use Photo Mechanic. It's an old program, but it is very efficient at organizing and selecting and renaming thousands of images.

Today, many people use Lightroom or Aperture to do these tasks. Lightroom and Aperture can even be used to adjust images similar to the way Photoshop does.

  • hehehehe..what a strap...:)

  • I was wondering if you had ever made comparisons on images with the D3 and D3x or had taken both on a shoot and is the D3x that much more superior?

  • @lg123xyz You can instantly see the difference between a D3 and D3x shot. They eye detail on the D3x is incredible. I also like being able to shoot at ISO 100 on the D3x instead of 200 on the D3. I use D3x for all my studio images and any images that I am lighting myself.

That said, I don't "need" a D3x. Commercial shooter Chase Jarvis uses the D3 on many advertising jobs. If the D3 is good enough for him, it's in fact good enough for me and you.

  • @photoJohnRicard Yes I suppose you're right, its not so much the tool but the artist who's using it. Thanks for the great videos!

  • you know some people don't really care about straps so they just say it's just a strap that carries the camera, all they care about is taking pictures, mine is written Nikon on it only

  • Swivel the camera, swivel the camera, swivel the camera, where she stops nobody knows. Oi.

  • Nikon D3x unboxing and Model Shoot and CAMERA STRAP!!!

  • i dont like this guy

  • a camera strap is a camera strap its used to carry your camera around your neck, not for fashion

    this girl is amazing though..

  • @BurninC4rtrage I tend to buy the equipment that I want rather than the equipment that I need. As long as you are aware of the difference between those 2 things, you can't go wrong when you buy gear. Also, the money I spend on cameras is still less than what most people spend on their car and car insurance. I chose to put the money into a nice camera rather than a nice car -but again, that's just my personal choice.

  • this guy is really critical. i mean, complaining about a camera strap...really?

  • @aerosoladdiction Call me crazy but the camera strap has more impact on my day to day shooting than many of the features that the camera offers including: Max frames in continous release, Exposure delay mode, multi selector meter off, Easy exposure compensation, Fine tune optimal exposure, Dust off reference photo, Image authentication, Vignette control, Long exposure noise reduction and Print Set.

  • yeah..agree with you about the strap(:

  • did someone just got an electric shock @ 3:50?? XD

  • @LoveHateFashion That is the wireless mic picking up static.

  • @LoveHateFashion xaxaxaxaxaxaxaxa

  • the logo uses up 15% of your video space and is INCREDIBLY distracting.

  • @kiwibiwi My newer videos have either no logo at all, or a logo that shows up for only about 30 seconds.

  • @photoJohnRicard Great to hear, I will check em out in that case :)

  • I like the model :-) (Debbie)

    never mind the camera

    she is more interesting!!

she is always welcome to my place

I am sure we can have lot of shoots (any kind)

  • Great unboxing video John.

I'm interested in the Domke strap but does it dig in your shoulders after a while? I usually carry my camera (5D mark II + 35L) all day long and I was looking for something like this but the strap having a narrower surface does make me wonder if it's going to hurt my shoulders or not after a while. Does the narrower strap make the camera feel any heavier? or does it not really make any difference? Thanks for your help! Looking forward to more vids from you!

  • @JD95 I often shoot on music video sets for 10+ hours and the strap doesn't bother me at all. There is also a wider version of the Domke strap, btw.

It is interesting to note that Getty images now uses Nikon D3s cameras for all their staffers. These cameras are outfitted with the same Domke strap I talk about in this video, except the strap says, "NPS Nikon Professional Servies" in white. I assume Nikon is supplying a custom Domke strap along with the cameras.

  • @photoJohnRicard

wow, thanks for the quick reply. The strap sounds really good. I don't know where I could get them here in Japan but I'm sure I'll find one and get one. The NPS strap got to look really nice. I've recently played around with the D3s and man, that is a great camera. I know it's not the gear that makes a good photo and I love my 5D2 but the camera in my christmas wish list is the D3s:) Thanks again for your help.

  • weird how most of this video is actually about camera straps

  • is doing unboxing videos like this, not showing off? and saying stuff like, "i thought it was expensive but i bought it anyway". isn't that showing off?

  • if I'd have a digital camera I'd listen to what this guy says!!!

  • damn.. your right... most people using these straps just for showing off....

  • omg your shoots are terrible :)

  • You should post videos showing how to shoot the right way. I'm always looking to learn.

  • i wish you could get rid that massive watermark from the video

  • hi john,

what do you think about the "low1" setting in nikon cameras? in your d3x it is equivalent to iso50. is that an option for you? in my camera (d700) it's iso 100. i know the amount of grain is minimized, but some people say the image quality doesn't improve compared to the normal iso 100 setting in the d700.

  • I've never actually used the setting. I don't find it necessary. You'd have to be in a really really bright situation to actually need ISO 50. It's just not something I encounter.

I can say however that the HI ISO settings (the ones above 1600) aren't very good compared to the D3.

  • nobody needed to see a man opening a box.

  • I agree the concept is rather silly, but I have watched a lot of these unboxing videos myself and that is what inspired me to make one of my own.

  • I love unboxing videos and this one is great, it's the closest I'll get to opening a D3X box anyway lol.

  • YES! Domke straps are the best! I have three of them

  • Cmon! complaining about the strap! thats your saviour!

  • But... what about the strap?

  • i dont get it the video says its about a nikon d3x unboxing not about straps

  • straps are to keep your camera safe. nikon puts their brand on it to advertise, as would any other intelligent company

  • I use a strap cas i cant afford to drop my camera

  • Oh good job captain obvious. You understand what straps are meant for. Good job.

  • AHAHAH!!! This is the most hilarious answer i have ever read!

  • Nice camera only thing I didn't like was saying or implying that everyone who uses the straps is doing it for show off purposes... And what if someones proud as you said a D40? I don't see anything wrong with being proud of something whether it be A 400 dollar camera or an 8000 dollar camera... Makin ppl feel bad cause they have a lower budget cam isn't good I think if you are happy with what you have then be proud.

  • I buy a lot of "lower budget" stuff. I wear cheap sneakers and I drive a 2001 Honda. The only thing I spend a lot of money on is photo gear. I'm not a brand snob and I don't look down on people for buying cheap products.

But to me, wearing a "Nikon D40" strap would be like me wearing a Honda 2001 Accord t-shirt. I'm proud of my car, but I just can't see telling the world on my t-shirt that I drive a cheap car.

  • Lol yeah I understand that, I'm not trying to argue or anything like that just stating what I thought when I watched the video & how it came out to me. But as it goes though long as your content with what you have other peoples opinions should count.

    Anyways Nice camera man

  • You can´t show off with D40 strap for one reason - there´s only "Nikon" logo on it so that others don´t see whether you use a D40 or D90. Explained with other words, the "Nikon" part of the Nikon D3X strap is not important, it´s the D3X part that´s important and that´s the reason why it has it written there, unlike D40

  • he's a pro. he's bored with all those expensive cameras, just tools in fact. Not expensive toys some day dream about.

For this reason, the strap is more important for him. it gives him the comfort he needs during long hours of shots

  • That's mostly correct, but I have to admit I still get really excited by acquiring new gear. I'm looking forward to a D3s and a Leica M9 at some point in the future. I don't expect either to really put more money in my pocket, but I want both.

  • yeah, I know... :)

I just purchased my first " studio kit", and I couldn't sleep for 2 nights. It's amazing how much two umbrellas can do to your shots. I guess I'm the lucky bastard enjoying his purchase.

    BTW, that Elinchrom looks amasing!

  • i dont agree_

    -

  • I don't have any idea of what you are talking about. You should be more specific.

  • @photoJohnRicard you tell him!!!!!!! hahahahhaha

  • well the is nikon d3x unboxing i just wanted

to see some unboxing of of the camera

    not only about the strap_

  • I disagree with everyting you just said and did :)

  • Maybe somebody is a Canon fan?

  • LOL! Wearing the strap doesn't mean your showing off you expensive camera, they made the strap so when the camera slips of the photographers hand, it won't fall and break.

  • Lol most of the video is about the straps haha. good video though :)

  • haha set your camera right...man

  • What does that mean?

  • I'm not really qualified to do technical reviews of equipment. I'm far more qualified to tell you what strap works best ;)

  • "Looks like you're showing off and bragging by using the stock strap." "And I can't see myself doing that." But anyway, I thought I'd do this very important and humble 'unboxing' video that features ME with MY new expensive camera. Oh, it also shows shorty the sleezy model being photographed in completely random light.

  • cringe when the model hit he cameras together

  • really it's just a neck strap and the nikon d40 neck strap only says nikon so it's hard to brag...

  • he said Nikon D40x which does have the "D40x" on the strap.

  • Comment removed

  • neck strap - bad?

    swivel?

    longer by 2 inches?

narrow "donkey strap" with havier lens will give you a nice neck pain with a nice red stripe on your neck when u take it off. really retarded reasons to diss nikon straps.

its a personal preference... don't diss something else just cuz its personal preference.

  • I basically gave my opinion of the strap. I pointed out that I am in the minority for not liking it. I pointed out that both amateurs as well as pros seem to love the strap. I'm just saying I don't personally like it.

When I read or watch a review of a product, I like to hear the honest opinion of the reviewer -even if it goes against popular opinion. That's all I was trying to do in my review.

BTW, the strap I was referring to is a Domke Gripper strap with swivel quick release.

  • i want an slr so bad. right now i have a fujifilm s2000 haha but i think i'm gonna get a d3000.

    check out my flickr :)

    flickr (dot) com/photos/jaaakeeeee

  • Love that John Ricard got the voice of a godfather!

    Cheers, good vid.

  • "I thought it was expensive, but i bought it"

  • lmao

  • esta de la verga de cara!!!... me kedo con mi D80!!! ;)

  • Thats why entry level Nikon DSLR straps just say "Nikon".

  • LOL!!

    n-IY-kon

  • yea i once saw this kid..he uses a D3X neck strap but it turns out his camera was a D60,..how pathetic was that

  • lol

  • hahahah EPIC FAIL

  • like your video johnricard. i would like to add a catagory to your 'silly list": amateur hacks with any camera costing over $2000. i'm a member of the press and there is nothing more frustrating to see a parent or john q citizen showing up to events with cameras more expensive than the pros (me) have. we (pros) are paid to be there and have the training to capture the shots that tell stories. hacks should keep to snapshooting around the house or garden.

  • I don't mind amateurs in the pit if they shoot "correctly". But most of the time the amateurs are leaning in close to the performer for no reason at all. The amatuers tend to move around in the pit a lot while the pros more sit back and wait for the right shot. And if the amatuers are using point and shoot cameras that have LCD screens ont the back, they tend to hold those cameras over their head to shoot and they block other photographers from working.

  • you gotta practice to get good.. so you cant automatically hate those people... the hacks are the ones who shoot auto

  • very much agree about spreading the focus points out more. From the d300 to the d3 they are the same size... i hoped they would be a bit wider.

  • My one problem with this video is the giant web address on the bottom of the video that never goes away.

  • devi is so hot my god ... damn

  • Her name is Debbie Park and she works with a NYC agency called Artistic Curves. Thanks for watching.

  • i was trying to see the camera look the details but debbie was in the middle im not a pro photographer im an attorney and i get some money in the night by taking pictures got a canon 50d was wondering if i buy the d3x camera and get broken what i can do? where i can go?

  • I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. But if you do night photography, the D3x may not be the best choice for you. A Canon 5d or a Nikon D3 might be better choices for night photography.

  • thank u i already add u on my contact list

  • I was wondering why my Nikon D3x came with no LCD plastic protector.. I mean for $ 8,000 usd it means I should buy it, as an accesory? the one in the video doesnt have one either right?

  • It's supposed to have something called "tempered glass" that is scratch resistant.

  • is this a camera review or a strap review video?

  • I wish I were qualified to do an actual camera "review". My video is pretty much me just taking it out of the box, lol.

Straps on the other hand, are very easy to review...

  • hmm. i dont really think the "swivel" factor of the straps is important. To me, it wouldnt really matter! If i had a top of the line camera like the d3x i definatly would'nt be worried about swiveling straps.

  • Comment removed

  • oh lord my heart skipped a beat when she hit the cameras together -.-

  • Mine too!

  • Mine too! heheheh

  • tht model has a tit job no doubt

  • Nice video, but I stopped listening when you brought in that girl.

  • I bet straps aren't the only thing you like to be long. jk

  • Sometimes its the 'little' things that make work 'pop'. I switched straps and its all good. My old strap would do the 'twister' around my neck. Not good. The new one is the best. Thanks again!

  • The D40 is great camera.

  • Yeah he bashed every photographer who doesn't have 8000 to spend on a camera...

  • yeah really

  • I didn't bash anyone in the video. I merely stated that in my opinion it looks silly to have a strap that proclaims "Nikon D40". I then stated that it looks EQUALLY silly to have one that says "Nikon D3x". My comment was more about the strap than the camera or camera user.

  • i think you make a good point, that the strap is a bit funny with the make and model on there. I guess it's just asking to be mugged with that in the open, but as far as width, length and the "swivel" issue, i find my D90 strap quite comfortable really, even when shooting for hours at a time and never taking it off.

  • Plus the D90 Strap Doesn't say D90 Only Nikon ;) i like my D90 strap but i prefer it little bit longer but over all happy with it

  • thxs for telling us your favorite camera strap. Now I look like a total pro with my D40. When I go to art agencies, I proudly show them my domke strap and tell them this is what John Ricard uses and you know what, it has opened many doors for me and career

Tnxs Dude, You Da Man !

  • Well, if you happen to have 2 D40s, just make sure you don't bang them together like the model does in this video.

    Thank you for watching :)

  • what's the name of it? i want one! i've googled on "donkey swivel gripper" with no results :(

  • Try "Domke Gripper Camera Strap 1" with Swivel Quick Release - Black". Thanks for watching the video.

  • I was thinking the same thing (she's hot as hell by the way).

  • while there are 2 slots in the battery charger, you cannot charge 2 batteries at the same time ( as you stated)...one will be "waiting" until the other is done...nice vid though...where do you buy your donkey strap?

  • I don't understand why people just internet attack people. I guess they just cant stand people doing good!! John Ricard is a very talented photographer and one first pros to have the d3x. We should congratulate him rather than criticize.

  • is it stupid to have a strap to have just nikon??

ha i have a d80 cuz that what i could buy, and im 18 so its a good camera for me.

but i agree with that strap comment

it annoys me, as if ther trying to show off.

  • awesome camera, incredible girl

I prefer the second option lol

  • first 1 :PPP

  • wow that´s my dream camera right there !!! D3X 24MP 8,000 $.. I really envy you.. cause I have a D300 and I´m still paying for it , and photographer like you can afford it and let the camera pays for it self.

  • you're a moron..

  • lol, oh gosh.. cant stop laughing..

  • Very nice camera and a nice video! By the way, I have a Nikon D60(Amateur)...I'm trying to figure something out here. I wanted to know if this will work, I know the SB800 Flash can trigger the SB600. So if I buy one pocketwizard, will I be able to trigger both the SB800 and SB600? Thanks in advance;)
