Once the unit is upright (which I imagine it is by now), won't gravity pull the router down and effectively eliminate the backlash?

Not bad but look at the parts used linear bearings hardened shafts etc should have less backlash than that with those parts.

yep, it is the soft wooden parts that make the backlash
i plan to replace those with harder wood or MDF
