I was diagnosed with PDD-NOS about 2 or so years ago. I am 47 now. I also have bi-polar II and ADHD. When I was about 8 or 9 I took kung-fu for a short while. Currently, I am a graduado in capoeira, which I have been studying for 17 years. Yes, there has to be the right instructor. I grew up in school band as well and did a whole lot better when we moved and we had a nicer and more understanding band director. There is something to getting in touch and inside one's body.
I have PDD-POS, and I highly recommended sports as a way to build up confidence. I do boxing and I love it.
I first started off doing Taekwondo but left due to a severe knee injury. That kid is lucky to have an enthusiastic teacher, unfortunately teachers like that are hard to come by.
I hope that kid is still doing it and enjoying it.
My 5 year old son has PDD-NOS and just started Tae Kwon Do this week. He loves it! Most of the other students are also on the spectrum - Martial Arts is great for them!! Thanks for posting!
Wow, I totally know how this feels. XD;; It's like the teacher's doing one thing.. but.. your body.. won't.. do it. XD XD;;; Kind of like when you're doing your hair in a double-reflected mirror and trying to figure out which direction to move. (Hopefully other people have trouble with that too and it's not just me...;; )
i think this teacher is too uderstanding for him. i think he confuses pdd-nos with Asperger Syndrome they have almost no learning ability. pddnos intead is very highfunctioning and intelligent. They have little problems with reasoning and focussing. Some asperger i know can only do things in the same way if one factor changes they cannot understand anything anymore
i have pdd-nos and mcdd, it doesnt mean that you dont understand anything. i do understand what people say what to do, but maybe its different with every pdd-nos patient. my problem with pdd-nos is that i am living in my own world and that when i cant socialize i go to my dreamworld and i dont understand anyone and they dont understand me and that hurts me alot..
I have an 8 year old with PDD NOS. He's been taking karate for a year. Martial arts have done so much for his focus and his self esteem. His PT and OT also think it's a great ideo to work on balance, trunk strength and stability. Maybe someone should do a study on the benefits of martial arts for certain kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
whoops, meant to say what *a lot*... he learns (last comment). Anyway, it is in the posautive youtube group now, and in both its /kids and its /sense subgroups.

Lovely! what he learns in this short time :)
I reckon Tae Kwon Do would suit a high proportion of autistic kids - useful too, great against bullying as my own son found out.
