the writing in this scene is so well-handled...the way it comes so close to being sentimental then dips back into comedy. probably my favorite ab fab scene.
who ever put these ab fab episodes on here I'd like to say a big thanks x But so many are missing- if you go on Wikipedia-look at the list of ab fab episodes. Could you put the rest on please...I'll be yr best friend....maybe? lol x I would put them on myself-but I'm too stupid!!!
Danny Burstein as Martin is so funny! I love the Strand bookstore too , went to New York myself , but was devastated when didnt have time to visit it, when I asked Dad.
Thanks, I'd read about this but never seen it. My first job in NY was at the Strand but I said no and took a job uptown selling Italian shoes because there was a commission. Wow, did I learn to lie! "They look gorgeous on you!" New York, New York! Thanks so much for posting. (Miriam Linna worked downstairs at Patti Smith's old desk and used to steal the postage stamps for her zines, ha ha!)
I luv luv luv this show!!! Just found out it's gonna b on Logo-can't wait 2 c it again. Anybody know if you can buy t-shirts with the name of the show on it?
This show was funny for three brief seasons in the early 90s when Ruby Wax was writing and editing it. Then it became one of the most godawful pieces of suckage ever. This episode exemplifies how truly, truly unfunny and awful this once-good show became. Shockingly unfunny. Saunders was clueless when it came to reviving this idea.
@Vengeance509 what??? Are you trying to gauge a reaction or are you being serious? If you are being serious then i am in shock! How can you not find this funny? Obviously, and unfortunately, a lot of people agree with me when I say that this remains bloody hilarious. I know everyone is entitled to freedom of speech, but that is just ridiculous! Ha
@Donlar89 No. AbFab ~used~ to be genuinely witty, and then it became a lame parody of itself after third season. It's sad that the ability of humans to distinguish between cake and shit has diminished so rapidly in recent years.
I think the United Nations could take a powerful "first step" to combat the world's ills by urging the mandatory sterilization of all British people. The time has arrived.
@Vengeance509 Seeming as you are in the minority, has it not occurred to you that it is infact you who is in the wrong? Or is that too awful to contemplate? Plenty of people hugely enjoy Absolutely Fabulous, every series of it, and I don't think we can all be wrong... really?? Such a shame.
@Donlar89 Believe me--I'm ~proud~ to be in the minority, especially when the rest of the world is as vapid, tasteless, and moronic as you. The point is/was: you wouldn't know quality comedy if it squirted on your shellacked homo-forehead (and I do take the liberty of assuming that your life is indeed one tawdry chain of low-level squirts after another).
Basically, you are a shatteringly, shockingly ridiculous moron.
@Vengeance509: It's a rare comedy beast indeed that doesn't succumb to a loss of momentum in the end. 'Faulty Towers' & 'Frasier' are notable exceptions. The former to a greater extent by virtue of it's sheer brevity, the latter less so but considering it spanned 11 years the quality control was something of a miracle. Yes Ab-Fab's best day's were also it's earliest, but again, it's a long running show and so is bound to falter in places the longer it goes.
@Aueneye Good grief ... someone with some sense, at last. The show was positively classic for the first three seasons when the writing was tight and the satire was spot-on. But Saunders gets NO kudos for dragging such a dead horse around and ruining the whole concept. And Fawlty never became as cripplingly horrid as post-1994 AbFab.
I mean, even The Last Shout (1996) sucked massive amounts of diseased dick.
@Aueneye You are so right! The thing with Ab Fab is that it took that break. So the public had some time away with it so when it came back in 2001, the writing felt fresh and new. This is a technique that many American producers wished they used on long running shows. American producers are also fond of the six episode season. It makes people want more, so even though it is a long running show it is a long running British show which usually don't falter near the end, but that is what they think.
@Vengeance509 : As for your anti-British sentiment, you might like to ponder the fact that although American comedy is admittedly very good, the contrast in manpower between the scores of writers hired for the majority of American network comedy shows and the two or three, and very often single person scripted shows in the UK is staggering.
As for your last incisive observation. I hope you appreciate the irony of an American talking about combating 'the world's ills'. Now that is comedy gold.
@Aueneye Oh, please, you piece of pissy old kidney pie! Seriously, though .. I do not utterly despise Brits. Most of you I adore. I merely abhor your uber-neurotic cesspit culture, which we, as Americans, are currently duplicating. Some of my best friends are British. One of them is actually funny.
@Vengeance509 : Heh, 'pissy old kidney pie'?! That actually made me smile.;)
Well good, glad to hear it. We're very fond of most of you Yanks also, but likewise we despise your narcissistic, shallow, vapid, vacuous and insincere petri-dish of a culture.;)
@Vengeance509 It may be true that it declined in quality, but no need for your pathetic jibe at British people, you complete and utter twat. Ab Fab wouldn't even have existed to start with without them.
What's the song that plays when she's looking for Serge in the bookstore? Much thx to whoever replies xD

I know this is filmed in the UK, because when Eddie says: "He works at The Strand--is that a club, darling?", nobody laughs.
There are pig farmers in Arkansas that know the Strand is a bookstore.

Nah, whether gay or straight you still have to fill out the application papers and have blood work done prior to getting married anywhere in the USA.

@Babyhowdy233
you do have to have paperwork, but blood work is not required.
