There was a film clip of two A-20s flying over a Japanese harbor when one of them is shot down and crashes into the water. I have not seen this video in a long time.
@TheJapaneseCars There is a very nice WWII British flick out on DVD called "The Way To The Stars", aka "Johnny In The Clouds", which has a few minutes of Havocs. It's a great movie, one of the under-rated ones if you ask me.
@TheIan37 Wrong. The Douglas Havoc/Boston was a light attack aircraft that could also drop bombs as well as strafe, hence the "A" for "Attack". The Martin Marauder, for example (B-26) was a medium bomber which could also strafe as needed, therefore the "B" for "Bomber".
my father was in one of the raids shown here. it shows 342 'Lorraine' Sqn. of the Free French Air Force setting out to attack a power station at Chevilly-Larue, near Paris, on the 3.10.43. the cliffs they depart over are near Beachy Head. on this raid my father was flying in the No. 1 aircraft of a section of 4, the No. 2 and 3 aircraft were shot down, he was 18 years old.
@ perfgeek-- Hey, my dad was in A-20s too, in Italy/Sicily and North Africa. His crew did 61 missions when they only had to do 25 in order to return stateside. He came close to meeting his end on several occasions, from the pictures I've seen of flak holes all around his nose cone (he was the bombadier). I'm lucky he made it huh?
It was used in the pacific to great effect as a straffing platform against Japanese airfields. So well was it at this role it was tried in the European theatre but German AA was much more acurate and this practice was stopped. Also the RAF Mosquito and the A-20 shared many of the same traits, at least until late in the war as the Mosquito was upgraded the A-20 was outdated by newer aircraft.
WWII was the proving ground for many twin engined fighters, bombers and commercial / military transports -- most of them failing to perform above the average of the day. One of the few exceptions was the Douglas Boston / A20 Havoc. It was more successful as a night fighter, intruder and ground attack. Unfortunately, it didn't have a general use it to attack an enemy homeland from a carrier.
a 20 actually was not all that good of a bomber.. it had a very light bomb load.. like around 2,000 lbs, and it didnt even have a fixed bomb sight, had to drop bombs completely by guessing.
Yes it did have a Fixed bomb sight well the A20C did and it carried up to a 8,000 lb bomb load and it was an excellent bomber whihc is why the RAF bought hundreds of them from the americans!
Great great clip, the music is intense just as the flying was.

From what i am told, the A-20 had the speed of most of the early fighter aircraft, hence the "A" in A-20.

@dooshee2 Amazing what 18 & 20 year olds were doing in that time frame, unlike todays tattooed, pierced, Red Bull & vodka swilling youth.
