MisterAnimalChin@ Yeah, you're right. that's Greg Leisz on lead guitar. I've seen him playing around L.A. a lot with people like Lucinda Williams. he's usually everyones "go to" guy for peddle steel (including Mathew Sweet). it's nice to see him standing for a change. this is a great performance of this song.
saw SH + MW perform at the Birchmere in VA last tour, and their duets were inspired. Susanna performed, by my husband's request, her stunning vocal cover of Dylan's I'll Keep in With Mine. Listen to it on YouTube. One of the best covers you'll ever hear. I just saw the Bangles last weekend from the front row, and all of the women looked and sounded amazing, especially Susanna. Any twenty something would kill for those legs! The band rocked. The new material is EXCITING! Loved it!!
The lead guitar is Richard Lloyd, former member of Television and one of the most underated guitarists on the planet...I'm sure Neil Young would be proud.
@MisterAnimalChin Actually, that's Greg Leisz; Another longtime Matthew Sweet cohort (he can most often be heard playing pedal steel). However, Richard Lloyd DID play on their album version! :)
She doesn't age! Matt looks "different" but he is still AWESOME!! He's an awesome writer, performer, producer. I used to work radio in Ottawa and a CD came across my desk of Matthew Sweet's called "Goodfriend" (not "Girlfriend) - it was full of acoustic versions and B sides. It was AWESOME. If anyone can find it - it's well worth it. It looks like someone traced the cover to "Girlfriend" on paper and then stuck it in a CD case.
sounds good, but i hate to say this. susanna looks amazing, and matthew looks terrible lol. i was watching the old girlfriend clip from dennis miller in like 93' matt looks young and in shape.
The Bangles are always the most exciting group out there!! They are unique like no other. A mix of great talents in one group...who needs anything more? I love them always!!
Matthew & Susanna are GREAT! But, the one note solo from original is sorely missed-it gave the song that time & space movement -just because there are 8 notes in a major scale-sometimes what you leave out is far more rewarding.
I've seen Matthew perform many times over the years, he continues to astonish anyone lucky enough to sit in his audience. A true virtuoso. Love the pairing with Susanna Hoffs. A real treat--thanks for posting!
Susanna Hoffs, hrmmm, well, I suspect the Replacements' "Left of the Dial" was written about the whole generation of 80s girl bands who would not have gotten signed without being pretty.
"Pretty girl keep growin' up, playin' with make-up, wearin' guitar"
So did they hook up from the Austin Powers movie? I Remeber seeing Matthew in Denver years ago, and he just slayed the place (soon after Sick of Myself). It does look like he gained a few Lbs since then, but man could he write a rocking pop song. And I would be remise if I did not state WOW Susanna, nicely done!
@HousleyMike Not only is he producing, he is also handling bass duties. The Bangles posted a podcast thingy not long ago that had clips of some of the new stuff and studio banter (check it out at their official site). You have to register to listen, but it's free and fast.
STRONG WORK: excellent cover... prefer the up-tempo and guitar riffs vs. other covers and slower version by Neil himself.... and if you can't have Neil singing, then a male-female harmony actually covers the great-one.
that's funny but I have always liked Mathew Sweet. Like Joe Jackson he maybe never became a pop superstar because he's not great looking. I like this version.
Why do you need 4 guitars and a bass on this version? Of course I always like to see Mrs Hoffs onstage, but really. Has ZZ Top ever covered this song?
The original solo was better for the simple fact that it was more melodic, and fit the spirit of the song nicely. This seemed very out of place, and felt like he was trying too hard to make the song his "own" when really he just came off as generic.

Why do all you people go on about Guitar Gods, technical boring twaddle and stance. Is is just so refreshing to see a female with a guitar. Also live Susanna doesn't intersting tghings with her instrument.
I saw the Bangles in NYC this past June, and I was up close...I can assure you that Susanna Hoffs, even though she's fifty, looks WAY BETTER than most of those Hollywood twentysomething wannabes. In fact, all three of the original gals...Susanna, Debbie, and Vickie...look INCREDIBLE!!! Not one of those women have the old ladie neck, and that the telling tale of age.
I went to Jr HIgh with Matt in Lincoln NE...and played in band with him and traded guitar licks occassionally...Still great to see he is making music. The dude had so much talent even way back then...knew he was going to play music as a living. I went east and he went west. I never got my record deal but he did......been following his career for years.
Like it better than Young's original. I have loved Susanna's voice for 25 years, but she simply gets better with age. Her eyes still get me hot! While Matthew Sweet does nothing for me, I still think "Under the Covers" are great compilations.
No, I get it just fine. I won't argue with Neil Young's songwriting ability, but he is a terrible guitar player and an even worse singer. Sloppy, dreadful, and self-indulgent in all respects. I think it's YOU that doesn't get it.
His emotion clearly outweighs his raw talent which is what makes him so great. His tone and style are unique, you always know when it's him playing or singing. How many technically proficient guitar players can you say that about?
I'd take a great songwriter with great feeling over a great player any day. But that's just me.
Neil Young has described his own guitar playing as "epileptic", so while he is a spectacular songwriter, he does better when someone else takes the lead.
Simply an awesome cover of a great song by 2 remarkable artists. I love how Susanna kicks it going into the lead break. Shes still hot, and can belt it better than ever. Sweet is...Sweet.
Now, that folks is what rock 'n' roll is all about. The selection of covers on both volumes of Under the Covers is perfect, buy them both, you won't be disappointed!
I can't believe Susana is 50. Matthew sounds great, and he actually looks like he's starting to shed some of the excess weight which is good for his health.
This was actually filmed a few years ago. That said, if you've seen any of the recent press photos from Under the Covers Vol. 2, he definitely has lost a lot of weight. He looks really good! And he's actually managing to pull off a killer mustache too.
One of my favorite Young songs, covered quite nicely. Just wondering where and when:)
