  • UR A FAG

  • i read that axolotls in the pet store are not axolotls but tiger salamander larvae. how can i tell the difference and if they are tiger salamander larvae how will i know theyre morphing?

  • Damn sooo fast! i can you see him??

  • Sorry, and when its fully on land for the first time, how big will he be and how long do they live under good care?

  • @MichaelAndJohnny

He will be the same size for a few months, or over a year. I have had my salamander for a year, and he hasn't grown much at all. But it is common for older tiger salamanders to grow up to 8-12 inches long.

Under good care, they can live a good 15-20 years. So if you have one now, prepare for a long time pet! I have even heard stories from people saying theirs lived 28+ years. Pretty amazing for such a small creature :).

  • When it gets older it starts to take on the appearance of a regular tiger salamander right? and when will i have to take it out of water and on to land?

  • @MichaelAndJohnny

Yes, they start to look more like a salamander, and the gills shrink and the fins begin to "dissolve" into the body. When you see your salamander changing, you slowly empty the water over the course of a few days to a week. You also add some above-water land, like safely piled rocks, some floating plastic that the salamander might climb, etc. After the gills are completely gone, or s/he only uses the land, you can move it from the water tank to a vivarium.

  • how long can they stay in the larvae stage? mainly what i'm actually asking is can you permanently keep them at this stage?

  • @xinfeQionx Most of the time, they stay in the larval form for three to five months, but rarely, you find a "larval adult". A fully developed, able to reproduce larva. This is quite rare, but I heard you can force them to do this, by changing the water somehow.

  • srry but that thing is yucky

  • I have just aquired what I thought was a mud puppie from my work that sells live bait. it got in with minnows on accident however it is winter here in north dakota so the lake is frozen so I've decided to take care of it untill spring comes. but after looking on the internet I think it is actually a larval tiger salamander. I was wondering how long till it starts changing and how soon do you need to get him a terrerium with land. how do you get yours that fat mine doesnt want to eat much.

  • It took my salamander 2weeks to complete metamorphosis. Most of the time it takes 3-5 months after hatching. Salamanders do not need to eat every day ( except when they are morphing). If yours is skinny, feed it around 5-6 times a week, then if it fattens up, feed it 3-4 times a week until metamorphosis. Heres what to look for if he is changing: gills shrinking, tail fins disappearing, face getting more "muscular". When reaching the adult phase, slowly (over the course of a week) drain water.

  • (more) When all his gills are absorbed into its body, and his tail is rounder and fins gone, add land such as a floating rock or layered stones. Keep only about 3-4 inches of water in the tank. Then when you are sure he is only using the land half of the tank, you can create a terrarium with a sunken in plastic pool. For the diet, he should have: crickets, roaches, worms, grubs, small lizards and occasionally a pinkie mouse. Thank you and hope all goes well with your new salamander!

  • theick312, You should probably ask a vet or a forum. It could be a fungus.Sorry I could not respond quicker. Here is a good forum: caudata(dot)com

  • About a few weeks after I first got him. Not sure how old he was. Usually 3-5 months after hatching.
