I think the song beautifully describes how identity is not limited by boundaries of nationality or origins, but a combined experience of the people that know you and the way you know yourself. Although I am sure it must be great to be Canadian, it doesn't half cover the poetic load of The Talented Hip, whom just as all of us, are mere mortals.
I came late to the Hip. I'm 33, and they were huge when I was in high school. I guess I was just too "cool" for them or something. Older and humbler, I'm slowly coming to understand what people saw (and continue to see) in them. Songs like this and Bobcaygeon are just heart-breakingly beautiful. I hope I get a chance to see them before we all get too old.
@Thrax1 check out gord downies solo stuff too then.. I love this man! Saw him live last fall. The best part of it was the concert was at the same spot where my friends and i would hang out to drink and listen to the hip when we were teens. It was as tho the night of the concert was the closing credits to an era for me. (im 32)
This was always my favourite song, but just this morning my little cousin of 6 years old passed away suddenly. Now I feel like I've never connected to this song like I do now. You never know what might happen..
@jerodirwin66 I agree it should be about the music and not nationality or image. However it's too bad that you see our country as a "label" and "just a border", because Canada is the best country in the world and more people in this country should be proud. It is a shame that you can't find or see the reasons to love this country. I personally am proud when one of our own make it in an industry that does not seem to welcome individuallity, especially ones with real talent not manufactured Beiber
It's timeless and will go down with other great's like the original Fiddler's Green, I'm a man you don't meet every day, If I Ever Leave This World Alive and the Humours of Tullah.
@rrtodd95 The Hip says the most beautiful song they ever wrote is "Flamenco". They said that once at a show years ago. I personally think Fiddlers Green is more beutifuller too!
My nephew had a heart transplant and died not long after. This was his favorite song! We played it at his funeral. It reminds me of him when I hear it .
@amysticsoul I am sorry for your loss. This song is so perfect,. I don't know if I could get through it at a funeral, even if it was a favorite. I lost a baby brother when I was 5 and still grieve. I'm 59 now. Bless you and your family!
this song will always have a place in my heart...my father plays this on his guitar and sings, and it really makes me realize that were so lucky...in every way
My Son's little parrot Jambeard was humanely euthanized on Sept 17/10. The last thing I asked the little guy was to please tell my Son, who died at 14 on Jan23/08, that I loved him.An hour later I heard this amazing song on the radio and got the refeference of a boy' passing. I got the title and that night played it over & over. Feeling a deep connection, I went toa lyrics site where an ad had a little parrot fly across the lyrics to Fiddlers Green and knew Little Jambeard found his way there

When TTH came to St.John's Newfoundland, Gord said he wrote this song in Port aux Basques and it was the second best song he's ever written. The place went up
There is a poem called Fiddlers Green that we recited almost daily when I was in the Army. This is a beautiful song and in a different kind of way it reminds me of the days I spent in the service and reciting that poem. This song makes me tear up...
this song reminds me of my life in hamilton ont, there's a road called fiddler's green. Having been in alberta for sometime now, i miss it alot thanks boys...viva la hip
last week i heard this song on my ipod and the lyrics reminded me of my ex wife and my son. september 17 (my sons bithday) for a girl i know its mothers day (she gave bith to my son that dat) she left us 12 years ago she chose drugs over us thursday i had to tell my son that his mother took her life. the hardest thing i ever did. the song now gives me goosebumps. i think ill ask if they will play it at her wake.
@elmarco777 I am currently playing the song to my daughter for the first time, whose birthday is shared with your son, Sept. 17. She'll be 5. I'll think of you, your son and his mother that day. My best to you.
@MadHabber93 My son turn 20 on sept 17, he has grown into a fine youg man, even though hes was almost 20 when she die it didnt make it any easier. suicide is a selfish act, she left us to clean up her mess. thank you for your kind words and im sure that ill think of you and daughter on that day also.
@from18tillidie It has been a farovite of mine for many, many years. I'm not Canadian. I have sent it to others hoping to turn them on to the Hip. this is an all time GREAT song! Perfect poetry, allusions, and melody. Also, so sad. Vocals fit perfectly. They ARE the group-!!!

@hellaweaknodoubt I tottally do, My aunt and unccle live out there and we drove from Winnipeg to see them when i was younger and i was like, "FVCK YEAH"
fiddlers green is where the dead cav scouts go on the trail to hell Halfway down the trail to Hell, In a shady meadow green Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped, Near a good old-time canteen. And this eternal resting place Is known as Fiddlers' Green. Marching past, straight through to Hell The Infantry are seen. Accompanied by the Engineers, Artillery and Marines, For none but the shades of Cavalrymen Dismount at Fiddlers' Green. this is not all but look up cav scout fiddlers green
I just enjoyed the peaceful feel of the song and enjoy the rockin' numbers as well, the lyrics are often abstract in my mind. Nice to get clarification on them via YT
The song is about a young boy that dies. I think the impetus for Gord Downey to write the song may have been linked to the death of his sister's first child. Fiddler's green is, I think, a mythical place that sailors go to when they die, but the young boy will go there, and be cared for by said sailors. The last verse especially tells the story of the boy.
Ive had four chances to see them in my hometown through the past four or five years, and ive never been able to dish out the money to see them. I hope one day in the near future before they turn old & gray I will be able to see them when they can still through entertaining concerts
This is litrerally one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my entire life. The Tragically Hip songs have one of the most soothing and peaceful sounds of the music industry ( that I have heard) Truly amazing <3
I never post comments, but wintjes03 cut henriggle some slack. He LIKES the band? Why dis him? Especially if he's from the USA. The Hip aren't widely known there like they are in Canada, So its easy for someone there to never hear of them.
The hip isnt near as known as they are in Canada.. Ask Americans about them. Most havent heard of them... So clearly, it is you who is the loser.. and most of all, an ignoramous
Great song. Some soul in that one. Just heard about this band tonight, and starting to really enjoy the songs. I think I'm gonna listen to this again.
this song puts me in the moment ..it is an accoustic and lyrical genius...well done Gord!!! I had the occassion to see "The Hip" in Detroit at the Fillmore in May. standing room 1 row away from stage BRAVO!!! Just bought the 2cd "yer Favourits" today. my condolances to your loss, a beautiful tribute....~james~
i had that moment last weekend at my secluded camp.. the sun was going down and my ipod speakers were blasting this while the fire crackled next to me... and as i sat there the world did seem to come together and make sense... it was beautiful
Lucky Lucky man you are camping is the closest i get to serenity this song makes me want to do it to the extreme. On some pad of flat land in the middle of the woods, fire crackling like you said with that song somehow playing, even just if i could play it on a guitar and sing it wow, how i wish
whoever disliked this...i'd like to shoot in the face...sorry

This comment has received too many negative votes show

Great song. Some soul in that one. Just heard about this band tonight, and starting to really enjoy the songs. I think I'm gonna listen to this again.

i had that moment last weekend at my secluded camp.. the sun was going down and my ipod speakers were blasting this while the fire crackled next to me... and as i sat there the world did seem to come together and make sense... it was beautiful

Lucky Lucky man you are camping is the closest i get to serenity this song makes me want to do it to the extreme. On some pad of flat land in the middle of the woods, fire crackling like you said with that song somehow playing, even just if i could play it on a guitar and sing it wow, how i wish
