Hi! I take a look at the score and it seems to suggest that Liszt actually intended the opening octaves to be played with the left hand, hence the pedal mark for the following tritones. Otherwise it would be useless. What do you think ?
Liszt is my favorite composer; I recognize the augmented chords, the chromatic harmonies, the mysterious melody in the bass, the tremolos, ... I love every note :)

His last composition was actually "Bagatelle sans tonalité", S216a (1885); "Unstern!" was written in 1881 with latter additions.
Anyway, great, terrifying piece!
