Water or coffee boils at 212 degrees, McD's text book rule is to keep the "free refill" coffee hot at 187 degrees (this probably reduces the number of refills). At this temperature water or coffee can cause third degree burns. The 91 year old woman was wearing three layers of clothing. The coffee spilled on to her lap when putting in cream & sugar, the 187 degree coffee soaked into her clothing continually burning her genitals, thighs & legs up to 16% of her body. She never got the 2.7 million.

They never show you any pictures of her third degree burns or tell you that macdonalds served their coffee unusually hot to hike profits or that big corporations put a lot of money into campaigns to hijack the hot coffee case to keep the poor from being compensated for harms caused by the powerful. Try an experiment, next time you have coffee, heat it up on your stove to just below boiling, take a drink, then tell me if that is how hot coffee really should be... Just remember you will have to type how it felt, since your tongue and throat will need to have skin grafts...

Leave it to Faux news to leave out the part about over 700 other prior complaints, the 3rd and 4th degree burns that required skin grafting, the fact that the judge reduced the compensation, the temp of the coffee being over 180 degrees. Most "frivolous" cases are easily detected and thrown out of court.

Leave it to foolkmess to leave out the part about this not being a story about the McDonald's incident, but about superfluous and silly warning labels. If this had been a story particularly about Liebeck, it would have included all the details he's whining about.

You should watch the documentary "Hot Coffee", it explains the true facts of the case and actually shows the burns that Stella had. A lot of people have the wrong ideas about this case, and Stella never received 2.7 million dollars. The court overruled the jury's decision and awarded her something like $400-600,000 instead.

Stella did not get $2.7 million. The judge immediately cut it in half. Macdonald's contested it, and finally settled for an amount that is never to be disclosed. Stella spent the first few days in intensive care, then all the debridement, skin harvesting, grafts, horrible pain, and 2 years of physical therapy before she was able to walk normally. Third degree burns over her abdomen, thighs, and scrotum at age 79 were not fun.

Also this guy is an idiot. The warning on the lighter obviously refers to using it in an already burning fire which could cause the liquid to ignite blow up your hand (something that may not be intuitively obvious many, if not most people and therefore requires a warning).

There's nothing frivolous about the idea that coffee should not be served at 190 degrees (making it completely undrinkable without causing serious damage). I like how they leave out the fact that she originally only wanted $20k to cover her medical bills and the fact that the award was reduced to just $640k.

@TimelyMeerkat Ms. Liebeck was burned over 16% of her body, 3rd degree burns, which means charring. She was in the hospital for 8 days...not to mention physical therapy for at least two years. There's considerably more to this story than Fox included in this "report."

actually stella liebeck offered mcdonalds to pay a simply $20,000 to pay for her medical bills but after mcdonalds refusing and offering only $800 she decided to sue mcdonalds. Afterwards she re offered mcdonalds at least $300,000 in compesation. but once again mcdonalds refused and offered her $90,000. She refused it and continue the case and then she won the case and got 2.7 million. Way to go mcdonalds.
