  • ...am i dying?

  • Someone explain what's happening

  • @EdwardTheMagnificent It's like Tempest but you can also get points by ramming enemies once they get to the outer rim where you are. You're on like a tube shooting at creatures coming from the other side.

  • Viva Llamasoft !!

  • I was hoping this was gonna be like DDR...until it stopped making sense. Which was around the first five seconds after the menu.

  • Kind of reminds of the game that brain washes the Enterprise crew on that one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

    Utterly indecipherable but incredibly hypnotic.

  • What The Fuck Did I Just Watched?

  • So, is this what became of the (sadly) unreleased Unity for GameCube? Or am I mixing things up and this was a completely different project?

  • Any one remember Llamatron. It was coded by the same dude this, as well as the music visualizer for XBOX 360 . Jeff Minter Rulez

  • POLYBIUS!

  • Mindblown. Fin

  • "CONGRATULATION! YOU SUCCESS!

    A WINNER IS YOU!

    BUT OUR GIRAFFE IS IN

    ANOTHER CASTLE!"

    I lol'd

  • The first time I ever saw space giraffe was also the first time i'd ever done Salvia. Tripped the F*CK out.

  • okay...I seriously typed in space whales and then I was like okay why not space giraffes...and there was seriously something called space giraffe....wtf....

  • @MasteroChieftan why the hell anyone would search for space whales? space giraffes are much more cooler

  • What is this I dont even!

  • I...I...don't.........WTF?!?!

  • im confused

  • ZOMG!! Thank you for uploading this!! So many people have asked me "what is a Space Giraffe??" and now I can show them this!

I have loved this game since it first came out! I don't understand why so many people dislike it. I'm not sure which is more fun, the gameplay itself or the comments at the end of each level (I don't think any other game has told me, "you are meh" before! XD)... maybe the people who don't like it just don't get it...?

    ヽ(⌒∇⌒)ノ W00T SPACE GIRAFFE!!

  • This got a perfect 100 by hardcore Gamer but a 20 by UK something.

    wat

  • Space Giraffe has some of the most contrasted reviews I've ever seen for a game. It stems from the fact that many people simply don't understand the game and thus judge it poorly (and unfairly). "I can't see what's happening!" "The graphics are terrible!" They don't understand the twitch gameplay elements; They never experienced the subconscious "click" when the all those crazy colors and shapes suddenly make sense.

    They just don't know.

  • @kruks It's because they weren't gunning down polygon people littered with texture maps. That's why.

  • @kruks I'm sorry, WHAT ARE YOU ON!?

  • this game looks awesome!! i hope it comes to the playstation store

  • Play it high and you will unlock the innermost secrets of the universe.

  • Remember the Polybius legend? How much am I willing to bet that there could be a connection between that and Space Giraffe? I mean, it's possible.

  • @Akriloth2160 Nah, apparently polybius had fucked up shit in it (dying screams, corpse pictures, luciferianism)

This doesn't seem so... mind warping.

  • Haha, how true. How true. Although, given the way urban legends can get exaggerated, I'm still of the belief that it was a badly-constructed early demo of tempest.

  • this game is great for when your high =D

  • Someone ...is getting a seizure playing this game.

  • Worst game Minter has ever made ,It's just a bunch of flat Tempest levels . I downloaded this from Xbox live and was very disapointed

  • It's not surprise that the guy behind this is the one who made llamatron.

  • I had to find out what this "Space Giraffe" game was after hearing about it. What's going on? All I'm seeing is a ton of colours, all I'm hearing is a ton of stock noises, farmyard animals and a smattering of welsh numbers on the title screen, and all I'm reading is a bunch of faux-Engrish. I get the feeling it's trying to pander to the internet and failed spectacularly.

  • Jeff Minter is great, this game is incredible.

  • I like Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar better but this is a lot like it and its from the same guy, Jeff Minter. Cool techno soundtrack and sound effects.

  • Is this like Tempest 2007?

  • is dat sum Polybius?

  • its like tempest if you took a shit on it.

  • If any game has ever needed a big EPILEPSY warning sticker on it, it was this one. Tripiest game since the original Tempest and gauranteed to give you, your neighbor, and anyone within a 4 mile range an instant seizure by level 4. Loved the game with all my heart.

  • Ever tried REZ? :D

  • @starstarstar42 ...and then beat hazard came along. Love these trippy old school type games :)

  • @zigzagtoes space giraffe is more epilectic-unfriendly

  • @starstarstar42 This game shouldn't cause an attack. It's not flashing bright colors that could trigger it. The opening for the Dethklok show is a big danger for flashing red.

  • @starstarstar42 Could someone explain to me why this needs an epilepsy warning? I could understand a photosensitive seizure warning, but not epilepsy.

  • @GeneStarwind09 Probably because of all the flashy lights.

  • @LocutusIsBorg But less than 1% of epileptics are affected by strobe lighting. Therefore, 99% of those with "EPILEPSY" won't give a fuck about such a warning sticker. Not to mention, even those without epilepsy can be affected by strobe/flashing lights in different ways. It's a preposterous generalisation. Not that I'd blame the person. Even I myself used to believe that seizures were mainly caused by flashing lights. I'd blame Hollywood and TV in general.

  • @GeneStarwind09 The one person I ever knew with prominent epilepsy was mainly triggered by flashing lights. That and low blood sugar, from what I remember. She was a weird person.

  • im tripping balls

  • this game... it looks ox-cellent.

  • So it's tempest, but you don't shoot certain targets, and it's combined with WMP11 visualizers and techno. Cool.

  • I haven't figured out if I like this game yet. I love the presentation and audio. Is sometiems hard to see whats going on though. Nice video. I really like the child's voice on the title screen too - is very different.

  • @MirageCult All it's saying is nought, two, one, three, three, one, three, two... in Welsh. Not all that mystifying.

  • The soundtrack was done by The KLF.

  • Cool looking game, like Tempest on acid. Will have to try it at some point.

  • Amazing game... -True spiritual successor to the Tempest.

  • not really.... but if u get high and play tis game then..... idk ull fuck ur self up

  • OW FUCK MY SEIZURE

  • XD i watched a friend play the demo and laughed lots. its so stupid and theres just random moo-ing and saying giraffe tastic :p lol its so stupid :p

  • I think less "acid trip" and this game would have sold a LOT more copies. Don't get me wrong, there's something "artsy" about the whole presentation, but as far as gameplay is concerned, the acid trip visuals actually detract...

  • Shame they couldn't do better on the soundtrack. Alister Lidsay works for Sony tho. So I suppose he owns the rights to the Jag TK2 soundtrack. TELEVISION IS THE RETENA OF THE MINDS EYE!

  • when i first played this game i thought it was one of those shitty games that had no point to it...but i actually played the tutorial and it finally came to me....this game actually has strategy! this game is great, i just wish u can see the bullets easier, still fun nonetheless

  • Blink-timing, yak-tastic, klf'ing to animal noises. For those of us brought up on Defender, Tempest and Gyruss.

I wonder if Julian Rignall still plays games.

  • this DOES remind me of tempest

makes me wanna play it even more

  • wtf

  • any game that samples the KLF is ok with me!

  • I don't see either "space" nor "giraffe"; but I do see "acid" and "trip".

  • how about you try playing it on acid, makes the game way better.

  • Im pretty sure you wouldn't be able to play this on acid. I couldn't even finish a lap in Motoracer in 20 minutes.

  • Jeff Minter is a genius but he takes too many drugs XD

  • "The concept is lost on most that play this and it's shame considering how satisfying it can be when you understand the rules.Huge scores come more from tactics rather than mindless shooting."

Well gee, how can ANYONE miss how to play properly with such a clearly presented set of instructions in the tutorial and all the helpful comments and popups on the screen?

    oh wait...

  • this man sarcasm is truth.

This game is terrible and if you've spent hours trying to figure out how to play it you are a tool it's a fact scientists in a lab have actually discovered that Space Giraffe is played by tools what will they think of next?

  • 0_o this is supposed to be unbelievably to trippy right?

  • The concept is lost on most that play this and it's shame considering how satisfying it can be when you understand the rules.Huge scores come more from tactics rather than mindless shooting

It's really not like Tempest and the biggest problem people have with this is they play it the wrong way

Clear Tempest from your mind when you play this otherwise you will end up disapointed

    Smart game once it clicks

  • What an awful looking LSD tripping spaceshit

  • what an ugly game

  • I am high. This game rocks. Thank you Jeff.

  • jeff minter is a drug addled furry faggot who should never make another game again.

  • If this rates as the worst game you've ever played you need to buy more than two games.

  • em i backed?

  • Yeah this game needs to be available for the PC !!!!!!!!

  • Llamasoft just released a PC version if you're interested.

Be careful, though, you need a fast computer to run it.

  • neeeed foooor cooompuuuuteeeerrrr! :O

  • That looks like teh shit.

  • Great game wasted on people that don't understand it's gameplay.Play it like Tempest and you're missing the point but also playing it wrong anyhow

Generally gamers don't take to stuff done differently and so if a game feels initially awkward they give up - Too Human is an example of this

Personally i couldn't go back to Tempest after playing this deightfull rush of a game

Well done mr Minter your style is quite unlike anyone elses

  • I like the multicoloured numbers. Reminds me of Defender.

  • ??? This looks really trippy. Flashing colors in the background while you're shooting weird shapes while internet memes spew out of you and appear onscreen.

  • immagine playing this when ur backed??? (high) o.o

  • Maybe get baked for once then you can comment

  • scary dream 4 stoners

  • where's the giraffe? all i see are a lot of colors

  • Well I've got NO idea what was going on there. It looked nice though.

  • I need this game, so cool.

  • game looks fun but cant stand this dance music. generic beat, digital sounds. hire some people who own analog music gear and know what to do with it :/ sadly people seem to eat up crappy dance much, and have no knowledge of analog. so its mute for that! thx for sharing video

  • I've been playing Minters games from the early 80's. They guy is a tripped out genius. He looks at stuff from a totally different view point. The tripped out Pink Floyd/The Orb type music with the visuals and "out-there" themes are brilliant. This is gaming from "outside of the box".

    The guy is genius!

  • I'm old enough to remember playing Jeff's games on a Spectrum 48K. Nice to see he's still making weird stuff.

  • I dont know what the hell is going on, but i like the visuals and music

  • By complete idiots.

  • as bad as this game may look its not like it looks bad as shaq-fu!

  • jeff claims its not a clone but looks similar. I was a huge fan of his work in the C64 days. congratulation Jeff Minter on this brilliant trippy ass game

  • dude get lost....you don't know what ur talking about. Learn some history before you mouth off.

  • this game sux, it's just a display of how the developer could play with colors

  • This game is not for wimps. It's a true arcade experience for the seasoned videogamer. Not you silly FPS phsychos

  • thank you! someone knows why this was released

  • Jeff Minter the creator of this game is a light synthesizer visualization software pro. That is what he has been doing the last decade

  • This game actually made me and my friend angry, and we were just watching it! I give it a 1.5/10. I couldn't even tell where the enemies were, where my ship was, or what the i was firing and at who. Imagine playing this on the button laden Xbox360 controller. besides, heroin and beer are much cheaper. You could spend 1 hour playing this game for $60 or just go to the bar, and get a loaded tab with the same effect.

  • This game kicks ass...it hurts my brain but it's so goooood lol

  • the "mumu" sample is classic KLF - this game just rocks!

  • I dont understand this at all

  • Love this game...Yak The Hairy did it again !

  • This is Jeff's best work ever. I thank him for his hard work on this.

  • Dude you are an idiot. You should learn about the developer and the creator of both games. Have you even bothered to play it? It's an evolution to the similiarities of Tempest but way better! How about variety in the game arcade?

  • Giraffes that fly through space or some kind of extraterrestrial matter that can give someone seizures, and shooting who knows what at random things?

    Sounds kinky.

  • shoot, collect, ram. In that order always.

    Over

    and over

    and over.

I thought Jeff was over Tempest... risk something new! This is just a tiny gameplay upgrade with acid VIS on top. Nothing new actually.

    also: tutorials supposedly explain everything

    I'm dissapointed.

  • tempest ripoff

  • I like the sneezing sound effect

  • Tempest 2007

  • The music at 6 minutes was f##cking awesome, also this game is the BOMB!! love it!! is this for xbox live only?

  • A winner is you!

  • *winnar

  • winrar

  • sick if u r blazed

  • best 400pts i ever spend on xbla

  • anon approves

  • habeeb it.

  • fuckin awsome. especially with stoned condition XD

  • POD GET!

DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU DESU

  • bestial

  • So its basicly a 3D version of space invaders with way to many colors and shit?

  • Yes, of course it is, fucktard.

  • Hard to tell since one cant see shit. I had to ask. But if you wanna be a total dick, its your call.

  • Well, no, actually, I think being a total dick was *your* call. And it's "way *too* many colours", you illiterate mingepiece. And "basically". And I'd actually be interested to hear your explanation as to how the design of Space Giraffe is equivalent to Space Invaders. Not seeing a lot of parallels myself.

  • gay

  • uber gay

  • uber pwnage r-tard

  • south park haha im guna watch that now

  • From what I can se you are lined up at the bottom of a line and shoots stuff that comes down from the top of the box, only it comes in different shapes instead of the quadrant box. How is this not similar to Space Invaders? And are you a dev or something? Seing as you seem to take it so personal.lol.

  • You're on the edge of a surface. There's more dynamic available than simple left-right motion. In Space Invaders you have to shoot stuff before it reaches the bottom, in SG you *want* to accumulate stuff at the "bottom", etc, etc...

In short, don't go anywhere near game design as a career because you suck at the most basic level of even identifying what a game *is*.lol

  • With that shitty vid, no way I could figure out what the hell was going on, like tons of other people who watch this game on video. I recon you are a one of the game designers, huh.

btw, I dont give a rats ass what you think of me as a game designer cause I have never intended to be one.

  • well, you can't blame me for YT compression, that's just how it is.

(Oh, and it's "reckon". Goddamnit, is everyone in the universe illiterate these days?)

If you don't give a rat's arse (yes, there is an apostrophe in "rat's") then why bother commenting at all?

I don't understand the motivation of you creatures, I really don't. You comment but you really can't be arsed to think anything at all.

  • I'm sorry. I am not english and like most other people on the internets I dont waste space on aspostrophes. If youd rather take it in Norwegian we can do that. Can't stop loving your ad hominem "arguments", though.

And you should be smart enough to understand when the consumers doesnt get what your product is its not because there is something wrong with the consumers.

    Thank you, and goodbye.

  • Good, maybe you'll simply not bother making inane comments then. I really don't see the point. Especially since you posted to moan about the compression when if you actually read the description it actually mentions that yes, there are unavoidable compression artefacts.

And I don't understand what you are on about with respect to "consumers", "product" and a compressed YT video. I'm not charging anyone to watch it, you know.

  • looks like a bad windows media player visualization

  • looks like a bad youtube comment

  • What the fuck is happening?

  • Can u not like die?? ur running into the enemies -.- ill just get the game and read instructions nvr mind :)

  • what?

  • i would love to see you tackle a FPS, I can imagine it would resemble the acid experiments on soldiers.

    nice work fair Yak

  • I can't tell what the hell is going.

  • It's on XBLA now.

  • The music between 1.30 and 2.15 actually sounds like a Giraffe dying in space...

  • I'm sure I read you as quoted that this wasn't Tempest again.

Your most original play mechanic was the seperate X and Y controls in Hellgate, I reckon. I haven't played that since the days of my VIC20 but I recall invisible enemies later on and an infinitely long final level.

  • Ahhhh... I so loved Tempest 2000 on the Jag. So many games are addictive and frustrating at the same time, but not Tempest 2000. I read Space Giraffe is going for the same friendly style. :)

That Space Giraffe's "MOOOOOO!!!" stands out so much I think is going have people's neighbours going "Seriously, WTF?" as that'll be the major sound to go through walls. :D

  • An absolute must have I can play this for hours on end

  • Brilliant Jeff.. Cat is well pleased as well. Thank you

  • Ahhh, lovely Giraffey. Can I have one? PLeeease!? Soooooon? I promise to feed it's foes all the electric death they handle! Then a little bit more. Then a lot more.

Come to me Giraffe... come... =)

  • Gawd... I have been wanting this since GDC. I wish I'd come to shake your hand. Oh well.

  • lokks good but the animal sounds judt dont fit the type of game and seem stupid...just turns me right off the game

  • nah the sfx are fine, in fact many of the alpha team went out of their way to praise the sound design. And a Llamasoft game without animal noises would just be stupid.

  • The SFX are awesome. Makes me wanna play some GR++

  • That looks madder than a tiger in a leotard! I'm in :)

  • Me wantee

  • This reminds of the game Devil Get Toilet Paper.

  • oh noes - where's 'i love horses' gone?

i think this game is going to be the best 400 ms points i ever spent!

  • That was exactly in the spec I sent to MS when we first proposed the game. Nothing *else* in that original spec doc is even relevant now, but I did state exactly that I wanted people to feel that it was the best points they ever spent }:-D.

I think we've done that. Really pleased with it }:-).

  • Jeff Minter is a fucking madman, and I love him for it. Looks like this is e
