This group was so versatile with Billy Davis Jr's soul and R&B style to Marilyn and Florence's pop and jazz to Ron's Classical and Lamonte's distinctive Bass voice. They were one of a kind.
Love this! Anyone else remember this song when Eastern Airlines was a sponsor of that little ole theme park in Florida called Disney or something like that?
Yes I had just started 1st grade...I remember running to the television when I heard them coming on, and yes The Wonderful World of Disney was at the top also!
A great song, written by the great Jimmy Webb, who also wrote "MacArthur Park" and "Galveston." I'd heard that this song was the proposed theme music for a television series that never was.
"sadly, thousands of black people are born each year without soul...it is a growing crisis. won't you give to help? support blacks without soul today" -B.B. King
@Putaspellonyou Blacks without soul.....?????? You have got to be kidding and evidently have not listened to the Fifth Dimension's albums. To say Billy Davis Jr has no soul is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard.
The 5th Dimension were not the first to do this song. It was first recorded by The Sunshine Company as an album track on their debut album. It was also recorded
subsequently by The Hooterville Honeys(yes the "Petticoat Junction" girls!) which used the same backing track as The Sunshine Company original. It remained unreleased until now. It's on a brand new CD called "The Girls From
Petticoat Junction: Sixties Sounds. The 5th Dimension were probably the third to record it. 3rd times the charm!
Why am I smiling???? It's so weird. I was only about 4 or 5 when this music was in rotation but it puts me in such a nostalgic space. I want to laugh & cry as well.
Honestly, is there another song that is more soothing that what this song is? You just can't listen this and not get the feeling that you are literally being carried away to a beautiful sunset. May this song just live on forever.
I would so love go flying in their beautiful balloon. Just sounds like that would be an amazing flight, as we travel through the air and beyond! I'm shocked that more don't wanna go up and away with them as they go sailing in their beautiful balloon:(
I am going to the Ballon Fiesta in Albuquerque, NM and I will make a video motage of the photos that I take and put this song to it. Perfect! I love this song.
The ladies are so pretty, but the men carried it all with their gorgeous vocals. A lot of people don't want to remember what a dark time that was, and what a joy this kind of buoyant pop music was in the States. Greetings from France, where I live now. I assure you, French music is better than what you'd think, and Turkish? The best. But my love to the States!!
Thanks for the clip and the walk down memory lane. I'd forgotten about The Fifth Dimension but when I heard this, it all came back! Anybody remember an airline (TWA?) used this song in their advertisements?
@MsNayners24, Yes! I remember in about 1967 that a 45 rpm of this song was pressed onto a rectangular red sheet of flexible plastic (suitable for insertion between the pages of a magazine) which you could then pop the spindle hole in the centre and place the sheet on the turntable. It was coloured red for TWA, whose logo was on the plastic. (I was envious at the time, because my family worked for Pan Am and Air France!)
@scorpiowatertiger Wow, you have a great memory!! So, the song would play from/off of the plastic sheet? I vaguely remember something like this. It's funny how each of us remember different things. Although I was young I do remember and love the 60's.
@MsNayners24, yes directly off the plastic, which would spin around the turntable, but with square corners. National Geographic Magazine used to insert sheets like that all the time. BTW, I believe that everybody is born with a great memory, but with lousy recall - that's why hypnotists all so often called on to "unlock" people's memories. Growing up in the Bay Area and flying around (on Pan Am) in the 1960s, I have some awesome memories. There's a new show on ABC about Pan Am back then.
@CommanderFalcon23 Oddly enough it inspired me to try my first joint. Not quite the experience of flying an F-4 Phantom I admit, but I was definitely up, up, and away! :-)
The sixties and early seventies were so amazing, aside from all the wars and assassinations. Damn maybe not so amazing............. But musically amazing
As a child/young teen, I thought music would always be as brilliant as this, and the other wonderful songs we heard on the radio. On a drive to the beach we might hear soul, British Invasion, surf music, rhythm & blues, rock, country, or psychedelic rock--all on the same station. It was ironic that while some parts of the South remained segregated, music on the radio was not. What a golden era for music.
This song was performed in a handful of episodes of "Petticoat Junction" in 1967 and '68 by The Bradley Sisters(Linda Kaye Henning, Lori Saunders, And Meredith MacRae).
Now, urban legend has it that they were the first to actually perform the song!
In other words, the versions by Johnny Mann, The 5th Dimension, The Sunshine Company(said to be the original), are ALL covers of THEIR "original" version!
Don't really know if that's true, but that's what I've heard. It maybe just a myth, though.
I was like two or three at the time...but I remember commercials on TV with this great group...was it Jello pudding? I wish someone knew....this music I would hear asI took naps...

@casey3234 and not only did the song have a hip vibe from people thinking it had a connection to grass but cocaine was sold in balloons! No kidding....
this brings back memories for my dad...........he was working in the psych ward while getting his degree in psychology. he had a patient who would sing this song nonstop.
I remember as a small child in the 60's watching the Fifth Dimension, thinking they made adulthood look so cool...I couldn't wait. LOL, if only I knew.
@tonybklyn I had those same thoughts as a child in the 60's. And when I grew up I was going to live in a split level in the suburbs with a wonderful husband and kids like Samantha on Bewitched and give fantastic dinner parties with music by the 5th Dimension.
@MsTexas73 The actual ceremony was not aired until 1971 (Andy Williams was the first host), but NBC used to have a special program that featured some of the winners receiving their award or performing.
