Because the idea of having a built in DVD drive in a portable laptop has always been pointless. You can just access drives using wireless. This isnt meant to replace a desktop PC. I don't have a Mac, I've got a Vaio SZ, but I wish it didnt have a built in DVD. An external DVD drive would have been fine and saved weight and space. ALso, MAc book air can be solid state, no moving parts, making it even better as a portable computer.

Maybe it's just a difference of opinion, but give me an internal drive over that any day.
Who wants to take the time to install a program on another computer just to use a CD drive? And no one wants to buy an external CD drive along with purchasing this already expensive laptop. Also, what if you need 2 USB ports? One for a wireless mouse and a printer, or an external hard drive or even all three. Where's the firewire port? Where's the SD card slot? Where's the ethernet port? Sure it's thin, but who cares when you want to use it for something other than putting it in an envelope.
I believe the reason for the lack of the optical CD drive is most people don't use them often anymore. i use them to burn CDs and to import music into my iTunes. That's all. So if the only purpose of the CD drive is what I use it for, then it is worth it to save the space and just download the program on another computer that does have the CD drive. Also, there are two USB ports. If you travel a lot, or move your laptop around a lot, it is very practical to have a light and functional machine.

No, I don't have a question but thank's for offering. I was just making a statement that I'll just upgrade my laptop instead of Buying a Macbook air. Because I'm a PC user I can do that easily instead of spending more money on a newer module that's been tweeked slightly from the previous module. But once again thanks for offering me info on Macbook Air.

I make my entire career thanks to macs. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Games are fine if you're a 13 yearold lifeless kid, and these 'programs' you're talking about are a mystery to me. What would I do if I had a PC and I wanted to.. do my job? I'd throw it out the window and get a Mac.
Also, I don't think the Macbook Air is all that great for me. I need a powerful machine to do my video/audio work. Don't talk down to Macs when you don't know anything about them.
I had ten days working 17 hours out of every 24 with both Macs and Windows. Working with word processors, audiovisual stuff, spreadsheets etc. The works. By day three, the new macs were slow enough that I was ready to throw them out the window, but the windows pcs were still running fine. I certainly know which I preferred from that fiasco. If I had to see the spinning rainbow wheel one more time...

You know why it's called "air"? It's so thin and light that you can throw it into the air like a frisbee. :)
The best thing I like in the air is the LED screen, the backlight keyboard and the multotouch-pad.

Hmm...
If you want a CDROM drive without having to install software on another machine, you need to connect an usb drive.
Now that usb port is taken and you want to connect a standard usb mouse. Then you need an usb hub.
If there's no ethernet port and you want to connect to a wired network you need an usb network adapter.
The mini DVI connector need an adapter if you want to connect an external monitor or projector through DVI or VGA, or TV through composite or S-Video.

the macbook isnt very convienient, due to its thickness....
just because it's soo thin dosnt mean it can proform better than an ordinary laptop. take this into consideration: looks may be diceiving.
but dont get me wrong, the mac book can have various qualities, it's nice, thin, it also might be capable, to have the same proformance as an ordinary laptop, but it would be more expencive, but the chances of it running well are highly low.. BUT IT'S STILL A GREAT SYSTEM.. I GIVE IT A 8 OUT OF 10

that its just a stupid justification: "if you dont have money..." the true results are that these "mc book" its a machine that rely on others pc to hace true comunication with the most comun task like listen to a cd. what would you do if you dont have another pc near and you want to install a game or a program?

I make my entire career thanks to macs. You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. Games are fine if you're a 13 yearold lifeless kid, and these 'programs' you're talking about are a mystery to me. What would I do if I had a PC and I wanted to.. do my job? I'd throw it out the window and get a Mac.
Also, I don't think the Macbook Air is all that great for me. I need a powerful machine to do my video/audio work. Don't talk down to Macs when you don't know anything about them.

I had ten days working 17 hours out of every 24 with both Macs and Windows. Working with word processors, audiovisual stuff, spreadsheets etc. The works. By day three, the new macs were slow enough that I was ready to throw them out the window, but the windows pcs were still running fine. I certainly know which I preferred from that fiasco. If I had to see the spinning rainbow wheel one more time...

to the dude above. i like macs a lot im just sayng that the mac book air rely on other machines (not pc`s exclusivly) to do all the task u could want. and another thing: sometimes u just dont have a conection to internet and just have the cd. So to end my argument i would just go for the regular macbook. its thin enough and have a cd drive and a dvd burner...

So the whole point of having this thing is only if you have another computer to use with it? Man.. so wouldn't that add to the price overall? My computer cost me $2,000.. plus the $1700 for the MacBook air.. putting me at $3,700 total for my Macbook, oh and don't forget if you wanna get the SSD (Which is the freakin' point of subcompact notebooks) I gotta spend $999 for 16GB less space? Please, this thing is a fad just like the MotoRazr was, and look how many people hate that thing.

No its not the thinnest in the world, nor is it the lightest. Sony beat them to it. Why would you need a backlit keyboard? you should be able to type without looking, also the light from the screen should suffice if he says its as bright as it is.
