I was shocked when I first saw him here as I'd come from the vid of him when he was first enjoying the success of this song. But then, it's most awesome to see someone doing what they love at all ages. If he can get up out of a chair, get dress, get to a concert and pull it off, more power to him! Ronnie James Dio was the same. always singing right to the end.
Man, how the years go by. Didn`t realize he had gotten this old. If you grew up in the 70`s, these songs were in the soundtrack of your life. Glad to see him still kicking, although it kind of pains me to see him looking so frail...
Great artist, great songwriter. I'm sure I'm just one of millions of Gordon Lightfoot fans who are so happy that Gordon has been able to continue to get up there on the stage and do what he does best. My favorite GL song is "Early Morning Rain."
all i can say is when we lose music like this it sucks . im a 34 year old man that grew up on him. what a lose to me, i love the atraight up voice and the things like good music in my house he gave me sundown oh my great singer song writer love ya ,mr sundown
I saw the first concert after his stroke....in Whitewater, Wisconsin at the Young Auditorium.....three days after he had his stroke!!!! He was in such bad shape he had had to super glue his guitar pick to his fingers but he got up there and played for like three hours.
He still sounds good...but he doesn't look good..poor man...not sure of his health issues but he looks like he is fighting cancer. Keep singing Gordon...and you were one of the last really good song writers.
I was in 1st grade in 74 & GL looked not exactly a spring chicken-here we are now ,and I'm definetlty not-then see this vid-Yes a Die Hard blue collar music Veteran
Having just discovered Gordon only a year ago, I can honestly say nothing today compares with the talent this man has, and the passion for songwriting. Thank you Gordon!
It brings me tears to realize how time flies...how quickly we get old...but artists, being creative, have the consolation that their creations live on...I have loved this song..and I still love the artist...Thank you Mr Lightfoot!! Thanks for the upload!!
His voice isn't what it used to be but I am a proud Canadian and even prouder that this man is a Canadian. He has sold out Massey Hall for more than 40 years (and counting). NO OTHER MUSICAL ARTIST who has played Massey Hall can claim that. Thanks Gord, we will always love you. Just listen to SONG FOR A WINTER'S NIGHT (from "Gord's Gold" in 1975 and you will know how great a singer/songwriter he was in his prime). His voice is magical on that song.
Looks like the crypt keeper..but I love his music. Sounds good but looks in pain, I hope he's doing this because he wants to, not because he has to. He looks uncomfortable and in pain
I watched him perform in Wenatchee, WA two days before this... awe inspiring performance, incredible stamina, beautiful stage lighting. A very fun evening!
@biggraz1 Gordy suffered a ruptured abdominal aneurysm in 2002 and was in a comma for several weeks and had several surgeries. He lost ALOT of weight with all of that. In 2006, he suffered a mild stroke and lost use of some of his fingers, but eventually regained use of them.
@litew8, you hit the nail on the head! The idiots making fun of him don't realise that they're all going to age, and won't remain hunks forever. It's part of life, and our society idolises the young, it's really quite sad.
Here he is in his 70's. He's been in a 6 week coma, had a tracheotomy (can't help your voice any), suffered a stroke with a loss of some use of one hand, and he keeps coming out to play and sing for us, his fans. What can you say?
@litew8 I don't think its the getting old bit that is the problem. Its just that we all think that nothing changes and that we - and our heroes - will always be the same.......
Thanks kindly for posting this clip. I wasn't able to see him in the L.A. area recently, so it's great to hear him. For those who don't know, GL had a serious illness about 10 years ago, and he was in a coma and nearly died. His voice was affected some admittedly. Still he's "the True North strong and free"...and I'd like to hear Hootie and the Blowfish playing this well after 50 years.
"Sundown" was inspired by his then girlfriend, Cathy Smith, later more infamously known for her involvement in the death of John Belushi. Lightfoot has commented in interviews that she was "the one woman in my life who most hurt me."Released in March 1974, "Sundown" allowed Lightfoot to regain the momentum that his career had taken three years earlier with "If You Could Read My Mind"
You look at Gordon and you hope, in the GOOD sense of the phrase, that he's feeling no pain in his golden years. You also hope the other sense of the phrase is not in play.
He did not look well..he looked like he was in pain..and after song was done..he looked like he wanted to fall down...love the man...but come on..time when to fold em sweetie...
All respect to the man...despite he's 72 and smoked most of his life, he's still out there trying to please the fans. But he looked like he was strugglling to get through it. I actually thought he might pass out at 2:38. Great, but bittersweet to see him struggling.
look i'll be 55 the 20th of july,,,, this was the best music ever the late 60s early 70s we all age gordon, like all of us age,,,,, still the best sound there was
@ doniphandude - I don't hear his voice failing at all........for christ sake, he looks like motherfuckin' Skelator up there, and he doesn't waver flat even once! GL has still got it... even if he DOES look 90!
I'll never forget when i was a young lad my grandfather telling me, he said grandson, it's hell getting old. Fifty years later i know exactly what he was saying..... I love ya buddy, and i'll be in touch real soon... :)
I was hoping to see a glimpse of his band in this vid, particularly his guitarist, Terry Clements, who recettly passed away -- this clip was from his final tour. Even though we can't see him, we hear him, and his presence is felt, in this clip.
thanks for posting! I wanted to see his concert here and wasnt able to get to it. He still has it. I blame the sound guy on this one, mic was way too hot and he backed off. You can hear sound ringing on verge of feed back. Excellent quality! thank you
@doniphandude The voice is a funny thing isn’t it. Your post reminded me of Bob Dylan, since he gave GL his award in Canada, but you hear his voice and its changes are astonishing, I herd Cat Stevens sing just recently as Yousuf Islam and you’d swear he hadn’t changed since the 60s, and GL maybe his voice is failing, maybe he is adding nuance and emotional depth to the song. I don’t know.
