The phrase "A crock of shit" applies to intentional, concocted misrepresentations of the truth. It's related to that sense of the word "cooked" (or cooked up), meaning to falsify, as in "He cooked the books"- kept false records, or "He cooked up a story"- created an extravagant lie.
