  • how fast the train?

  • Why did they put on a K3 when it had an S5T?

  • Is this the biggest operating diesel locomotive in the world?

  • I've always enjoyed the sound of the EMD's. I dont mind running AC4400's but if I had a choice I would take a EMD any time. They work on command (we alway's say with the GE's you ask them) and are great to run.

  • This is great everytime I watch it!

  • such a beast. good catch.

  • I'll bet those EMD's aren't even breathing hard for 70 mph!

  • great footage

  • GO BABY GO!!!

  • That thing sounds so strong its almost Frightning!

  • Nice scream from the turbos as well!

  • @EWS60008 2:35 is where the fun begins!

  • he needs to like zoom and stuff

  • They welded (figuratively) two SD40s together to produce this gem. Unfortunately it cannot navigate corners well and tore up the tracks in the mountains. You would be seeing any more 8 axle locomotives soon.

  • The DDA40X were simply the best looking locomotives ever built for UP (diesel era anyway).

  • @txfirefighter4305 Union Pacific puchased that locomotive unit in 1969.

  • @CMI1986X64 Well, there is that ...

  • This is the true definition of Diesel Power!!!

Tell Al Gore and the EPA they can all go suck it!!!!

    Monster locomotive, Awsome video!!!

  • ROOTS BLOWER BABY!!!

  • why don't they put them back into service on the stack trains they seem fast and its a light freight for them to pull nothing heavy even though they are they most powerful engines in the world

  • @MrZkr123

i think the D-D drivetrain (two 4-axle wheelsets) that they have was causing excessive track wear and flange wear, so were getting through wheels faster than the locomotives using C-C driveline set ups (C-C being two 3-axle wheelsets)

  • @Xantec this would have probably been a very good candidate for a radial truck, even a 4 axle one. But I can't see how the wheel and track wear could have been much worse than the steam days, the drivers on those had a much longer wheel base and they were solid.

  • Nice K3 that thing's got!

  • @zozey1231 It's actually a M5. But the speed of the train makes it sound like a K3.

  • @jadog31

    Huh, that's weird.

  • @zozey1231 Actually, to me it sounds like a K-5LA.

  • @jadog31 It's not an M5 or a K5LA, it is a K3. The factory horn that is usually installed is a RS5T or S5T. the Western Pacific Historical Museum puts their M5 on when it's out in Portola.

  • nice!

  • Man O' man Great job! I see it is rather flat there, now I know what wide open country is. Thanks!

  • does this thing ever get around to the east coast....

  • @hawleywe Obviously,that's WAY out of Uncle Pete's territory.

  • That's what I call high-balling.

  • Great machine, can imagine it's brutal on the track though, well, more curvier tracks.

I saw the one in Portola recently.

  • @N330AA These were not practical on curved tracks as they were rail eaters

  • @Toedrip Indeed, though i guess they can't be any worse than steam trains. Do you know if any of the bogies where either blind or had sideslip?

  • This Baby's HAULIN ASS

  • damn shes hauling

  • The Deltic is the best locomotive, and had great nameplates and can reach 100 mph. 3,300hp in one bodyshell.

  • Skip to about 4min in... then you get to see more than the front end!

    Tiny train, eh?

  • Train 1 You 0

  • Holy Shit thats Big

  • why does the engine sound fluctuate or pulsate when they are at their max load or held at constant rpm please.....

  • how many motors in this locomotive,

  • These things were BEASTS back in their time.

  • how many Hp is she got ?

  • @nordyk2 6,600hp

  • the best loco ever made

  • Why so much Locomotive? Are the bigger engines faster?

  • @414pwz - ever since the Big Boy, Union Pacific was all about building big locos rather than double heading. With diesels, where multiple-unit does not mean extra crew, I guess they just couldn't break the habit.

  • k5la

  • That's awesome, I've never seen a pacing video of the DD40 before! Thanks for sharing with us!!!

  • people who get to drive this beautiful locomotive must be the the luckiest people in the world if ya'll agree....you know the processor and for people that done....................................its this -----> thumbs up!

  • @cnw8577 THATS STUPID

  • Is that the Nathan M5? It doesn't sound like it.

  • I did that with the Coast Starlight. It was going about 77 mph!!!!!!!!!!!

  • they should make something like that this days someting similar but different in body and performance

  • actually its a DDA40X not a DD40x

  • Beautiful! 5*s

  • Hermoso video de "mama gm", es un gusto admirar las lineasde la carroceria y semtir esos motores.

  • i've had this engine 3rd out in my consist.

  • How many km/h ?

  • Spotters.... choop choop

  • Railfan pr0n never fails to please! Thanks for posting!

  • My favorite train of all time.

  • ttmot is correct about engine size. Each of the V-16 two-cycle engines is 10,320 cubic inches. My earlier comments were incorrect about CID. Does anyone know the torque ratings? Twelve of these machines still exist, but only the 6936 is still operational.

  • in Brazil has DDM45 company E.F.V.M.

that travel over rail Bilotta metric

  • great video enjoyed

  • I remember when they first made em'. Monster engine overall. Good for the time they needed them. Found out though, just like monster steam engines, the bigger they are, more parts, wear and tear, time age, you name it. Same went for this beast. Lot of money to maintain because of it's enormous size and what it takes to maintain it. Beautiful piece of mechanized architect though. Sad to know they've reached their limit to time and money. Hope they keep one going for what they do here.

  • @jeffspirit11 Sounds right, like the challenger steam engines.

  • isnt that the one that the 3985 pulls when outand about

  • 5*+Favorite

  • Looks like the OP was trying to pace up with you, lol. Keeps adjusting the throttle

  • the name of the locomotive is DDA40X, you missed an "A"

  • Dall'Italia un voto da 10 e lode, è spettacolare!!!

  • Great accelerate at 2:38 !!!!! Fantastic horn and engine sound´s !!!!! Thank´s for your super video.

  • I thought they retired the DD40X. costed to much money to maintain them.

  • they did this is the only one and its not normally used in revenue service its only for show and pulling special trains

  • I agree with clay 4916, theres many great locos out there, but if I had to pick the top for both steam and diesel, the UP Big Boy and the DD40X would be hard to knock out of first place. Each was 16 wheel drive, I think the big boy was around six thous. horsepower or so, and far as I know the DD40 was at least 6,600 hp - Im not informed on the 7000 hp version, but why not, add a couple more turbos and there ya are-!lol Ive seen the Big Boy and have tapes of it running- man what a beast-!!!

  • I prefer the class 55 deltic of 3,300 hp and can reach 110 MPH if a deltic raced these the deltic would win by a nose! as the deltic is a passanger loco, these are however good frieght engines but that`s all

  • I do not know how well a Deltic accelerates, but this locomotive is NOT geared for 70 MPH and NEVER was, but is geared for 90 MPH. With ease (though there would be no reason to), it could be geared for 103 or 110 MPH like the Amtrak F40PHs were. I have run the locomotive, and it will outperform two Amtrak F40PHs (and two Amtrak P42DC GEs) on a similarly-sized train with regard to raw, sizzling acceleration. It's a bit rough-riding, but it is one hell of s speedster-even better than the UP E9s.

  • @Redeagle52000 Take no notice of dam Deltics. Some try to compare a cheiftan tank with a little sports car. Yeah, sure a Deltic will do 100- 105 mph but with no more than about 500 tons behind it. My guess is, a DD40X will do its 90 mph or more with a train atleast 4 times that weight. Anyway, Deltics are well overrated in my book anyway. As for mean starting tractive effort figures, they wouldnt pull granny off her pot!! And if the rails are wet, forget it, get out and walk lol.

  • and also, which was it speed in the video??, can you say id to me in kilometers per hour, i´m mexican, thank you

  • 1 mph = 1.6 kph

max 70 mph means about 110 kph

  • thank you

  • That's a sick engine ! gotta love EMD power.

  • that is the single biggest fucking engine i have EVER seen CP cant come close im sad to admit.

  • The 6936 is just awesome. It had two GM 2-cycle V-16 diesel engines. I think each engine was about 3300 cubic inches, and produced about 3300 hp. If I recall, one version had each diesel producing 3500 hp, for a total of 7000 hp. Because of size and weight of pistons, rods, etc. , max rpm was limited to something like 900 rpm. One is still in pristine operating condition. That, and the UP Big Boy, have to be the most spectacular locomotives ever built!

  • these are '645' engines , 645 cubic inches , in each cylinder.

    10,300, per engine

  • Do they fire up both engines when they run this train? (Can the DDA40AX be run with just 1 engine?)

  • anyone have an idea if and where i can find a schedule of her?

  • Comment removed

  • it just doesnt seem right seeing it with that horn

  • AWSOME!!! I have seen a lot of 6936 vids, but has anyone recorded the interior of the train, observation deck etc... because I have seen clips with different types of carriages.

  • I like how the train pulls ahead of you gradually at the end!

  • Unbelievable!!!

    The last of the Mohicans!!!

Although the stories are different this reminds me of once great tribes.

Its very petty that now all they are history.

For its 38 years this unit is in pretty much good shape.

From 2:24 it was accelerating most of the time!

I wish I could see alive that monster piece of engineering.

    Great video!

  • Was this with frieght or passenger?

  • Passenger

  • Love the sound Of this Horn!!

  • Hell ya!!

  • Nothing beats these emd units. 2 645Prime movers. Same as the GP40. My dream is to drive one of those monsters. EMD ALL THE WAY.

  • awesome loco. never liked the silver paint theme for the wheels/carriage.

  • It's so fricken' big he only got the front third of the engine most of the time. It's almost 98 and a half feet long, UP wanted a full 100 feet but the EMD's manufacturing bays weren't quite that big.

In their glory days, two or three of these would pull a unit train at 90 mph in the wide open areas of the country.

  • Be much better if she could pull a freight!

  • WOW the only thing I see in the east are Ac4400s and some SD60s in UP, what the hell kind of moster is that with 4 axle trucks, what kind of power and traction?

  • en(dot)wikipedia(dot)org/wiki/EMD_DDA40X Basically two GP 35's on a single frame.

    Frank

  • Two GP40s on one frame.

  • That, my friend, could pull God to his knees.

  • Fantastic...I can listen to those Turbo EMDs for hours and hours !! My opinion they are the best sounding Diesel Engine ever.

BTW: I'm a fan of the Pacing Videos

  • Nothing beats the sound of a two stroke, turbo EMD diesel!

  • @silicon212 but it has twin engines!

  • @silicon212 A BR Deltic does........

  • @WestCoastRails OMG I have to agree with you guys. The whirring sound of those 32 cylinders at speed is absolutely addicting!! Wow!!

  • You can shut down either set of trucks.

  • at 2:38 she starts to wake up... then at 3:30 she starts to purr... awesome power!

  • lets see double d,yes they where maintance heavy and thursty but the long trucks limit them on where they can go. ie radius of the track.

  • i chase 1 train days ago it was like betwen 55 to 60 mph and it just look like it was at this speed

  • spedd was like 60 mph??

  • between 70 and 75

  • man you got some damn luckey shots I have been looking at some of your other stuff too as a railroad photographer myself well dame on all of them

  • @cnw8577 The overspeed kicks in at 75

  • how fast were you going?

  • THE LA GRANGE THUNDER RIDES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT'S PURRIN LIKE A CADDY! GOOD AND MEAN!

    5 *'s!

  • Listen at it roar!!1

  • You think that engineer mighta been sportin' wood when he throttled that honey up? Hot damn that is great music. Thanks for sharing.

  • Greatest diesel ever! check out that speed! I wonder why they retired them.

  • They retired them because of the cost of maintaining them & a slow down in traffic at the time. These things were thirsty

  • Great coverage of a classic diesel locomotive!

  • that was f'n awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I _LOVE_ that EMD two stroke diesel music!

  • Nice job! Its rare to chase a DDA40X locomotive.

  • Let alone get one on tape...

  • Thats the only operating one still around.

  • RIght now, it's been use as Business Class for UP touring the lines. It passed by Austin.

  • They were originally equipped with Leslies, but this one has had its S3L replaced with a Nathan K3H. I cant believe UP removed the Leslie from this engine. They were special ordered with them! That chaps my ass & I work for UP...

  • I thought this engine had a Nathan M5 before it got its K3H

  • I'm not sure who put that one, but it has a S-3L now, or at least it did 6 hours ago.

  • It has an S-3L on it now.

  • Perhaps the Leslie bad-ordered and the Nathan was a temp step as it has a Leslie on it again.

  • what speed?

  • thats a beast, in the end how it pulls away

  • i would say fat;)

  • Really great shot there. They're really an awesome piece of machinery.

    Thanks for posting!

  • I wonder what the engineer thought about you pacing him for some time.

  • love it!

  • Where exactly were you pacing this tran? I notice the highway parallels the tracks for quite a ways. Please advise, thank you.

  • this section of track is alomg us hwy 30 between clinton and cedar rapids iowa

  • Does anyone know how many were built, where they were built and how many are left in the UP Fleet.

  • 47 of them were built, 1 is left in action.

  • How fast were you going?

  • right around 70 the whole way

  • Neat to see this giant at speed! It is still the largest (longest) diesel locomotive in the world.

  • The Big Boy of Diesels! Though the original horn should be restored and put back on, there is a video on here with that horn intact

  • Awesome! DD40X's are extremely powerful!!!

  • This is a very powerful diesel locomotive, if not the largest ever

  • Excellent video! I don't think the 6936 goes full notch like this when it visits west of the Sierras, so this is very cool.

  • were they headed up to the minneapolis area i think ive seen it before

  • where is clarence,ia

  • 35 or so miles west of Clinton

  • Why the hell would they put a K-3 on that motor?? It needs a RS-5T or a K5LA or something a little more spactacular than a K-3....

  • The Nathan K3 horn is not bad, but a 5 chimer is more befitting of a giant like this. Those turbocharges also sound sweet when the engineer throttles up.

  • the horn if you look on wikipedia is actually a Leslie S3LR

  • I can never get tired of the musical sound of those 16 cylinder EMD two strokers.

  • What would be even better is a couple of SD45 20 cylinder EMD645s throbbing along the rails. I'm pretty happy with this video, though.

  • Excellant pace shot, * * * * *

  • pmg have fast you going

  • We were bouncing around 70 the whole time.

  • thats fast

  • That sounds like a Cadillac on rails! Wish i could have seen it in action...

  • I love to get laid on that baby!!!!!!!!! 1000 stars!!

  • That loco is a BEAST!!!!!!!!!! That is awesome, 5 stars!!

  • Yum

  • Awsome "When she winds up the turbos"!!!

  • somebody knows something about DDDDP45

  • It's a DDA40X. Two GP40X's on one frame.
