You gotta give the dog some props. Stands there cool as can be on a stage with a live audience and Elvis shouting "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog" to him. He doesn't even flinch. You can tell Elvis liked him too, even if he wasn't too happy with the rest.
Like a rocker Elvis did the worst things, but everyone always tries to exculpate him. He wore tails because he was part of "system". He was a RCA artist. To lay the blame on others is easy. Steve Allen is blamed and Elvis is the saint of the history!.
It was Elvis's right to be embarrassed. But the comments about Steve Allen are overly harsh. Allen was a good guy. Unique among adults at the time, he gave air time to rockers and jazz greats like Miles Davis. In those days, TV was king, and Allen was just trying to be funny in a visual medium. It was a rare misstep for a great, talented guy. By the way, Allen's career did not fizzle. In fact, unlike Elvis, he had a stable and wonderful family life and lived well into his golden years.
years later elvis hated how they made him sing to a dog i was born in 1975 and have been a fan for 23 years i would have given any thing to have been around in those days RIP our beloved elvis u still remain in our hearts
Steve Allen's intent was to humilate Elvis, but it severely backfired. The audience responded to the performance with great enthusiasm and his career continued to skyrocket. Steve Allen's career fizzled just as it should have. Elvis was the consummate professional and made the best of a bad situation. He was spectacular.
Steve Allen should be punished severely for humiliating Elvis like this. Bastard. I guess he was jeolous of Elvis' talent because he certainly had none. Couldn't touch Jack Paar with a 50 foot pole and Johnny Carson was infinitely more talented. Rot in Hell Steve Allen.
he was trying so hard not to shake his hips! It's obvious that he was uncomfortable and it's true what elvis said about HAVING to dance. Standing still just doesn't give the music the same feel.
Elvis was not happy about having to sing to the dog and continued to be embarrassed by the incident years later. It was something Steve Allen, not Elvis, cooked up and Elvis felt it ridiculed him. The dog peed on the chair, for starters, and Elvis didn't feel right wearing tails!

Elvis did everything with integrity even when it came to singing to dog on national TV !

Nice try Allen, but it'll take more than some second rate TV show and a dog in a hat to put a dent in the King's crown!

@motorecka - I read that Scotty Moore said they were all pissed about this and what Steve Allen had done here.
