  • will it blend?

  • the capacitors are the most expensive part here, as for the other hardware you can make one for under 30€. The rails are just steel, and the enclosure is three layers of 5mm perspex.

  • Hey, im wanting to do this for a science fair project at school, if yu can, let me kno all the materials and the cost, I REALLY would appreciate it, thanks.

  • try making 1 that can destroy a tank

  • if you put an insulator on the inner rails, you could construct a carriage that runs on top and the bottom that conducts the current, not sure if this would work but may save your rails, if the only thing to burn up is the brushes.

  • Why do people insist on using stupid music when showing stuff on youtube? No one cares about the music you like. We came to see what you had to show about rail guns. It would have been nice if you spoke during the video explaining what you were showing.

  • if it used magnetism for power how did it generate enough heat to burn that metal

  • @evoldevildogs you dont know much about railguns do you :P ?

railguns use electricity to create a magnetic field in the rails which pulls the projectile forward, but the insane high current between the projectile and rails causes an arcing effect (mini lighting) which vaporizes parts of the rail and projectile

  • the only thing that sucks is the plates keep having to be replaced

  • After 3 and a half minutes, I still don't know anymore about how rail guns work...

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the tube at the end take the backfire plasma to a controlled spot? Instead of the plasma flying everywhere?

  • does this badass music come with every purchase of a rail gun?

  • excuse me...

    what's it named at 1:53??

  • @wind7401 a capacitor

  • Did you ever try using a denser projectile like tungsten carbide so it wouldn't just disintegrate upon firing?

  • would i be correct with the idea that if made large enough these devices could fire objects into space?

  • @TyriaelSoban Not quite, the current largest railgun which was made by the navy can only fire a 7 pound projectile at mach 7 and it uses 33 mega joules of energy. Now a light gas gun of similar size uses hydrogen or helium to propel a object to speeds over mach 20 so that or the super gun invented by Gerald bull would be a better choice or even better yet a rocket woooow cause rockets are definitely less efficient than a 40 billion dollar gun *sarcastic*

  • what is the purpose of the the plastic tube behind the sistem? what does it deliver? (sorry for my english)

  • I guess you are using electron current rather than conventional current in this animation?

  • that's why i prefer coilgun >_< the two rail always got worn out after a couple of use

  • awesome

  • That my friend is badass

  • are these ideas use for trains -can they be slowed and gradualy increased or decreased for strarting and stoping of super fast trains

  • Please upload the schematics for this at Instructibles. com. We'll be glad you did.

  • I need to make something for my final physics project.. This might be it lolol

  • what is soundtrack?

  • @negodyable drifting away from budah bar

  • @DrGreTuLR For your calculations did you use the Lorentz effect when determining the railgun rail length and the size of the magnetic field size? I am an engineer in the state of PA and after watching this video I had some free time in which I built a functional rail gun I am eager to share my data with you, perhaps you may shed some light on material spec as I am only able to fire my railgun a total of 6 times before the arc welding destroys the armatures and the circuit is broken.

  • how many times can you shot...

  • Nicely done, but lose the music. Narration would be better.

  • You can sell it to the Chinese or Indians !!! and make millions

  • 1.More bolts to hold it together.

    2.MORE Capacitors.

    3.MORE CAPACITORS.

    4.???

    5.Profit!!!

  • I would bet some1 50 bucks that rail gun technology came from nikola tesla

  • @ericdalgetty the capacitor bank is to hold a bigger charge then one capacitor therefore shooting it out faster

  • That's pretty impressive that you were able to construct a working railgun just from visual spects. Sure it's not ideal by anymeans, but it's still very impressive to take a concept and make it a reality. Kinda like the Mythbusters.

  • @Randomlynessive Yay! New railgun for every shot ;)

    very effective xD

    Not :D

  • Woa zitte gie in Belgie, an joen accent te zien, zie je lik van 't gentse.

Eje gie da echt me GMAX getekend.

  • It's over 40000 amp!

  • @noelsoong777 That's impossible, Vegeta!

  • heres what i was thinking a rail gun would look like if anyone cares:

It would look like a mini vulcan without the bullets, and there would be two long steel rods on the weapon that would fire electric pulses.

it'd be nice to own a weapon like that

  • whats the PSI of the injector part?? and how big is the projectile??

  • Im thinking about doing a similar thing for my schoolproject. Probably not as strong but something like this... How do you make it shoot it away with such force? What do you use as "ammunition", a normal iron nail or? Doesnt the nail need some kind of charge to fly away?

  • theory? the U.S navy already has a working Rail gun it's just in testing still.

  • @Dogmeat1950 true but it looked pretty damn successful when i saw it fuck some non-biological alien up in transformers

  • @irapekids247 lol. ya...but na.. the U.S Navy has a working rail gun out in Virgina. there is some vids of it on youtube. it fires at mach 8

  • @irapekids247 Wish I could Thumb this shit up like 5 Times ROFL

  • what did you shoot anyway

  • Do you have pdf for this design?

  • @wookie0

No, but i figure the design is simple enough to copy from the animations.

  • @DrGreTuLR what do you juse to discharge? I am going to build one on my one so i want a relatief easy design. are theire some parts missing on the drawing

  • @poweranti16 he used an injector system.. basically he used compressed air to move the projectile INTO the rails completing the circuit... that way a switch does get fused closed by the current ( i have found out that the hard way lol)

  • @DrGreTuLR HI what was those things which u connect the wares(transistors ?) where are the object what will be launched?thank

  • @DrGreTuLR You mean the THEORETICAL acceleration is 100 N/ (4*10^-5 grams)=2500000 m/s^2

ignoring friction on the rail and maybe more importantly once exiting the accelerator, aerodynamic effects which have a greater influence considering the low weight of the projectile and the relatively high speed.

  • is this a dshinghis khan remix?

  • THANKS FOR YOUR PROJECT!!!!!

  • @ericdalgetty

if you use one capacitor u would not get as much energy if you had 10, if u have more energy the round will go faster and do more damage

  • right hand grip rule ftw

  • wooow cool piz can u tell me how to make 1 ........

  • Can someone tell me name of the song pls

    by the way nice vid

  • Can someone tell me name of the song pls

    by the way nice vid

  • whats teh name of teh song pls !!!

    Nice vid like :)

  • whats the name of the song !!!! pls

bye the way nice vid like :D

  • May I know what the background song? Thx in advance.

  • I would like to know the practicality of using a railgun (a different design, but the same theory) to launch a tennis ball (about 50 grams) at 100 m/s. Or even 50 m/s.

  • @kevc015 railguns only shoot electrically conductive objects not tennis balls :P

  • @shadowOrgon Pft, there are ways around that.

  • @kevc015 yeah true but still a 50g object is going to need a ton of energy he's using a 40 MICROgram object lol

  • where did you learn all the electrical theory to do this? did you calculate the amperage, or did you just throw a bunch of capacitors onto a board? (I'm not being a smartass, I'm honestly just asking)

also how long does it take all those capacitors to charge?

  • Is there a solution for the cannon (central part of the rail) not to melt?

  • Hmmmm...Inpressive, i'm going to try to build one.

  • What velocity in m/sec have you attained? We have attained 1200M/sec.

Almost 4,000 FPS gun bois! with 6.4 gram projectile!

    Approx := 4,000 ft/lbs muzzle energy.

Not bad fer garage tinkerers, and NOT considered a firearm until larger projectile used by US LAW

  • Wow, 4000 feet per pound, those units really speak for themselves...

It's also really comforting to know that what I did five years ago is NOT illegal in some other country.

  • @DrGreTuLR O.o, so it's illegal to make a railgun?

  • @jacklby

Illegal...I'm not quite sure about that. I mean technically it's illegal to own an active high explosive without a license. But you can make IED's out of everyday objects. However I'm sure it'd be frowned upon by your neighbors. Doesn't make it illegal though. Just check into it as far as weapon laws you have locally.

  • The MAIN reason for inert gas shield/bath in "barrel" of railgun is because it RAISES the speed of sound relative to the projectile. In other words, the sound barrier is not reached until much higher velocity in helium avoiding nasty shock waves inside "barrel" and allowing for higher velocity, faster. which := more fun!

  • how r the terminals set up?

  • Where are the magnet?

  • it dosen't need any magnets.... The Projectile must only be a good conductor. When the Current flows, it generate a magnetic field...

  • it uses the magnetic field generated by the rails when the current passes through so there is no need for a permanent magnet

  • no gun/waepon could draw enough magnetic force to pull a slug of about 50.cal size unless it was like mounted on an ac130 or tank?

  • yes it can

  • pre charged capacitors with a small electric force to maintain the energy

  • @DJDeepfeel Railguns work on a different principle. Yes a railgun could fire a .50 cal, but it leads to implications with size and RECOIL. A heavy mass accelerated to many times the speed of sound will create quite a lot of back-force. Railguns use a small mass at extremely high speed to create a massive transfer of kinetic energy. If the shot is designed to smoosh on impact, the hit would be devastating to the material it strikes, shattering metal, or completely destroying organic matter.

  • impressive! I'll like to learn more about this. I don't study physics or anything like that but I'm always down with tech. what materials do u need for this?

  • @noze007 well..if ya do..ya might wanna study up a bit so you don't get hit with a couple kv xD cheers.

  • So what was the total discharge into the rails, and what was the charge of the plasma itself?

I mean, I love the design, and the results you've displayed in the description, btu I wanna know more about this beauty.

  • lol i think in a few years or even now we can be seeing like freaking giant balls of sparks shooting in wars xD

  • magnetic field - speed of bullet more than 10 km in second .. it's penetrate front armour and all tank Abrams very, very easy . Nice weapon , but now allmost imposible use this weapon on battlefield. Need giant elekro generator .

  • thats why the navy wants to use them on their ships. You would have all the power you need and if you angled it right, you can fire halfway across the world

  • Are you using a gas system?

  • it's a RAILGUN

  • i know dumbass, but many railguns use gas systems to prevent arc welding of the armature, so shut the fuck up if you dont know what your talking about

  • it's not my fault that you seem incapable of forming a coherent fucking question

  • You're the dumb fuck here. I was asking if he was using a gas system or was simply using the rails. He knew what I was talking about, you obviously don't. Go learn more about railguns before you fucking comment. You are a fucking retard, the armature will arc weld itself if theres too much current, so I was wondering if he had a gas system of Argon or something to move it before the current flows. you dumbass, go swallow three buckets of cum.

  • your last comment makes me think... are you hot for me? i understand now, your subtle hints in your comment. but no i get up in way too many bitches guts to be such a knob gobbler like yourself

  • Go fuck yourself you faggot. I'm not hot for you, and my first comment was coherent in every way if you knew what the fuck your talking about. Go fuck your mom's saggy tits and choke on your dad's salty scrotum.

  • damn you just can't seem to hold yourself back can you. you're a little babbling brook

  • Yeah, because you're the dumb fuck that started this shit because you didn't know what you were talking about, then tried to put the blame on me. So you can take whatever sort of mechanical razor blade dildoes you might have with you, coat them in coco butter, and shove it UP YOUR SELF CENTERED ASS!!!!!!!!! THEN GAG ON IT A BIT AND BARF, THEN DEEP THROAT IT SOME MORE YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE!

  • dude you have some seriously fucked up shit floating around in your head... and i'm detecting notes of homosexuality

  • FUCK YOU IM NOT A HOMO! and i just realized this is reaaalllly fucking off topic.

  • indeed, you denying your homo erotic behavior on youtube is off topic. now, back to the main point. do you not understand how a railgun works?

  • I understand completely how one works, I wanted to know if he was using a gas system to start the projectile acceleration before the current began to flow. I wasn't sure however because I could not see any sort of a gas source in frame.

  • @KittyRokher I think you may be able to help me out. Are you talking about how the projectile gets it's initial directional velocity? This has confused me, and no one explained it yet, call me stupid, but how do you get the projectile to move along a lateral axis like that and/or prevent it from going the direction you DON'T want it to? All I see are the diagrams for vector physics, and I guess it's my prob that I don't understand them, like why they're true =/ Is it the gas start you talk of?

  • Let me try to explain it (I won't use too much jargon or anything). Due to the Lorentz Force, the projectile will always shoot out the opposite end of the current (so whatever side you hook up your power source, it'll move toward the other end.) The gas system is used on larger railguns. Because there can be such a huge current flowing through, it welds it to the rails. However, if you shoot gas down the barrel, thus moving the armature, it reduces the chance of arc welding. If you needmore m me

  • @KittyRokher I'll try googling the Lorentz Force and see if that helps me understand, thanks. I'll harass you probably if I'm still dense after that XD

  • lol, thats fine. I like helping people

  • @KittyRokher Oh, really? I never knew that. What gas do they pump through? Is it just to cool it down or is it a gas that is harder to ionize?

  • @KittyRokher flagged

  • Wow nice. What is this song called and who doese it?

  • Yes, what are you injecting?

  • what does it fire?

  • I would have used symmetrical rails so I could flip them and get some more life out of it.

  • hey plz tell me how work the injection system

  • are there any heat resistant coatings or inserts that could be used that wouldn't diminish the magnet's power? that might be an easy solution to your low melting point problem.

  • すごいw

  • just a question but what is the clear thing on the barrel made from?? oh and do you think Zinc is a good material for the rails or should i get aluminium??

  • the clear plates are plexiglass. The rails are made of iron. Zinc and aluminium have too low melting points, so they will erode too easily

  • @ 3.12 the metal looked like that after just 1 test fire? might need a better metal for the rails

  • 10 shots, read the comments before posting one

  • Railguns suck i got shot by one and it didn't even hurt

  • Did you build it or buy it? If you bought it where did u get it? This is my main problem, I cant figure out how to charge my caps.

  • I used the one from the schol physics lab, you can make your own with 4 diodes though.

  • Hey great vid, I'm building a rail gun right now. What are you using to charge your caps? Also where did u buy the caps you are using? Thanks and once again great job!

  • I used a 380 Volt DC mains rectifier. The capacitors were donated by someone who had them lying around.

  • whats that tube/wire thing thats comes out the back??

  • thats a pressurized air tube to blow the projectile into the rails.

  • Comment removed

  • ... well...

although you have physical calculations, you are over looking physics side of elements itself. Of which material traveling is nearing quantum lvl at some point. Perhaps this may help and perhaps a visit to fluid dynamics will help you with Rail like qualities.

    Hope you catch on

  • if someone come in u can shoot hes balls..

  • btw may i know what capacitor are u using?

  • very detailed and informative, thanks alot for making this video :)

  • they make railgun.... why cant they just make laser.... in future weapons the railgun have clusters..... (i think railgun just uses electricity...they somehow turned it to solid form that can splitting atoms... i guess....)

  • railguns shot metal shots electromagneticaly accelerated at huge speeds.

I think that you mistake it for the "railgun" of quake 3

  • or stick arena...

  • Do your research first. A railgun fires a metal projectile at higher than gunpowder speeds using magnets.

  • From what material are rail and projectil?

  • rails are wrought iron, and the projectile is aluminium.

  • Kudos on the project and way to really do your research. Hope you didn't hurt yourself with it though, that'd really sting.

  • I have a question:

Is it possible to alter the speed at which the projectile comes out by altering the voltage used?

  • yes

  • so the projectile needs to be touching the sides to completely the circuit? wouldn't the voltage weld the whole thing together? or is it that the electricity arcs from the positive side, through the projectile and arcs over from the projectile to the negative?

  • It´s really aawesome, and you can acctually see the energy comming through the wires.

  • the GDI have railguns ask them

  • they are real but they take alot of volts just to fire once

  • what is even more needed is a lot of Curent

  • DrGreTuLR,

    Great 3d presentation!

    Some pointers:

    - maybe slow down the animations a bit and spend some more time on each scene

    - could use some labels, naming

Again great work and thanks for posting!

  • just Russian is a little forvard in this project, than America

  • i never know rail guns were real...just in games......just wondering what was the songs name???

  • Buddha Bar by Faithless

  • Those military lasers are pretty hardcore!.. Look up MTHEL, it can shoot missiles down from the sky with laser.

  • That black soot you are referring to, Is melted rail. With technology like this, a rail platform emits severe heat. Rails need to be constructed from a very high grade titanium to sustain such heats after a "slug" has been discharged. Groundbreaking tech like this is unreal. Good Job on the film. Try and load those capacitors into a rifle somehow. More research needed. :) Good job.

  • it doesnt really matter from which material the rails are forged...

the contact surface is directly converted into a plasma. there isnt any material that can stand these temperatures!....

one way to deal with such a problem is to coat the surface everytime before using it. in this case for example with graphit...

that would reduce the metal abrasion.

    (sacrificial coating)

    nice vid and nice project!

  • Amazing! What plasma?

  • NIce instruction,

you should use higher Voltage up to 600V

    from a fluorescent lamp /from a scanner

  • How long does the rail last?

  • Use higher voltages and make contact with the rails. Piggy back the lower high ampreage with higher voltages via a diode valve. The lightning spark will conduct for you and the rails wont get destructed. Just an I dea that was not tested yet.

  • so send 40KA through an diode? but it would get destructed with such high ampreage...

  • use nails and flat plate in vaccuum. Also possible with vaccum tube. Do you see some possibility?

  • can u get it to shoot metal rods too? Do some damage!!!

  • you can basically put anything you want in front of the plasma, i used small plexiglass cubes.

  • hey, my railgun wasn't fire

    i use 200V 750uF 48J energy and a solder as a projectile

but It wasn't fire, what do you think ? what's the problem ?

    thanks !

  • 48J is a bit on the low side, what size of projectile are ou using?

  • update: my railgun was fired, but I'm not sure that the projecttile(aluminum foils) was moving by Lorrentz Force or by my air pump(projectile injector)

how can I be sure that it fired by the Force not the air pressure ?

btw, it does make a blast in a barrels and some of aluminum got melt down and welded to the rails, but there's no plasma blast out of the barrels, do u think it's because 48J is too small to make that happen ?

    ps. sorry about my english

  • Do a "Hot" shot and a "Cold" shot. Compare the projectile speed with power and without power, both with injector.

48J is very low, and you would need a very efficienct build to get much out of it.

  • what does a railgun shoot???/

ive been trying to make a gauss gun

  • this railgun shoots small plexiglass cubes, though most shots shown here are just aluminium foil without projectile

  • I've a 240v 45millifarad capacitor, would it be enough to make something similar to your one?

  • your setup would give 0.5*0.045*240²=1296Joule. This is over twice the energy stored in my capacitors.

  • are you sure its not mF or microfarad?

  • micro=µ

    milli=m

  • could you use a ceramic or plastic lining to prevent the bearing from welding to the plates
