wow..talk about one sided propaganda from chevy ,,,funny they talk about the brakes having more life then the stang but they dont tell you the chevy uses cheaper bonded [glued] brake material ,and you could get disc brakes on a stang .they point out the chevy doesnt need power steering cuzz it was not optional on the chevy ,,or was a/c or p/b or a 225 or271 hp motor and in 1 year they sold a million of stangs how well did corvair do ?,what car is still in production????
in 1964, my best friends dad had a 1964 Corvair and a new robin's egg blue Mustang. He offered us the choice of either car. We had been driving the Corvair, but hey, a couple of juniors in high school, a Mustang sounded cool. I drove both as my friend did not have a drivers license. We took the Mustang for a week and then asked for the Corvair back. The Mustang was junk, ate gas, and handled poorly.
the falcon was a cool car! when they decided to invent mustang, it was just a falcon renamed and beefed up,,with facny styling,,corvair on the other hand was a far better car in many way,,as this tells the truth about stangs,,they were hyped up pieces of crap! there i said it,, i like all kinds of muscle cars and while stangs had a cool look,,thats all they had,,,clearly corvair is the winner..ralph nader and his smear compain hurt corvair..and thats a sad thing..i love corvair!!! forever>:)~
The only bad thing about the Corvair was the crappy smelly heater...you have to keep the engine compartment absolutely prisitine and the exhuast system 100 per cent sealed or you would smell from fumes after riding in it...I know cuz I have a 69 Corvair which is a great car otherwise...
the mustang beat the pants off the corvair in terms of what folks wanted back then: front-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive and tons o' power!!! sure 'stangs are "cool" and worth a lot of money, but 'vairs are a blast to drive. i've had the good fortune to pilot a 4-spd 289 'stang, 4-spd chevelle ss396 and a '67 hurst his 'n' hers shifta gto (h.o., 360 hp...) and was thrilled. 'vairs are still (imo) more fun to drive than any of these $20K + lust-objects. they're far more interesting.
not only that BUT corvair was a compact fuelefficient car, whereas the mustang is a sporty musclecar. cant compare them. thats like putting a smart fortwo against a dodge viper.
@crossfireplaya Not really, the standard engine in the Mustang was a fairly economical 6 cylinder, most were sold that way.The car itself was based on an economy car as well.A lot of people scoffed at the mustang for being a "secretary's car" that is,stylish outside but only a cheap and poor performer. Carrol Shelby and a few others soon put a stop to that talk though. The fastback mustang looked great as well, but the 2 door 'Vair was at least as good looking, shame emissions did it in.
id like to see any mustang do that. it wont. cuz ford has shiiiittty quality.only reason corvair didnt sell is becuz a fucktard named ralph nader wrote a shotty book saying it has terrible handling. which is untrue. chevy designed the corvair to be a more comfortable car than others so they did swing axle suspension. but only on the first three or four years.then they went to fully independent suspension which eliminated the problems, but the other reason the handling was "bad" was because nobod
@crossfireplaya Ralph Nader did not kill the Corvair.Read the book"Unsafe At Any Speed"by Ralph Nader. Most people to this day blame the book, yet most people never read the book.I read the book and it spoke of problems with several cars including ford and even Volkswagen. It was General Motors over reacting to the comments made about their products. No other company's gave a fuck about the book.GM went on a smear campaign against Ralph Nader,And after it went to court they had a lot of crow to eat.
wow... stang is a cool car and all and sounds pretty badass but, everyone has one... you can find mustangs all over the place. i live in lubbock texas and ive seen at least 3 60s model stangs for sale and a guy down the street from me has one as well.however corvairs are nowhere. my dad bought one 20 years ago and left it sitting for twenty years. guess what? it started and ran. and kept running till my dad stopped pouring gas down the intake ONLY becuz there was a rubber fuel hose that broke
@korranda this comment section is proof of what you said, i mean, yeah, mustangs CAN be faster, sure drop 600 horse power in it and go.. and yeah, there are WAY more of them, BUT, what car is sitting on every corner in little mexico? a mustang with its muffler removed... lmao, corvair has the upperclass feel, what car has always used the flat 6 style engine, umm, porsche 911?
@korranda Let me say this out front- I love the Stangs, always have. That said, the Vairs are phenomenally more advanced cars- the early Mustangs were really just Falcons with fancy sheet metal. Still, it's hard to make up for that V-8 power, despite the Vairs' superior handling and braking.
I raced Vairs for 8 years- if the course was open, the Stangs had the advantage, if there were a lot of turns (esp. tight) it was all CORVAIR!
@dumbamerica i have both the tang will not out stop or out turn the vair my tang is nothing but a falcon corvairs are a lot stronger an very hard to tear up i like my tang but it will not ride as good as any of my vairs
they forgot to mention that the "K" model 289 4 bbl solid lifter stang motor can eat the corvair alive...and that the corvair looks like a limp of sh**...
actually though the corvair does have one real advantage and that is that if the aliens ever come to earth looking for giant turds, the corvair in brown paint is more likely to be selected instantly... lol...stiffer ride ,noisy springs, and able to do
this is funny..the guy forgot to mention you can get disc brakes on the stang..and a/c..and also a 271 hp motor as well ...oh..and the stang had a good heater ,,and at least ford made the option of power steering...and really wasnt needed on the stand but was avaliable anyway ..and what car is still in production????
Comparing the Turbo-Corvair to a 289 2barrel mustang is like comparing apples to oranges. A more realistic comparison would've been a four-carb Corvair and the 289 2-barrel. Even then, that's still not the greatest comparison and Chevy could have and should have done more with the Corvair, but didn't. Criticisms aside, if I had to choose which car I wanted conditions being equal, I'd still go with the 'Vair.
@bicycleguy111 true. a reason why it was featured in a scene from M. Night Shyamalan The Happening in the middle of corn field Found Off Road Deserted. if it was a Camaro Chevelle Corvette Corscia Covair or Chevette (I had good memories with those) or in the case of the Truck Driver a Silverado. you would have seen a dead passengers inside of those. the ones you saw rear ending into the tree trying to commit suicide those were pinto owners they wouldn't be caught dead from suicide in one
mustang is a fancy falcon, lets face the facts! lol

They all seem like advantages in Corvair's favour. It's too bad Corvair was dropped from the Chevrolet lineup at the end of the decade.

I would say re-launch the Corvair but I know they would mess it up. They should produce a rear-engined econosport though.
