  • and for that he was a great president he saw things coming that no other president had like the mess we are in today.. watch the the farwell speech he gave

  • Ike was a good President

  • "One great step for mankind? He must have watched the moon landing a little closer than most?? "

  • "You're a hero, even if you fight against your own illness??"

  • His worst mistake was promising Earl Warren the first Supreme Court nomination after he became president, unfortunately it was the chief justice opening that came up first.

  • Ike died on my 21st birthday.

  • he was America's dullest and most anal president.

  • @atfatw I don't know what yo mean by anal. He was a practical President, not an ideologue. What was sacred to him was a balanced budget.

  • @RichardElden Bay of pigs was actually a plan by the CIA which was under Eisenhower's control and Cuban Missle Crisis was pretty much a stalemate

  • @RichardElden You are so fuckin stupid.

  • @RichardElden Dude no it was not! is was the large chunk of the GDR population fleeing to west germany unchallenged. Most young people and scientists, just people in general were leaving. Kruschev wanted to help his commie ally and stop the hemorage of economic resources, so the wall was built. It would have Happened under Nixon, or anyone in 1961.

  • @TheNewFrontier1960 And doing nothing about the wall was one of the best things kennedy could have done bc it prevented war

  • I definitely remember this. I was only 11 when this happened. Later that night, my family and I went to a drive-in movie.

  • @RichardElden I was, of course, being sarcastic. But I've come to the conclusion that no one could harbor such beliefs, no one's morals could be so corrupt and backward. You're a troll looking for a fight. The New Frontier has yet to be explored, we all have to work together to realize what Kennedy stood and worked for. Even you. And uhh, i did some stalking. You're from the UK so...

  • The NBC News anchor is David Brinkley.

  • @RichardElden oh, yep you're right. What was I thinking?

  • 7 heart attacks!! holy shit!

  • did I hear that right he had 7 heart attacks?? damn they say 3 and thats it wow

  • @retroguy1976 7 heart attacks is nothing. Dick Cheney has had about 17.

  • @supercreamysperm .. at a time.

  • @retroguy1976 Ike had a strong constitution. I guess he did all the right things

    after the World-War II.

  • i like the video from 1958 better

  • doesn't obama look like a pygmy compared to a guy like this?

  • @andrelebaron The man was a giant among Giants and pretty much is one of the few people who can safely lay claim to stopping the Nazi threat for ever compared to him most modern presidents look small

  • @andrelebaron ALL of Ike`s SUCKsessors (spelled that way on purpose), Obama and Reagan included, are pygmies compared to him.

  • @wde325 cept jfk

  • @RichardElden actually when Nixon was in Sadat kicked the Russians out of Egypt. That's hardly moving closer to the USSR.

  • In my youth, I considered Adlai Stevenson the finest man in American politics. As I've aged, I now know that this country did the right thing by sending Ike to the White House. His achievements as General, President, and world leader says it all.

  • @phtevlin

As someone born in the 90's, I can not exactly comprehend the exact circumstances of the 50's, but I appreciate your honesty and great change of heart.

Adlai Stevenson joins other Democrats, such as Lewis Cass and Samuel Tilden, who were deeply loved by their supporters, and came very close to winning the Presidency, but ultimately failed.

  • RIP Ike/ thanks for military industrial complex warning/RON PAUL 2012

  • .. Yes, the current EvilBushie-run Republican Party would boot a decent man like Eisenhower out of it... the EvilBushies didn't even like him back in the day, but voted for him because he could end the long run of Dem presidents...

.. Eisenhower, the last decent Republican president... every one after him was 'w'orse than the one before...

  • Ike had the military industrial elite down pat...he warned of their undue influence...he was so right....

  • @kevinherbert and global warming freaks as well.

  • "The general's fatal illness began 13 days ago. Congestive Heart Failure that means simply that his heart gave out on him.........

Astonishing that's what happens when the heart......uh......fails.

    LMFAO!! XDD

  • @RichardElden Actually it was promising Earl Warren his first appointment seat on the Supreme Court, he should have said an associate seat. As far as Egypt, Ike would have to invent Facebook.

  • About 4 Men died in the 1960's: John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr, Robert F. Kennedy, And Dwight D. Eisenhower.

  • While i tend to favor Democratics policies on the national level, i most certainly would have voted for Eisenhower both in '52 and '56, if i was alive then. He was a good man, and no suprise he was incredibly popular throughout his whole term.

  • compare what's in the white house now to ike, the national hero. is there anyone out there now who could get back our country's greatness? maybe gen. petraeus

  • We need more men like Ike.

  • A good and decent man. He would have no place in today's hate-filled Republican Party.

  • @grindlbebe Well said.. great comment. I could see myself voting GOP more often if they had more pols like IKE. The idiots that put up now makes Nixon look like a liberal.

  • If Ike was around today, he wouldn't recognize the Republican Party. He would be considered a liberal by Republican Tea Party standards. He reached out to blacks in regards to civil rights issues. He received 40% of the black vote. A Republican can only dream about getting that percent of the black vote.

  • @RichardElden ??? This is just garbage lol.

France and England invaded Egypt w/o Eisenhower's consent, and Eisenhower forced them to withdraw. He pretty much saved the Suez Crisis.

Back on topic. Eisenhower is a very underrated American president; most people only know him as the WW2 general. He was probably the 2nd or 3rd best president in the 20th century, after only Franklin Roosevelt. Economy was strong, and he dealt with the Cold War the right way.

  • @PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD I think he was better than FDR. I use the Interstate every day and am extremely benefited by it. I truly believe we wouldn't have had a Cuban Missile Crisis or Vietnam if he were in power. I would say he was the best President ever after Lincoln.

  • After Kennedy died, his portrait replaced Benjamin Franklin on the half dollar. And after Eisenhower died, his portrait was featured on the then new dollar coin. In recent years, various presidents have been featured on the dollar coin. I'm not sure if this included Lincoln (penny), Jefferson (nickel), Roosevelt (dime), Washington (quarter) and the aforementioned Kennedy and Eisenhower. :-/

  • @GBOY69GAY Only 1 million NAZI scum ? I would have done better... Teams of leather bikini clad Russian Lesbians slitting the throats of the animals while having sex with them one after another after another until the rest were driven mad and begged to slit their own wrists.

  • Eisenhower was the last great statesman President of the United States. I wish future presidents could be worthy enough to simply stand in his shadow.

  • NBC reporter Douglas Kiker would suffer a fatal heart attack himself in 1991, at the young age of 61.

  • Here is the best newscaster in the business~!

  • Source: James Bacque's OTHER LOSSES

Correction: The German soldiers were classified as Disarmed Enemy Forces, not "combatants."

Note that the Red Cross was forbidden to visit these former German troops, and they died by the hundreds of thousands of starvation, thirst, exposure and disease.

  • Comment removed

  • I was born during Eisenhower's presidency. Being of German-American background, Pennsylvania Dutch specifically, I must say that Eisenhower was guilty of crimes against humanity. After the surrender of German forces across Europe, Eisenhower had the German soldiers rounded up, put into camps, classified not as POWs but as combatants, so they would not be under the protection of the Geneva Convention. Let it be known that he gave orders to starve almost a million captive Germans to death.

  • @Fersomling Let it ALSO....be known that the GREAT....President Eisenhower and formal General of the ALLIED.....Army may have done what you say, BUT.....let it ALSO....be known of the 6 MILLION....INNOCENT.....Jewish people that needlessly died under German poop stain Hitler and NO.....German stopped it. I will take a President Eisenhower over a carpet muncher Hitler anytime. I am ALSO....of German decent. And I am ASHAMED.....at what the German dogs did to so many innocent people.

  • @hotforxx a lot of Germans tried to stop him. The July 20th plot is a good example of that.

  • @Fersomling good.

  • @Lewistyle10 : Go tell that to your rabbi.

  • @Fersomling But I'm christian? I'm a little German too. Doesn't mean I take back what I said..I'm glad he made those Nazis suffer. They deserved it.

  • @Fersomling You're Amish? Please say hello to Harrison Ford for me, will you?

  • @Fersomling: I dont feel sorry for the Nazis he killed. In fact, i'm glad he killed them. The only reason you dont like that is because you have German ancestors. But does that really matter? No. You are an American, not a German. If you believe you are a German, go back to Germany.

  • @athabascka : You may have your facts wrong. Most German soldiers of the Third Reich were NOT nazis; indeed, most of the German people during the Third Reich were NOT nazis, although they could have been, had they chosen such. Check it out. Learn history, then get back to me.

  • The 2 people who give thumbs down are communist.

  • @royaladam No. they are neocon assholes.

  • I still Like Ike

  • @skunkworks226 I do, too.

  • Interesting how they referred to him as Gen. Eisenhower and not President Eisenhower. Just noting.

  • he is my cousin who has such a brave and strong heart rip dwight my cousin!

  • I was just watching an early color video of Ike and he was talking about how technology was advancing and how situations now (the late 50's) required an instantaneous response as opposed to having weeks to mull them over. Imagine if he lived to today! He would have been overwhelmed by the instantaneous nature of today's society.

  • @supernuke He was never overwhelmed by anything during his life so I doubt 2010 would have done so.

  • @Kram6298 I meant no disrespect. I was just talking about his initial reaction might have been that.

  • Eisenhower was the last decent republican president

  • I am always amazed at how he preferred to be called "general", as opposed to "President", after he left office.

  • Actually, most generals turned president have mediocre to disastrous presidencies, the worst being Franklin Pierce. In this regard, Eisenhower was an exception. Eisenhower's warning about the military industrial complex provided inspiration for Oliver Stone's film "JFK".

  • @forexrobots212 JFK was a horrible movie. Oliver Stone used misinformation to convince millions of Americans that Kennedy wasn't killed by Oswald. I don't know about you but if I got millions of people to believe a complete lie by blatantly lying I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

  • @rclv428 I'm no fan of Oliver Stone. Whether has was trying to get people to believe a lie or just trying to sell movie tickets only he can say. But Eisenhower did give a warning about the military industrial complex. Whether that warning became a reality is for another discussion.

  • All the way with Adlai!

  • 7 heart attacks, a stroke and a variety of surgeries! He was a one man army.

  • @wrestlingluva In europe, just the mention of his name, it struck the nazis like a sledge hammer,

  • God bless Ike, just remember you always rally before you die.

  • Ike was a great American and a great president

  • He was an OK president built the high way system and had a so called dime store new deal. Not a great president but definately a good president.

  • Eisenhower would have been a major name in history either as a General or as President.

As both, he was one of the "giants" of 20th-Century America.

  • Mindspring- how would have Mac gotten us into a nuclear war? China did not have the Bomb. USSR did in very limited numbers and no real delivery capability in the early 1950s. Besides- Stalin was not going to risk a Nuke war with the USA. As it was Ike did what Mac suggested- threaten the use of nukes- that finally ended the Korean War. ( or shall I say- truce).

  • Real bad day there

  • This was probably an NBC News Special Report that aired a short time after Eisenhower's death was announced.

  • eisenhower wasn't going down easy

  • one of the greatest general who ever lived!......He command the greatest invasion armada ever assembled in history that lead to the liberation of western Europe from Nazi Germany occupation during world war 2!

  • @bebupalula Eisenhower's genius, and significant contribution to the war effort, was his ability to hold the Supreme Allied Command together. Holding the Americans, the British, and the Russians together was not easy, but he did, and someone else in that position might not have done as well. For a military commander on the field, however, my vote is for George Patton.

  • A great man who warned us of what we are living with today...

    He is missed..

  • @CastAway421 His major blunder was appointing Earl Warren to the Supreme Court. In his words, "the biggest damn fool mistake I ever made."

  • a true american ... forever remembered

  • he certainly kept the alliance together which smashed germany, was a true republican, not exactly conservative but neither liberal. he indeed warned us of the military industrial complex, but seemed unable to stop it.

  • @cheomire During the war, it was not known whether he was a Democrat or a Republican, or whether he had any political inclinations at all. In fact, after the war, Democrats actively sought to nominate him to the Presidency. It was only then that he revealed he was a "Kansas Republican."

  • He smoked 4 packs a day.

  • I wish we had the likes of IKE or MAC as President today.

  • @paratrooper629 If you mean MacArthur, he would have been an unmitigated disaster. Probably would have gotten us into a nuclear war with China.

  • @mindspring57 But if he had his way in the 1950s, China might not be the power it is today, and definitely not a nuclear power. So no chance for a nuclear war.

  • Eisenhower was a fantastic president and a fantastic person.

  • rruecast, I hate to rain on your parade but we real Americans really don't care what the rest of the world thinks about one of America's greatest presidents. He forced the USSR into an arms race that it couldn't afford and we finally broke the back of the Evil Empire. I know, I was a Lieutenant commanding tanks on the East German border during the Cold War. Reagan was a genius!

  • NBC routinely reused video tape in the 1960s. This is a kinescope. This was originally in color. They didn't realize the historic value....if they cared at the time.

  • Even so, this was a rather important event and they should have kept a videotape of the broadcast. They've been using tape since 1958, but mostly for entertainment purposes. thank goodness all the JFK assassination coverage is still preserved on videotape.

  • @catholicpriest1: This IS a videotape...this copy is from the Vanderbilt University archive (their off-air recordings of all three nightly newscasts basically saved the bacon of NBC News many times in the Eighties and Nineties when they had to get footage for its own documentaries; ABC's pre-1972 record for keeping old newscasts isn't spectacular either)

  • Eisenhower is the best president!!!

    other are scum!

  • @SunCelticSea You are an idiot.

  • @SunCelticSea Eisenhower is up there with the good presidents.

  • why does every one hate obama all hes doing is trying to help the nation the best he can you should have faith in him.why are you all turning this great presidents death into something inapropriate and racist.

  • Is it at all possible that many people disagree with the direction Obama is taking the country???

  • Faith in God is what I have, not faith in any man, President or not.

  • Eisenhower was the last great Republican president, JFK the last good Democrat who would have been great. It's all been downhill since then, as we have entered a new Dark Ages. There are no statesmen anymore. Once men such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Grover Cleveland and Calvin Coolidge walked the earth.

  • Calvin Coolidge caused the depression in 1929. Even though Hoover was president when it happened, it was the result of Coolidges actions. He`s a joke. I can`t believe you think he`s a statesman

  • Eisenhower was a man who believed in service to his nation and understood the gravity of his actions. After giving the order for the go on D-Day he went into his room to pray. Reagan was a draft dodger who frankly didn't care who lived or died. Ike's policies kept the nation reasonably stable; Reagan's policies launched this nation on the out of control economic spiral that continues to this day.

  • dam this black and white is so rare and this guy is a legend president. rip Eisenhower.

  • No the Eisenhower is the hero of the millions of jews who were being killed by those so-called " 800,000 German prisoners". If you were a Hitler supporter you're no "Prisoner". Barab, thanks for lowering America's reputation even more with your Liberal remarks. Im sure Patton would've taken the pleasure in kicking your coward-Liberal ass.

  • 6 million jews were murdered... don't forget that

  • You are a piece of work. Quite the words for a FREE man! Count your blessings.

  • The Huntley/Brinkley Report 3/28/69

  • i bet you are fantastic in bed....

  • Eisenhower warned us of the military-industrial complex and that's what we got. He was a real Republican, not like the corrupt idiots we have now.

  • Eisenhower warned of the military industrial complex, but he did not hesitate to feed it.

He kept Patton on a leash in order to placate Churchill, who wanted to keep Montgomery from losing face. He set the stage for Vietnam, which was a war between corrupt factions that we had no business involving ourselves in.

  • Eisenhower himself was a little Liberal on his ideology here and there, but yes he wasa Republican I cannot argu that. But the man who exceeds Eisenhower's greatness is Reagan. But I wouldn't put Eisenhower down as he was the Commander of WW2.

  • @annikee59 In 1947, the Republican-controlled Congress, insanely jealous of FDR, proposed the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, limiting the President to two terms. It was ratified in 1951. The Republicans really shot themselves in the foot, because Eisenhower could have been elected to a third term if he had wanted it and if it had been legally possible. Other Republicans barred from a third term were Nixon, Reagan, and George W. Bush. Only one Democrat (Clinton) has been barred.

  • @annikee59 No way Eisenhower wrote those lines. He doubtless had very good speech writers.

  • @annikee59 I totally agree,He was the last of the Real American Heroes

  • @annikee59

???..........true but not in fact. Do your homework again.

  • @annikee59 the world agrees with him on that one

  • a great man more than anyone will ever know

  • oh I'm sorry. Did he not give you welfare?

  • naw brotha my family aint poor

  • Another FOOLish statement... 'I aint Po' I justy ignorant'...

  • Are you trying to be a stereotype? Are you Trying to Be Racist? or are you stupid (though that applys to the other 2). You cannot compare Barack Obama to General Eisenhower, Eisenhower was millitary genious, the orchestrater of D-Day. Yet, Dispite this, he achieved something very few presidents have, he presided over a time of peace. He spread highways across this great lands, he DID help with the intergration of African Americans. All Obama has done is double our debt.

  • i aint got nothin against him i kno wut da hell he did....no i aint racist i got a white best friend and NO he doesnt act black...he as white as they come....yea he helped us niggaz integrate here but dats all....he aint stop us from bein killed every fuckin day....JFK and Lyndon B. Johnson had to stop dat shit...and dat wuz afta MLK wuz killed

  • oni, you might want to turn that double into triple xD

Obama is no known as the biggest spending president!

  • President Obama had no other choice. Don`t forget president Bush who turned a surplus into a deficit, and doubled the national debt.

  • Just Integrated the schools with Military Force (Little Rock) and not only Put Earl Warren on the Bench, but put into force Brown vs. Board of Education and the Fruits of Brown... Good God Man, think or read or do something before you speak, YOU MAKE EVERYONE LOOK LIKE DAMN FOOLS!

  • a great politician. At the funeral, Louis Mountbadden of Burma was Montys representative

  • He gave the Germans unforgettable lesson.

  • "General of the Army ... 34th President of the United States" ... such an intro.

  • @EMPERORMIKI In many ways, being a general was more important than being a president. As a general, Ike could vanquish evil (Nazis), while as president he was restrained in what he could do (nuclear age/cold war).

  • Mesmeridium, Eisenhower by 1968-1969 had a severely weakened heart. Now, had a pre 1955 Eisenhower had bypass surgery coupled with antihypertensives and Cholesterol medications, hell he may have made it to 90!

  • Eisenhower was the best president.

  • speak english much?

  • hell naw i dont speak all dat much proper....im an african-american/hispanic american

  • No shit...

  • Eisenhower might have been saved today. Congestive heart failure treatments, even those outside of a transplant, are far more sophisticated in scope in the 21st century than in 1969. Surgical technology in this area was in its infancy then - even the first successful heart transplant was only the previous year.

Since Eisenhower's was not a sudden failure, it makes all the more likely he could have been successfully treated by today's methods several months before he worsened.

  • Wow guys you guys should be happy for eisenhower. If he did not end the war we may be all dead from Germany and japans atomic bombs.

  • Grow up. War is Hell. If you live long enough you may get to learn that first hand.

  • The only 2 republicans I like are

    1. Ike for ending the Korien war and prohib the Selective Servies from drafting marred cupples and college students.

    2. Nixon (execpt for the watergate scandel) for ending the Vienam war and the draft and easing communest agresson,

  • What about Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt? Both republicans and on Mount Rushmore

  • For some reason I always imagined General Eisenhower as a bit like Colonel Potter from M*A*S*H. Don't accuse me of blasphemy please lol. I just seem to see Eisenhower's personality as similar to Harry Morgan's character. Army hardened, tough but also caring. A decent man.

  • Wow!

  • Died peacefully.Unlike the 1.8 million German pow's after the war that he starved to death.I'f you want to talk about a great man talk about Jesus.

  • They don't make them like Ike anymore.

  • Good general, mediocre president.
