I adore this. Yes she does a lot of vocal runs but unlike most of the time, I don't think she oversung the song. Mariah, who popularized melima, is one of the few singers who actually knows when to use melisma/ vocal runs and they fit the moments and melodically makes total sense. This is actually one of her songs I feel really emotional when I hear it. Sounds corny but I do. Some people abuse melisma and are aaaall over the place but not Mariah imo. She has an amazing ear for melody.

I HATE singers like mariah carey. People who try to do too much with a song. If you listen to the original Journey version it's so much more, you can feel Perry's emotions in his voice. Yeah ok i may have gone a bit over the top, but still i don't care how much you love this song no cover of open arms can match Steve Perrys version for raw emotion. And i'm afraid that Mariah Careys version doesn't contain emotion many people think it does but it's NOT EMOTION it's just warbling. Beautiful songs are often the simplest because raw emotion only comes through when humanity is at its weakest, so as long as Mariah Carey is trying too hard it just will never really have emotion.
