@Uglyknees Maybe? Basically the joke is that the first guy has apparently been marking notches to keep track of whenever Jeff Winger (hence, "classic 'wingers'") says a clever line. The next guy marks a notch when abs are mentioned. So, we expect the next guy to also mark notches keeping track of some sort of recurring conversational thing, but it turns out he's just marking notches for the sake of notches. It's silly because he's keeping track of how many notches he has made by carving notches.

i started a notch tally on a desk in the library at my school and the other day, my friend and i were adding to it when the librarian came over and asked us what we were doing. we were all prepared to get a lecture on damaging school property (which, to be fair, we technically were doing) but she just looked at it and said, "oh community. that show is so funny" and walked away. was it the best thing ever? yes, yes it was.
