  • RIP Gunpei Yokoi

  • ...

  • ...

  • go yokoi, go yokoi!!!!!

  • im so jealous of you :) you actually got to meet him and shake the legend's hand

  • R.I.P gunpei

  • ack i forgot how they switch first and last names my mistake (edit R.I.P yokoi)

  • Tetris Attack is one of my all-time favorite games. Too bad I have nobody to play with!

  • Great Man, Great Work!!

  • Thank you Mr. Gunpei Yokoi-san your one of the people who made the 80s so much fun. I still have my Donkey Kong Game and Watch, to this day.

  • a real shame nintendo kicked his ass out only because of the virtual boy disaster. he put nintendo on the map with his game and watch designs that became the norm for the entire video game market up till today (d-pad controller). he was responsible for the biggest succesess in nintendo's history like the game boy and only because one of his many ideas did not work out he was kicked out? truly a great designer. Samus Aran is one hell of a well designed character that stood the test of time.

  • It was only because some fucks felt that the Virtual Boy was a failure and didn't support it thus making it a failure. Forever live his legacy. I will dedicate my channel video to him.

  • Nintendo dont kick out Yokoi san, that was a honor decision that he made.

Loving memory, we miss you Yokoi San.

  • Yokoi quit after being treated like an outcast. BigN did everything to kick his as out.

  • long live his legacy

  • Cool

  • thank you for the video, your lucky to have met him. 'lengendary' is fitting ^-^ btw metroid trilogy i can't wait, i still love the prime games just as much :D

  • What song is this playing in the video? It's very hypnotic. Also I had no idea there was a Mach Rider toy!

  • I'm Crying =(

He is one of the fathers of Video-Games

Father of a good Childhood (The Mine at least... what would be without Our SAMUS ARAN??)

    Father of many new worlds

    WE LOVE YOU, GUNPEI YOKOI!!!

  • I was mainly familiar with Gunpei because he helped create my favorite game series, Metroid.

If I am not mistaken, your youtube user picture is of you and Gunpei?

  • @JohnnyGameGuy - Yes, that's correct. My user picture was taken on the second day of E3 1995 after playing a few rounds of Tetris Attack with Mr. Yokoi ^_^ Yes, the Metroid series is lovely. Are you planning to buy the upcoming "Metroid Prime Trilogy" for the Wii ?

  • You know it man! I never played Echoes nor Corruption so the Trilogy release for wii will be a great opportunity for me to play them.

I loved metroid prime 1 but I am more of a fan of the 2d metroid games.

At the time I am posting this comment it's 30 minutes until the nintendo press conference starts. I really hope we see a new metroid announcement! *fingers crossed*

  • What??? you played Tetris Attack with Yokoi???

I have something to ask you... was he good at it? haha.

Good video, thanks for sharing =)

  • One of the greatest people, ever walked on earth.

He bringed us so much entertaiment and changed gaming completetly!

  • He's the man! Our childhood will never be the same without him.. Its so sad to hear about his death... :( RIP Mr. Gunpei...

  • In a car accident, no less.

  • Any suspicions about his death? He develops nintendo's only real console failure, then defected to a different company to develop a rival handheld to the game boy. He's dead a year after resigning?

  • *face palm

  • The Father of Game Boy.

  • A brilliant man. I love his work.

  • What meeting Gunpei Yokoi like?

It must have been really awesome...

  • Yeah... R.I.P mate...

  • Gumpei Yokoi. THE MAN. I made a school work abou he and his awesomenes. He made so many great games. Metroid, and Super were just MASTER PIECES. But anyway, you should try his last master piece, Fire Emblem 4, the game is the most dramatic game for the SNES and a hell of a story line, to don't go into details, incest is not rare in FE4. Emulate it whit a patch if you must, it's the last master piece of mister Gumpei after all.

  • he was a master in the games , for me the best game is super metroid , is very incredible the surprises and the clues that it leave us , i like his job , i hope that never forget to him.

  • This is awesome man. I love your channel and how you have it setup. Simply amazing you got to meet this man, this legend I should say. To get to shake his hand and get his autograph must be incredible. I'm glad there are so many people like you out there who appreciate Gunpeis accomplishments.

  • You MET him?! Oh my god...that is beyond friggen awesome, that is off the friggen charts.

  • Rest in Peace Mr. Yokoi, I have much respect for you!

  • RIP Gunpei, Yokoi. You were probably Nintendo's biggest contributor to success (there's also Miyamoto who is fantastic but even he learned off you). If only he saw how his creations evolved to this day, I'm sure he would be proud.

  • Yesterday was his death date.

  • Rest In Peace, Gunpei Yokoi-sama, I will always miss you and I'll always honor your projects and masterpeieces

  • Gumpei Yokoi a good man indeed Rest In Peace...

    Thanks. Good video

  • This man created the Wii! Iwata used his philosophy of using old technology in new ways and now look how well the Wii is selling!?

This guy was a legend. Nuff said.

  • Well put, he was truly brilliant. He had amazing foresight as well. His philosophy was that the majority of people would go for fun, affordable consoles/games over flashy, expensive ones. This philosophy obviously holds true to this day what with the Wii and DS.

  • If he saw how his creations have turned out to be today, he would be proud. :'( R.I.P Mr. Yokoi.

  • that's why nintendo abandoned kid icarus because Gunpei isn't around anymore

  • I really believe Nintendo hasn't abandoned Kid Icarus. I think they're testing the demand for "Pit" by throwing him in Super Smash Bros Brawl. And you must not forget - the Metroid series, the Gameboy incarnations and philosophy have continued years after Mr. Yokoi's death. So who knows ... Sooner or later its bound to happen.

  • A truly remarkable and inspirational man. You can tell he was passionate about his work.

  • Beautiful, magnific, touching.

  • Thank you very much, Agus!

    We all miss him :)

  • beatiful, simple, and novel. just the kind of movie gunpei would have respected. R.I.P Gunpei Yokoi. Fly higher than kid acarus to eternal peace and happiness.

  • Thanks Andy,

Your comment meant alot to me. I wish I had more footage of him to show you guys. Especially on the third day of E3 - when I versed him on a few rounds of Tetris Attack. But my friend wasn't with me that day at the Nintendo booth and I didn't want to come off like a stalker with a video camera - lol

  • You met him?! Wow your lucky...

    RIP Gunpei

  • Thank you! thank you! thank you! for this video Grooveraider, you're awesome. This is the first time I've ever seen Gunpei Yokoi on video. You're so lucky to have met him and shook his hand, did he say anything to you?

I was wondering if you have a video of Virtual Boy Mario Land that was at the show? I'd love to see that or anything VB-related.

  • Yeah I get that alot. There really isn't any footage of this wonderful man and wonder why that is. Mr. Miyamoto kicks ass and all but even he learned off of Mr. Yokoi. Its a shame how Nintendo continues to ignore Mr. Yokoi's hardcore fans.

As I remember but i'm parapharsing, Mr. Yokoi's told his interpreter that it was flattering to ask for his signature. And that he enjoys what he does and that's to make children happy.

  • it would be cool if they made "new super mario land" in memory of gunpei yokoi

  • I believe I do have some more VB clips especially the VB Mario Land clip. I'll have it up here very soon. Hang in there and thanks for watching :)

  • You're entitled to your own opinion. I enjoy my VB unit w/ 13 games. I know people who bitched and moan about the Gameboy not having a backlit screen and it wasn't in color for years. But it didn't stop sales. Even the competitors rolled out their color portable systems and still failed against Gameboy. The Virtual Boy was going in a similar direction as the GB but I think the price of the system really hurt its chances and the "red" complaints didn't help either. But the 3-D was awesome!

  • Nice tribute. I wish he was still here. It makes me wonder what other creativity he might've given to future generations, and now :(
