Wow, that guy at around 3 minutes is clueless. In the late 19th century (not "late 1800s", that's like 1806-1809) and early 20th century, there were just a lot of voters in the South who would sooner vote for a yellow dog than for a Republican (basically at this time the Democrats were using what is now the Republicans' "Southern Strategy", plus Southerners were still sore about their failed secession and Lincoln was a Republican). The blue dog paintings were in like the 1980s.
