I've been in my own personal Mordor, mentally. I know exactly how Frodo feels all throughout RotK; this scene in particular makes me grateful that I have a Galadriel-like friend who helped me to find a way out of the dark places in my mind.
@bluephoenix52 So i have, and His name is Jesus. I know how that sounds and that many people dont believe In God, but still, He is the friend that is always there for us. People should get over their pride. After all the chances for everything to be by coincidence are like 1/∞ ...and if so (we're all here and so perfectly made by nobody, by a coincidence) then everything is meaningless...
@Esa4525 On the Complete Recordings of Return of the King, this track is called "Shelob's Lair". The theme that starts as soon as Frodo sees Galadriel is also her theme from Fellowship of the Ring, when the Fellowship is in Lothlorien. Hope that helps.
To be honest, when I first saw this scene, I thought Galadriel was just a trick on Frodo's mind and that she was actually either Shelob, a Troll, or and Orc in reality trying to ambush him.
I absolutely adore this scene. Cate Blanchett is my favourite actress, and Galadriel is my favourite character. I'm so thrilled that Cate will play Galadriel in "The Hobbit" (yes, it's announced on her page on IMDB). Bless you all!
this scene is so trippy. I did not read the books as a kid as I thought they would be stupid. :( but I watched the films in reverse order (longer story) and was blown away. especially by this scene. anyone who's been at the end of their rope knows what I mean.
What means by that is....Galadriel is representing especially in this scene as a VIrgin MAry...She comes to help him...Just like virgin mary would appear to people ...well the chosen ones to warn them of catastrohes and not losing hope and all that....i hope thats what telemacus meant...lol i tried
There's a "Virgin Mary" in almost every religion there is, just as in legends and folklore... this scene is no more catholic methaphysical than my sandwhich.
@kirikagure Tolkien was a hardcore catholic, he modeled Galadriel after the virgin mary. The reason she appears like this in the lotr movies is because of that!
@SAOrules Alright, let's play. Tolkien has stated that he drew some inspriation for Galadriel from the Catholic imagination and idea of Mary, but he also pointed out that there were key differences between the two (Galadriel, for example, is penitent) and G was also an active presence in many confrontations and had been made wise from long ages, mistakes and her own ambition. Mary's s.c. wisdom arose from innocence and noted for her maternal and virginal features. Letter 143, the connection was-
@SAOrules -pointed out by a reader and in Letter 320, Tolkien is very vague and unsure from where the inspiration came from. I suggest reading Catherine Madsen's "Light from an Invisible Lamp - Natural Religion in The Lord of the Rings".

Don't even compare the so-called Virgin Mary to Galadriel. The sheer badassery of this woman is beyond any religious figure.

When she pulls him up, it was the first time I had seen the face of God as a woman....interpret that as you like.

This scene is particularly evocative of Tolkien's implicit Catholic metaphysic.

if you'll look into it deeper you'll find that he has had more of his inspiration from ancient pagan beliefs and norse gods
