You know what? I was a goth in the mid 80's when Goth was at it's peak, and WE ALL HAD A LAUGH! We were never serious like the goths today, we didn't want to be vampires (ok, being a little stereotypical there maybe) we just liked the music and the look and left it at that. Ok, the whole Goth subculture is not about being a non-conformist. It began from the decline of punk in the UK. Bands like Bauhaus and Siouxsie and the Banshees started playing a darker and gloomier type of music which became known as 'Gothic Rock'.

The Goths most of you are familiar with are the Hottopic shoppers. These kids are not Goths, despite what they may think. Bands like Slipknot, Korn, and Marilyn Manson are not Goth. 'Mall-goths' dont even know the history of the Goth subculture. Actual Goths just like to be left alone and are usually morbid. And Goths dont always wear black.

It never ceases to amaze me when people consider preferance in popular shopping locations consitutes a lack of creativity or intellect. Technically speaking, taking on any kind of title for oneself ("goth", "emo", "gangstah", "slut") is "conforming" to a role. The ironic dichotomy of the goths is that most of them claim to be free thinkers and are quick to label others as "conformists" when by adhering to a culture or sub-culture in itself is the act of conforming.

I also think it's interesting how goths can't seem to understand the importance in belonging. No man (or woman) is an island, everyone likes to share time in the company of others (unless your a misanthrope); conformity and sameness is a natural part of being human. Of course there's something to be said about loosing one's identity by drowning it in another, that part of goth philosophy I agree with, but goths seem to take it to a harsh extreme.

A real "goth" wouldn't even go by such a title, if they're the real deal anyway. I actually think any goth who openly admits to following the philosophy, yet isn't so tethered by it that they use their own common sense and logic to evolve and move their group forward intellectually is the alpha-goth.
