@skydog46 Thanks for the quick response! You were getting a KILLER tone here! I have a Tom Holmes set in my LP Standard, and they are fantastic, but I am setting up another LP for this type of Peter Green tone. Disregarding the actual PAF pickups you have played, what make of humbuckers would you recommend above any other? Thanks a lot for your input...awesome playing and tone!
I've always love that almost nasal sound of Peter Greens guitar. The way he would have it nice and thin and then worm it up in a long bend with a volume tweak. This mode you have here is bang on. Great job and nice touch as well love it.
No matter how many people mod their guitars to have that Peter Green sound NO ONE AND I MEAN NO ONE can make it sound like Greeny did. Not even Gary Moore who had Peter"s magic guitar.
Beautiful! I don't know what everyone else is talking about; but this guy is one of the VERY FEW Gibson Historic owners who can actually play. Forget about the camera. If you were there while this video was recorded you would be creaming over the tone.
I though the Peter Green guitar had the nexk pickup the wrong way round so it is out of phase, this guitar looks like a normal les paul apart from the bridge cover has been removed. ;os. Sounds sweet though and nicely played.
Yes, You are absolutely right, but you can achieve the 'out of phase tone' by reversing the ground with the hot wire when soldering to the switch, or pot!
Right....I forgot....If I want to practice just like Green did....what is my note limit?...See these are the things I need to know....good thing there's experienced guitarists around to tell me this stuff. Thanks dude!!!!
How does the mod work then? Can you get the normal humbucking sound out of the back pickup too? I have a couple of Historics and would love to get the PG tone, but was told since it doesn't have 4 wires I couldn't, any suggestions? I don't want to install new pickups in it though. Thanks.Great playing too.
MAM,I think you can still have all worlds(neck, bridge, both and out of phase with both on)Do you know a real good tech?I have a push/pull pot that lets me switch in/out of phase.I saw David Hidalgo of Los Lobos doing that on a song called Mas e Mas.Good luck,Dan
Lots of ways of getting two pickups out of phase. Peter Green got it by accident when the magnet of one pickup was flipped either at the factory or while the pickup was repaired. I will usually have a push/pull pot do the deed for me so I can get the best of both worlds. It's a very nasal tone that's sounds best with the pickups in series to replace the volume loss.. Of course I have a second switch to put the pickups in series or in parallel too.
I thought the peter green mod was flipping the neck humbucker so the screws are on the bridge side. Then when you flip it to the middle you get this awesome out of phase tone.
jimmy page my ass, that is SRV all the way including that signatrure riff of SRV at 0:21, nice tone with a les paul, w/e kinda of amp that it looks like a mesa
Signature riff? Its a blues turnaround. Anyway, I think they were commenting on the out of phase tone sounded a little Pagey like since his guitar has a push pull pot for out of phase playing.
You can get the PG sound with cheaper pickups and a couple of pull pots for series parallel and phase effects, or you can mess around with your pickups and possibly wreck them.
PG had the same sound with a Strat, so a lot of it is down to the guy and his amp (orange i believe).
what was the exact mod, because I'm about to buy the 60 classic (97) off my friend and the only thing I was worried was that the stock 496R/500T were gonna have to much of a modern "metal" tone and I'm huge on vintage tone, so if ya could help me out I'd appericiate it because that tone is KILLER!
have you simply flipped the magnet round in one of the p/u? peter green is king!
its funny how you can link all the brit players with there fave american originals,
ie, Green - BB King Clapton - Albert King
obviously ther is more to there pallet then jus these guys but i doubt they wud argue with me wen i say these are amoungst there faves. did i mention Peter Green is king?
Nicely played! Ya talking about pickup screws? IMO, if they're all basically the same the only ones that need worrying about are the G and B (that wisdom comes from Joe Walsh). Same goes for intonation, if the G or B are out it'll sound like shit.

Early '90s Classics are great value & feel like 'real American' guitars. Mine sounds halfway like a 335 it's so light. Nice playing skydog.

you skydog nice playing man,
how do you rate the 1960 classics compared with a standard?

skydog46 3 years ago
I thought the peter green mod was flipping the neck humbucker so the screws are on the bridge side. Then when you flip it to the middle you get this awesome out of phase tone.
Evilcutter24 3 years ago
the out of phase tone is from the magnet being flipped within the pick-up,
peter greens whole humbucker was the wrong way around like you describe, but its the way the magnet is facing that matters.
