Did the narrator say they are drilling holes to drain water away to reduce the chance of the tree decaying inside? When you drill holes in ancient trees you are actually doing more harm and reduce its longevity, because the borer actually carries decay causing organisms across the sound rings hastening its demise. Ancient trees in Israel as elsewhere are a habitat for all kinds of specialised insects that only exist on very old decayed wood; spraying with insecticide decimates ancient colonies.
