Anyone considering a Siberian Husky as a pet should know a few simple facts about the breed.

1. They need to run....and run...and run. Any Siberian Husky who's not getting at least 2 hours of that kind of exercise a day is going to be an unhappy dog.

2. They're the most brilliant of escape artists.

3. They can be very aloof. Don't expect them to be as affectionate as a labrador.

4. They have a strong prey drive. Ours would hunt bids, rabbits, raccoons, house cats...successfully.

@WingChunGeologist YOU ARE RIGHT!! My Husky was an escape artist (digger)!! So I got him a playmate - a cute female Husky!! 2 days later - they BOTH escaped under the fence!! Bad influence!! So I "dog proofed" the fence using 3 foot tall chicken wire ($36 for 100 ft) bent it at 90degrees at 1 foot - put the 1 foot part OUTSIDE the fence - the 2 foot part laying down at the botton of the INSIDE of the fence - covered by grass!!! THERE IS NO ESCAPE!!! Now he catches birds!!!

@alucardaj It can be called phishing in a way because it was misleading and didn't have anything to do with the title. It wasn't trying to get personal information. The title is bringing people to the video with the intent to show "Dog Training" content. But it didn't. nedded41 has gained a view and therefore has taken something I was not willing to give unless the content was what the title had suggested. Therefore it is phishing (but not for passwords/credit cards/etc). Still phishing though!!

If anyone is thinking about buying a Siberian Husky, please read some books. They have certain needs. I have two wonderful Huskys. They can be a pain in the ass to train. If anyone does want to buy a husky check the blood lines of the parents. Or check out some shelters. The people that work there should have info to help you put. Great pics!!! Good post

@miesha480 BE VERY STERN!!!! DO NOT HIT THE DOG!!!!! Grab the Husky's nose - force him to look at you -eye to eye!!! Say in a stern loud voice - "NO!" Then walk away. This will take several iterations - but he'll get the message - when he bites - you walk away from him!!! And NEVER play with the dog at this time - you do not want him to learn to play AFTER he bites your clothes!!! Also change his diet - chewing is NOT NORMAL - it is a lack of vitamins!!!!

@Earthlinked Growing Dogs specialy pups do need to chew in order for their jaw muscles to grow properly. So a toy like a tough rubber Kong would be ideal.

Excesive Chewing though you are right it could be lack of Vitamnins etc

@miesha480 Don't worry to much. My German Shepherds where the same when they where pups. You need to teach them the word No as Earthlinked said. But you have to make sure from a very early age that they know you are their leader. If they bite you Push them away and say No in a stern voice. But do NOT hit your dogs though as that will make them nervouse and cause behavioural problems. Try turning them away from you and saying NO! Distract them from biting you.

@miesha480 Also make sure that as soon as they stop biting you give them a toy to play with, when they start to play with the toy then praise them up. Once the desirable behaviour has been achieved. My Big Dogs are 6 and 7 now and have no problems what so ever.

@beagle9singer Make sure you do plenty of research and are prepared to have a nordic. I've had plenty of dogs, and the two I have now are huskies. I love them dearly, but they have very different needs compared to other breeds (tend to wander if off the leash but NEED lots of exercise, shed abundantly, need a true pack leader...) I don't want to discourage you. I just want you and your puppy to be a good fit for eachother and happy!

igot a husky as a gift he is having trouble house training he knows go to bed, sit, lay down,shake at 5 months old. how long will it take to house brake him?i take him out 5 times a day but he will hold it in his crate for 6 hours. if he goes on the floor we take him out right after he finishes cuz if we try to move him he just walks and pees, any sugestions? i bought him a treadmill to run on and he loves to run on it because i live in florida and most of the time during the summer its to hot.

I did it all like you... from my expirience, whatever you do, he'll still do it in the house until he's 7 months old or so. People who I know and who also have huskeys lived through all that and their dogs stoped around the same time.

@killkayla You may already be doing this, but what worked with my dog was catching him redhanded. If your dog pees on the floor and after you scold him, he probably won't understand why you're unhappy. If you manage to catch him in the act and say, "No!" just once, and still take him out, he'll start to correlate. Also, it sounds nuts, but congratulate him every time he pees outside. "Gooooood boy!" like you're talking to a baby. My boy was perfectly house broken at 4 months.

Pretty to look at, Sibes are rough to own. They constantly challenge your dominance, they're picky eaters, escape artists, bath-phobes, don't like being brushed (& NEED reg. brushing), destroy your property amazingly (I had one that ate 2 sofas,as a pup!), need to be leashed at all times (unless in a fenced encl.), and more. They bore easily = TROUBLE!!!! If you want one, get TWO; much easier (HAHAHAHAHA! Never easy) than one. They're large, strong dogs, and STUBBORN.

If you get a Husky don't let them loose outside or if they stay in a fenced yard keep an eye on them. My girl Ada started climbing the fence at 1yr old and she went missing soon after. I think someone stole her, because she always came back when she got out.

The AKC standard for Siberian Huskies is to have two brown eyes, two blue eyes, or one brown and one blue. Any husky can have any combination of those.
