actually the testudo was used in close quarter combat, but only when the barbarians were charging RIGHT at them, but the phalanx ruins mobility and usually didn't work well in open terrain. Unless you have many units

Romans where probably the ones who where the best at war, not the fighting it self, but preparation and strategy. Of course they where good at fighting as well, but not the best. Awesome video by the way!

@Bidmartinlo What you are saying is maybe that the Romans where more strategical and Tactical, but not the "best fighters" and therefore won their battles. That might be because the Gauls and Germans allowed themselves more room for individual combatry, and because they more than often where stronger than their opponents because of individual strength and normal barbaric way of life, rather than packed formations in which the Greek nations and Romans where so efficient at.

The greeks did not use scutum shields they used the Hoplon shield hence Hoplites it was round and big used to overlap other shields for the Phalanx

The 'scutum' shield was not taken off any designs other than Roman ones. Each have adapted with different styles i.e. the shield 'wall' with overlapped circular shields. Designed so you stab your weapon from above down on your enemy, the romans had their's..shield went up covering the soldier completely and the sword went up through the belly and up under the ribs. The kite shield later on provided protection from this and styles changed again. adapt i guess..
