I think it's funny that you mention the object wasn't seen until the footage was reviewed later; however, you can clearly here someone in the video ask, "What is that thing?". Also, why would anyone zoom in on an arbitrary area of the skyline? There was nothing there BUT the red sphere!
Looking east towards the gherkin from soho rules out it being the sun, but living in london I think a giant red ball over the city would have had people rushing to the windows by the million. I think it's a red light somewhere in the office being picked up out of focus by what is essentially a cheap lens.
That's an interesting theory. However, I think a laser would produce a much smaller dot and a much brighter reflection. If you truly believe that is what a red laser pen would have this effect, why not try it yourself and post the video to prove your theory?
I tried this experiment myself with a standard red (635 nm or 650 nm) laser pointer with a standard power output (1 mW to 100 mW). A red laser reflecting on a glass window produces a very small dot which is extremely bright and shiny. It looks nothing like my video. Unless I see evidence to the contrary, I believe we can safely reject the "laser hoax" hypothesis.

Hi c4you. Did you post any other footage of the red ball - especially from another angle? I've seen that the other 2 are not off the ball.
Reason I ask is that it looks like this was taken from inside an office (through a pane of glass) and may well be a reflection of some light from inside the office (which makes sense if it wasn't visible to the naked eye at the time).
It was taken through an office window. So were the other clips without the red anomaly. When I say it wasn'rt visible at the time, I mean it didn't even show up in the view finder - it was only visible only in the recorded video and I only noticed later.

I NEED to know what this was. The Sun was setting behind me (correct) over my right shoulder. .The 'Video length' on my phone is set to 'For picture message' hence the clip length. I didn't see the red ball until later when I looked at the clip. I then went back and recorded MANY more clips until it dissapeared (3 days).

No, you don't have to take my word for it. If you think this is the Sun, you can find out for yourself with 100% certainty. The Sun follows a precise pre-determined path through the sky. You can determine its position in any skyline at any given time. The Sun can never be seen in this part of the sky.

Its the moon! - check it out on google or youtube - the full moon was it's closest to the earth (called perigee) on 12th december and was amazing - I'm in China and it was exactly like this. It look red because of the atmosphere/smog towards the horizon.
That's a good theory, but I can confirm it was NOT the Moon. The Moon was visible at the same time; it was higher in relation to the horizon than the red ball you see in the video, and further south, and it was white as is normal in London.
Question to "created4you", were you in a lift when you shot the video? I ask, because I note the object disappears as it is covered by some metallic barrier just before the video ends. That indicates that object is NOT a reflection of a bulb / lampshade in a building. It looks like you were descending inside an external lift on the side of a building. Or maybe you just lowered the Camera phone. You definitely caught something very odd indeed, methinks.
Your observations are good, but allow me to assist you with your conclusions. I was standing in a meeting room in which one of the walls is glass. I was not in a lift. You noted downward movement at the end of the clip, but this is simply me starting to put the camera (my phone) away after recording what I thought was a normal view of this famous skyline.
I forgot to mention in my previous reply that the "metallic" thing that you observe obscuring the red ball at the end of the clip is in fact a metal bar or rail located outside the window, it's part of the external structure of the building.
For what it's worth, it took me only 10 seconds to deduce that is NOT the Sun! The clouds in that location would have been stained red if it was. The sky above is blue. The lighter clouds above are clearly being lit up by THE SUN at a much higher elevation. And all this before I spotted the 2nd video of the same location, taken the following day at the same. Showing the Sun somewhere else in the sky. A red Sun Dog? A Laser beam? Unlikely. I'm not sure what it is. But I am curious. Disturbing.

1) its not the sun, i mean you can see how low it is in the sky so if it was the sun it'd be a lot darker, i think you'll find it's the reflection of the light shade thats in the room they're in reflecting in the window
It would be more scientific to base your conclusions on a review of my other videos, rather than the username alone. As you can see, over a long period I have produced only a very small number of videos - all of which are normal clips from a mobile phone - until this one.
The Sun Dog or Halo type phenomena are good theories. It's entirely possible These phenomena are amazing and not really explained -- scientists have theories but are unable to reproduce the effect.
its well known that gasses from polution cause many annomoulous efects in the atmosphere around the sun, moon and can cause some very beautiful sunsets. Unfortunate to see a beautiful sunset and be reminded of all the polution, but a fact as it is.
On December 9 it was a sphere which did not change shape or move. When I recorded it again on December 10 it was like a cloud and it did change shape and it was moving around a bit.
It wasn't the Sun. It looks like the Sun in so far as it is a luminous disc in the sky. The Sun is a different size and does not appear in this part of the sky. a meteorological phenomenon such as a "fireball" or Ball Lightning (search YouTube for that) or a Will-o'-the-wisp would be a more likely explanation for this Unidentified Flying Object (UFO).
That's an interesting theory! I won't rule-out your explanation, because I don't have a better one yet! As an amateur astronomer I am aware of the gegenschein effect (German for "counter glow") which can be observed 180 degrees around from the Sun in a "very dark" sky. I've never seen it. All I will say is that it was less than 180 degrees (about half that I'd estimate) and in the full daylight of early-afternoon. But perhaps it could well be some related effect...
I'll take one more minute to explain so this can be put to rest and you can all find something better to do with your time. This is a version of the "Gegenschein" probably caused by smog or otherwise abnormal particle conditions in the air where the sun RAYS converge (the sun being behind you should have been your first clue) at the ANTI-SOLAR POINT! If you don't believe me, go look it up. Nothing mysterious at all, BIT rare, but not really.

I know, thanks. So many comments from day 1 suggested that it is the Sun, believe me if I could have panned to show the Sun and the anomaly in the same clip I would have. But if anybody doubts that this was not the Sun, the path of the Sun each day, as with all major celestial bodies, follows an exact path that is easy to verify for anybody who doubts what I say.
I've never seen a baloon like this. But it sounds like you haven't seen the other videos I posted in the Video Responses on this page. It also sounds like you haven't read the description or previous comments. I've never seen a baloon this bright, let alone one that is as diffuse as a cloud and can divide into two and recombine again.
neither. The time is about 2:30 PM. The sun is behind me. If in doubt, these are famous landmarks and it would be easy to verify the path of the Sun in relation to the skyline seen in these videos.
The comments from most people here have implied that I'm dishonest or stupid. I felt this was unexplained and worthy of further investigation. On Thursday night I decided to try better recording equipment and send details to the Meteorological Office, the Metropolitan Police, the Ministry of Defence. I couldn't sleep that night. I disagree. I have no need to prove where the Sun is or is not because the parh of the Sun is pre-defined and can be verified with 100% certainty by anybody who cares enough to do so. I can't pan to the Sun from this viewpoint because it's behind me and behind the building as previously stated. I have posted a separate clip showing where the Sun is for reference to address previous "it;'s the Sun" comments. I don't know what it is, but it's not the Sun.

This suggestion has already been made and addressed. If you had read my description and follow-up videos and previous comments you would be aware that my phone is in fact full of videos of this, recorded over a three day period. I have posted another video. The length of each individual clip is limited by the camera phone which stops recording after a few seconds to allow clips to fit into multimedia messages.

I won't reject any theory because I can't explain it. However, personally I would disagree that it looks like a reflection, though sometimes it does glint somewhat like a reflection might. Also, you'll see in my videos of the same scene with the same camera at different times the anomaly is not always present, an observation which would be inconsistent with your reflection hypothesis. Perhaps somebody else could try reproducing this with the same camera, if it is a reflection, which I doubt.
Through this experience I've learned something about the society I live in. There's a lamentable automatic assumption that something extraordinary must have a mundane explanation. This assumption is pathological, because it makes people disinterested and inhibits further invastigation. Even my own friends and family are either disinterested or skeptical, it's almost like a bad dream where nobody sees the potential significance of something except for you. I never claimed it was extraterrestrial.
I've given up on this now. Whatever it was, it has either gone or is no longer visible to my camera just as it was never visible to the naked eye. It was there for three full days, but as far as I know during that time nobody else even tried to confirm my observations. I emailed the video to national and London newspapers and to the BBC and received no replies. If I see something like this again I'll keep it to myself. I thought it was amazing. I certainly can't explain it.
It's not the Moon. The moon was in that half of the sky, but much higher and perfectly white in colour as normal. Also, the moon is visible to the naked eye, but this was not.

Four days after I noticed a big bright red blob floating in the sky over London, invisible to the human eye, the phenonemon is still there. I can only see it through the video camera on my phone (Sony C902).

I noticed something very interesting in one of the videos I recorded of the same view the following day. See my "normal cloud" Video Response above - 1358 GMT on Wednesday, 10 December 2008. I thought the red disc had dissapeared when I first made this video. But look closely. Near to where the red orb appeared the previous day, there is what looks like a normal cloud. As the camera pans right the bright red disc suddenly appears or blinks "on" like a lightbulb within or behind the cloud!
It's only visible for a second because the cloud is quickly out of the frame. The cloud may have a slight pink/red colour. This reminded me of a news story from October when a very unusual pink cloud sparked widespread UFO reports with pictures featured on the front page of newspapers in London and inside some national newspapers and online - search Google for "London pink cloud" or "London pink cloud UFO".
The red ball is still there today! It has been there intermittently for 3 days now, moving slightly. It's invisible to the eye, but appears in videos I record with my phone. Sometimes it dissapears and then from what looks like a normal cloud (slightly pink) suddenly this bright red sphere blinks for a moment then dissapears. Looking closely at all of the videos I recorded, there is also a hint of a barely-visible verticle pillar coming down from the sky nearby (to the left). Weird.
I searched YouTube for "extrana luminosidad" as you suggested. I see that unexplained luminous phenomena are quite common. In the first video in the search results, which had that exact title, I see what looks like an identical phenomenon behind the scaffold of the building.
Your name is created 4 you are you sure you didn't make this with software. The object appears to strobe as you go from left to right and when you focus in the direction of it the object doesn't strobe. Strange. Was the strobing an effect to catch the eye. I could be wrong but usually I am not.
If you review my other videos you'll see that I haven[t made many but over a long period of time I've produced nothing but a few normal mobile phone videos. That was my intention in this case but I now want to find an explanation for the bright red ball. It appears above London's tallest building, so it's certainly in the air.
It's hard to glean the size and distance, but assuming it's not far behind the buildings it may be at least the size of a hot air balloon or perhaps bigger. I've never seen a baloon lit so brightly before, it's bright in daylight. I wouldn't rule out a balloon, but it doesn'rt look like any balloon I've ever seen. It was there the following day too but even harder to see, and looked like a cloud most of the time.

If anybody has a picture of video of whatever was seen in Bonnybridge it would be interesting to compare. If it's a natural phenonemon, perhaps it could explain the famous "Winged Disc of Ra" so frequently observed in ancient Egyptian art and religion.
This is NOT the Sun. It's impossible for the Sun to be in the position where the red ball appears in this video. The Sun follows a pre-defined path from east to west through the southern sky each day. I zoomed in to get a good view of the landmark buildings on the skyline. The camera makes everything look smaller but has a zoom feature. I wanted the Gherkin building to be as clear as possible and in the centre of the shot. I hope I understood your question correctly. Is that the explanation you were asking for?
In the video it's obvious that we're looking toward the east. It's unmistakeable. This is one of the most famous skylines in the world. Some of the most famous buildings in London are present. It's easy to locate them on a map or see them for yourself if in doubt. You can see the "Gherkin" (the building nearest the red ball) and Tower 42 (the tallest bulding in London) is to its left which means we're looking eastward.
This is NOT the sun. Its the eastern skyline. When the video was recorded (yesterday at 1424 GMT) the Sun was very much in the south (and slightly west) and much higher. The Sun is above Nelsons Column when viewed from the same location.
Today at the same time I will record more videos and some photos and respond here to show the same skyline at the same time of day for comparison. I will also post a Video Response showing where the Sun actually is at this time of day at this time of year.

Its the moon! - check it out on google or youtube - the full moon was it's closest to the earth (called perigee) on 12th december and was amazing - I'm in China and it was exactly like this. It look red because of the atmosphere/smog towards the horizon.

That's a good theory, but I can confirm it was NOT the Moon. The Moon was visible at the same time; it was higher in relation to the horizon than the red ball you see in the video, and further south, and it was white as is normal in London.

Question to "created4you", were you in a lift when you shot the video? I ask, because I note the object disappears as it is covered by some metallic barrier just before the video ends. That indicates that object is NOT a reflection of a bulb / lampshade in a building. It looks like you were descending inside an external lift on the side of a building. Or maybe you just lowered the Camera phone. You definitely caught something very odd indeed, methinks.

Your observations are good, but allow me to assist you with your conclusions. I was standing in a meeting room in which one of the walls is glass. I was not in a lift. You noted downward movement at the end of the clip, but this is simply me starting to put the camera (my phone) away after recording what I thought was a normal view of this famous skyline.

I forgot to mention in my previous reply that the "metallic" thing that you observe obscuring the red ball at the end of the clip is in fact a metal bar or rail located outside the window, it's part of the external structure of the building.

For what it's worth, it took me only 10 seconds to deduce that is NOT the Sun! The clouds in that location would have been stained red if it was. The sky above is blue. The lighter clouds above are clearly being lit up by THE SUN at a much higher elevation. And all this before I spotted the 2nd video of the same location, taken the following day at the same. Showing the Sun somewhere else in the sky. A red Sun Dog? A Laser beam? Unlikely. I'm not sure what it is. But I am curious. Disturbing.

On December 9 it was a sphere which did not change shape or move. When I recorded it again on December 10 it was like a cloud and it did change shape and it was moving around a bit.

It wasn't the Sun. It looks like the Sun in so far as it is a luminous disc in the sky. The Sun is a different size and does not appear in this part of the sky. a meteorological phenomenon such as a "fireball" or Ball Lightning (search YouTube for that) or a Will-o'-the-wisp would be a more likely explanation for this Unidentified Flying Object (UFO).

That's an interesting theory! I won't rule-out your explanation, because I don't have a better one yet! As an amateur astronomer I am aware of the gegenschein effect (German for "counter glow") which can be observed 180 degrees around from the Sun in a "very dark" sky. I've never seen it. All I will say is that it was less than 180 degrees (about half that I'd estimate) and in the full daylight of early-afternoon. But perhaps it could well be some related effect...

I'll take one more minute to explain so this can be put to rest and you can all find something better to do with your time. This is a version of the "Gegenschein" probably caused by smog or otherwise abnormal particle conditions in the air where the sun RAYS converge (the sun being behind you should have been your first clue) at the ANTI-SOLAR POINT! If you don't believe me, go look it up. Nothing mysterious at all, BIT rare, but not really.
Get a life guys. Specially the "ITS FAKE" crowd.

The comments from most people here have implied that I'm dishonest or stupid. I felt this was unexplained and worthy of further investigation. On Thursday night I decided to try better recording equipment and send details to the Meteorological Office, the Metropolitan Police, the Ministry of Defence. I couldn't sleep that night. My wife couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. Nobody seems to show any interest for more than about 1 minute. Why don't people want to know what this is?

I disagree. I have no need to prove where the Sun is or is not because the parh of the Sun is pre-defined and can be verified with 100% certainty by anybody who cares enough to do so. I can't pan to the Sun from this viewpoint because it's behind me and behind the building as previously stated. I have posted a separate clip showing where the Sun is for reference to address previous "it;'s the Sun" comments. I don't know what it is, but it's not the Sun.

This suggestion has already been made and addressed. If you had read my description and follow-up videos and previous comments you would be aware that my phone is in fact full of videos of this, recorded over a three day period. I have posted another video. The length of each individual clip is limited by the camera phone which stops recording after a few seconds to allow clips to fit into multimedia messages.

I won't reject any theory because I can't explain it. However, personally I would disagree that it looks like a reflection, though sometimes it does glint somewhat like a reflection might. Also, you'll see in my videos of the same scene with the same camera at different times the anomaly is not always present, an observation which would be inconsistent with your reflection hypothesis. Perhaps somebody else could try reproducing this with the same camera, if it is a reflection, which I doubt.

I've given up on this now. Whatever it was, it has either gone or is no longer visible to my camera just as it was never visible to the naked eye. It was there for three full days, but as far as I know during that time nobody else even tried to confirm my observations. I emailed the video to national and London newspapers and to the BBC and received no replies. If I see something like this again I'll keep it to myself. I thought it was amazing. I certainly can't explain it.

It's not the Moon. The moon was in that half of the sky, but much higher and perfectly white in colour as normal. Also, the moon is visible to the naked eye, but this was not.

Nokia N95 has a RED LED in the front near the lens that is on when recording, this is simply the reflection on the window glass...
I know this for a fact because I had trouble covering that red LED when I wanted to film from a high rise in Vegas

I noticed something very interesting in one of the videos I recorded of the same view the following day. See my "normal cloud" Video Response above - 1358 GMT on Wednesday, 10 December 2008. I thought the red disc had dissapeared when I first made this video. But look closely. Near to where the red orb appeared the previous day, there is what looks like a normal cloud. As the camera pans right the bright red disc suddenly appears or blinks "on" like a lightbulb within or behind the cloud!

It's only visible for a second because the cloud is quickly out of the frame. The cloud may have a slight pink/red colour. This reminded me of a news story from October when a very unusual pink cloud sparked widespread UFO reports with pictures featured on the front page of newspapers in London and inside some national newspapers and online - search Google for "London pink cloud" or "London pink cloud UFO".

The red ball is still there today! It has been there intermittently for 3 days now, moving slightly. It's invisible to the eye, but appears in videos I record with my phone. Sometimes it dissapears and then from what looks like a normal cloud (slightly pink) suddenly this bright red sphere blinks for a moment then dissapears. Looking closely at all of the videos I recorded, there is also a hint of a barely-visible verticle pillar coming down from the sky nearby (to the left). Weird.

I searched YouTube for "extrana luminosidad" as you suggested. I see that unexplained luminous phenomena are quite common. In the first video in the search results, which had that exact title, I see what looks like an identical phenomenon behind the scaffold of the building.

It's hard to glean the size and distance, but assuming it's not far behind the buildings it may be at least the size of a hot air balloon or perhaps bigger. I've never seen a baloon lit so brightly before, it's bright in daylight. I wouldn't rule out a balloon, but it doesn'rt look like any balloon I've ever seen. It was there the following day too but even harder to see, and looked like a cloud most of the time.

This is NOT the Sun. Please refer to the Video Responses which I have posted (above) to show (1) the same view at the same time the next day and (2) the position of the sun at the same time the next day. It's impossible for the Sun to be in the position where the red ball appears in this video. The Sun follows a pre-defined path from east to west through the southern sky each day. If in dount, check the position of the red ball and the Sun's path in relation to the famous buildings in the video!

I zoomed in to get a good view of the landmark buildings on the skyline. The camera makes everything look smaller but has a zoom feature. I wanted the Gherkin building to be as clear as possible and in the centre of the shot. I hope I understood your question correctly. Is that the explanation you were asking for?

In the video it's obvious that we're looking toward the east. It's unmistakeable. This is one of the most famous skylines in the world. Some of the most famous buildings in London are present. It's easy to locate them on a map or see them for yourself if in doubt. You can see the "Gherkin" (the building nearest the red ball) and Tower 42 (the tallest bulding in London) is to its left which means we're looking eastward.

This is NOT the sun. Its the eastern skyline. When the video was recorded (yesterday at 1424 GMT) the Sun was very much in the south (and slightly west) and much higher. The Sun is above Nelsons Column when viewed from the same location.
Today at the same time I will record more videos and some photos and respond here to show the same skyline at the same time of day for comparison. I will also post a Video Response showing where the Sun actually is at this time of day at this time of year.
