The 5-cylinder engine was developed by volvo in the early 1990is. Co-developed by renault, mostly in Skövde in sweden. Audi 5-cylinder engines was developed to the Quattro and the engine was put out of use when volvo started to use them.

Audi has now again realised that 5-cylinders are the best engines. Re-introduced in Audi TT-RS 2010'

I had no idea that Renault had anything to do with Volvos IL5s. The Audi-engines were put out of some reason, not just because that Volvo used IL5s.

They had none wath so ever to do with renault. The 5cylinder actually was developed out of the Volvo's R6. This R6 was Co-developed back in the early 90's, almost the same time they started thinking about the 5cylinder. Almost identical with the 6cylinder, seems like the just cut of a cylinder(but they didnt of course, but pretty close). The only relationship Volvo have had with renault was with the 2.7L V6 made in the 80's, this engine was in 262 and 264 and in some Renaults and in some Peugot

Thanks McTw1st-perhaps fuel pressure is a start and I would bet the computer would need some tweeking as well.Anyway for now I go with the cheap gas and boost octane with a few gallons of e85 to a full tank. seems to be a good ratio.thanks.

This volvo definitely rips,however I put ethanol in my 98 v70 turbo and it ran like crap/if I use more than 50% ratio /about 15%ratio is ok it seems. The higher the ratio the less power,my experience anyway.

u need to increse the fuel pressure if u wanna run on E :) cant remember what u needed to do more for 100% Ethanol :/

does ethanol allow you to rev the engine higher? or is that because you have a t-5 or R model. i have s70 glt with lpt(low pressure turbo) with an automatic, and an 850 glt/non turbo, that is a manual, and it seems that my engines work best between 2500rpms, and 5500 rpms. just wondering.

@Eastsidegeorgiaboy, Some hardcore tuners mod their cars to a higher rev band but the reason why your LPT and NA 850 will not rev as freely as this is due to the turbo on the T5. Even though you have a LPT on your S70 it will not rev as freely as the HPT T5. The more turbo pressure you have the faster the revs will climb.

Look again... Volvo just reworks GM designs. They do build them themselves though, but most of them are part GM.

lol ..Volvo is owned by Ford, not GM. And the 5-cyl volvo engines are volvo's own design (off the modular inline 6 co-developed by Porsche)

and pre-dates Ford's purchase of volvo by many years. Even now after many years of Ford ownership all Volvo engines are in-house design except the odd Diesel in europe and the Yamaha V8.

Ok, tell me what GMmotor volvo has taken parts or ideas from when they where building the 5 cylindre 2.3liter turbo engine? Volvo where swedish at the time 850 was build. Ford has volvo engines in there ST models. I as a swedish volvo owner can tell you that there isn't a single piece of GM in the volvo 850 engine.Why would they use american parts or ideas? Volvo whould never dothat because there wasn't even one american engine that forfuild the demands they have on fuel economy and environment.

wow, that is not only racist but ignorant as well. Having personally fully rebuilt my engine I can guarantee you that none of it comes from GM. (Especially) not even the design. Americans take 7 litres to produce what Europeans can in 3.5 (or by this vid, 2.3L), n/a or not.
