We called Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Zeppelin heavy metal back in the seventies. Ppl these days dont realise that you couldn't hear this stuff on radio back then - at least not where I lived. AC/DC was probably the loudest thing they would play, so by comparison, the heavy rock of DP etc WAS considered heavy metal. (Not that AC/DC weren't pretty HM themselves).
1993 tour...worst tour they ever did. Bad tensions on stage, resulted in bad performances. Ritchie was childish and unpredictable, and played uninteresting. Ian was often drunk which resulted in him forgetting the lyrics. Jon, Ian and Lord did the best they could to keep it up. Kudos to them for that. I saw them both in 1993 w. Blackmore, and 1994 with Satriani, and the gig with Satch was the best. He put 110% into the performance, something Blackmore hadn't done on a DP concert since 1985.
@SilverTounge85 Hi Silver. I know what you mean, but the '88 tour was really good - both Gillan and Blackmore were on the case. I only know from tapes, mind you! But the atmosphere was much better than in '93.
@SilverTounge85 "1993 tour...worst tour they ever did." SAY WHAT????? The 1993 tour was by far the best since MKII 1973. Blackmores hate for Gillan only made him go on stage each night to blow the rest of the band off stage, and that made them do their absolute best. The band was really great during the 37 shows they did, but Gillan couldn't quite follow up. He did some great shows, but he also did some really poor shows. Blackmore was at his absolute best since the 70s!
@IHIKML I say it, many fans say it, the band says it. Yes, they played a few fantastic gigs, like the Stuttgart one for incance, but the majority of the tour was just tragic. Two of the most important Deep Purple members couldn't put their differences aside for the fans unfortunatly. The last few gigs was great apparently, as Ritchie wanted to leave with his musical integrity in hand, which is understandable, if you listen to how he played often Live, in the 80's.
@IHIKML This is coming from a big Ritchie, Gillan and Purple fan actually. :) Believe it or not. You are allowed to think otherwise, at least we can agree on that they did some great gigs that was at least documented, like the Stuttgart gig for instance. The interaction between Gillan and Blackmore that we at least had some of in 1984-85, and a little bit of in 1987-88, was nearly completly gone. I agree Ritchie's mood tuned into his guitar, and played some great stuff.
Very heavy metal. My favorite album is Deep Purple in Rock. The cover shows their faces carved into Mount Rushmore. Too bad ther wasn't more room on that rock too add them guys in...
acctually thats a gd point i read in classic rock an interview with purple and it said they dont want to be classed as a classic rock band even tho its what they used to be and its fear enough because the ammont of music deep purple have made and most of it is all diffrent genres look at the diffrence between things like 'no one came" and ' the aviator " totaly diffrents and theyve dun so much you cant call them a type of genre just call what type there songs are
It doesn't matter what genre of music they are, if you like their music then you like their music regardless of what you want to call it. its irrelevant.
Jon, Ian Paice and Ritchie. That has been the synergy and momentum behind Deep Purple's distinctive sound and scope. Now that the band has disintegrated in orbit let us once again survey the flight pattern when it was space truckin....
I diddn't know that version. cool one! I’m 11 years old and did a cover of that song. If you wanna check it out…. Greetings from France !
