  • You are correct, Mr. VA2SG, it is not an auto-tuner. The only reason I used the other tuner (an Emtech ZM2) was that I wanted more mobility for the rig at the campsite- the use of the 3 ft jumper made it more moveable- I also preferred to let the external tuner have more exposure to the rain/mist than the PFR. Next summer: a vertical wire yagi for the portable ops... stay tuned.

  • You mention the PFR3 have an automatic tuner, Its a manual tuner but it works great. A bit touchy but you can find a match in most cases. Thanks for all your vids.

  • K7HP - great video, I'm jealous for oh-so-many-reasons: 1) I have an unassembled PFR3 I hope to work on this winter (and use to learn CW), 2) I missed field day this year, 3) I lived in the Seattle area for 14 years before moving to Utah, and 4) I love the Olympic coast--hiked down to Rialto Beach with scouts one year and really enjoyed it! 73's from K7JTO

  • I see the balanced feed coming off the tuner but what is the rest of the antenna?

  • @k7tp - No balanaced. feedline involved: those wires are a counterpoise and an inverted L longwire going up about 25 ft and over about 30. It is a similar antenna to the one in my 2009 video taken near the same location. I had wanted to try a 3 el 20 meter vertical yagi made of magnet wire suspended from cord, but didn't have it together in time. NEXT year... hi hi...

  • Really nice, John ! Now I want to do something like that myself. Doesn't have to be field day... Just nice weather would be fine.

Good seeing you on July 4th at Russ and Karen's too ! 73

  • @k7iq Good seeing you again as well Bob. The tarp and a small fire at that downwind corner keeps the operation warm and dry even if it is rainy and windy. 73!

  • Hi John,

That was an awesome video. You are lucky to live close to such a beautiful place to operate. I'm jealous :)

    Take care,

    Mike

  • @WE0H Thanks, Mike! It is not THAT close, being a four hour drive from the home QTH in Seattle... But it is WELL worth it. The Olympic National Seashore is my favorite part of the Planet. This part of the coast has no highway next to it. It is much as it was for the last X-thousands of years. (minus some plastic flotsam)

  • John, Enjoyed the video. Nice spot for QRP. Chuck AF4O

  • AWESOME Video and congrates on doing 'green' FD from the wilderness via solar pwr! ...very COOL ...wish we could have been there!! 73, Rooster & Peanut -wGOAT

  • @goathiker Thanks Steve! High Praise coming from you. One of my summer projects is to learn MS Moviemaker so I can edit clips like you do in your excellent vids; I would have added stuff like field antenna construction details. Right now, it is done all in one take.. I would love to go out with you and the goats one of these years...and have them carry the batteries.

  • @charangito I'm trying to do more single takes myself as it eliminates a lot of editing! Ha. But most single takes can get boring fast like watching a surveillance video of midnight at a 7-11. ;-) You did good at keeping it interesting and moving!! Yep if the goats make it to WA they'll be in for some heavy lifting sure thing!

    Cheers, Steve
