While this may actually occur in the next 4 years, I think people should really look into the Venus Project, now that will really blow your mind... All of this new technology, those new devices, they still won't be able to last that long, they'll keep on launching newer devices, just to give continuity to capitalism and contaminate the planet. I shouldn't want a better iPhone, you should hope for a clean world, and this, this is just going to delay everything...
making batteries breath air is a BAD idea. Make then use CO2 instead. We're trying to preserve the environment not kill it! Everyone please like and maybe the message will get across to IBM.
Hmm... between the utter displays of blind incredulity, juvenile comments about the holograms sexual arousal, and dogmatic socialist rants... I must say..
There are far too many moronic replies to this video. The technology is cool, its real, and its comming. It will arrive whether you imbeciles are ready or not.
With all of these idiots on nearly every youtube thread... I can take comfort in one fact; you idiots will be among the first to be replaced by semi-intelligent machines.
Yes, in a few years, batteries will provide more power, but if history has taught us anything, it is that the devices will find ways to use every drop of power, so battery life won't improve to any meaningful degree. As for powering phones on static electricity or kinetic energy without a battery, yes, you could use those things to charge a battery, but you still need a battery. (Okay, I suppose you could use a capacitor, but the device would be quite a lot larger.) *sigh*
All of these technologies can NOT be implemented in 5 years. Especially battery solution is a waste of time. Its impossible to charge with static electric or weather !

Has anyone else noticed that promised future technologies have been getting more lame and less ambitious as time passes? In the past it was curing smallpox or sending a man to the moon or developing planes that can fly people across the country at close to the speed of sound, and now we're settling for recapturing the heat from a server? WTF?
I thought they already monitored twitter for key words like "OMG EARTHQUAKE" or something. I remember reading about using twitter to locate an earthquake epicentre with a fair degree of accuracy from the time and location of relevant tweets. Like a wave in a pond.
An array of information via electronic devices for traffic patterns.. simply awesome and a great huge of our current technology. Nothing futuristic there, just bold and ingenious.

All Nice, Congratulations! BUT the invention of BATTERIES breathing OXYGEN would be a GLOBAL DISASTER. We are already struggling with global warming, increases in Carbon Dioxide levels and global deVegetation. What is rather needed is BATTERIES which breath CARBON DIOXIDE and give off OXYGEN. Some technoflora. Seriously, someone should communicate to the techno-geniuses at IBM to redirect their efforts else we could head for a global disaster with some of these energy devices.
What a load of Bs. And Who cares about ibm these days. They can`t even produce a descent looking animation. Seriously. You could ask any guy on the street and get a more realistic prediction then this.
I like the energy efficiency and hologram parts; but the gathering more info on your traffic and even walking patterns triggers the Dystopian Future alarm in my brain.
5 years? I think I’ll finish my Testatika device for converting atmospheric static electricity to usable low voltage and high current after 2 years! Anyone wants it? Watch my videos, it's all about it…
IBM talks about me, but they don’t know it yet! :)
Anyways, half of the stuff here I haven't even seen a working prototype of it, let alone a close-to.production version (like it should if its just 5 years down the road)
This video belongs in the 90's. Is this really IBMs plan for the next 5 years. Everything in this video already exists and could be implemented in a month.
5 years? Are you kidding me? Where the heck is the flying mini vans and skateboards? 3d Holograms are already out and thriving in Japan, who the heck wants to walk around with holograms, lame man lame. This video sucks IBM has really gone down the toilet.
Virtually all 3D projections used these days is by mirror and fog manipulation on large stages like Japan's own Vocaloid concerts. The battery life one is new as well, referring to concurrent research on virus lined circuitry and conductors making batteries much more efficient.
There is new hologram technology being researched in Uni of Arizona, it projects holographic 3D onto a surface like glass but appears as true 3D with dynamic perspective. Probably what's being referenced actually
@resoloser except the ones here aren't exactly abstract, bud. most of them are in the small stages of development today as a proven technology of development.

New tech always takes about 4 times as long to come out into the mainstream as predicted.
